5 year old birthday ideas on a budget!

MonstranceClock · 24/06/2019 10:48

Hi just asking from some quick ideas.
I'm a student parent and as it's the holidays I don't have a lot of spare money.
Daughter turns 5 in August and I'm a bit stuck on what to get her. She's had all the "Big stuff" now, eg, Bike, Scooter, Dolls house, Guitar...
My budget is probably around the £100 mark. I dont like to buy things like clothes or shoes as birthday presents, as those are things I provide anyway. She has too many books so no more of those!
Just wanting to know if anyone has had any surprising presents that didn't cost a bomb but were really loved by your kids.
Thankyou!

My 6yos favourite present this year was a sparkly pencil case and pens, with a 'grown up' colouring book.

Other ideas... Chapter books you can enjoy together, Lego, space hopper/pogo stick.

my2bundles · 24/06/2019 10:55

Water gun/water balloons
Play do
Tea set
Age appropriate board games
Mr potato head
It's often the smaller gifts that are more special.

MonstranceClock · 24/06/2019 10:58

Oh board games are a good idea, I would like to start playing more games with her. She's gotten so used to playing alone because I've been so busy studying. It would be nice to have things we can do together. Can you reccomend any?

I have 2 daughters and the things that have played with most are Playmobil sets. They have the playground and school sets.

My younger daughter is turning 6 and I'm getting her some Lego, a pink tangle teezer, a nice backpack, a board game & a box full of craft stuff from the Works.

WaltzForDebbie · 24/06/2019 10:59

My daughter's favourite games are sleeping queens & shopping list.

MonstranceClock · 24/06/2019 11:03

We have an entire chest full of lego Grin no more lego!
More craft stuff is good, she like to do this.

What about a teepee tent or hanging canopy? They are great for a range of imaginative play, as well as making dens and using as a cosy reading spot by adding some fun fairy lights and some pillows and blankets etc. I got one for my 3 year old with the hope it will last for years and she loves it, we have it our most days and it folds down tiny for storage. I have this one in grey www.amazon.co.uk/boppi%C2%AE-Outdoor-Portable-Childrens-Playhouse/dp/B0184TM65A/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?psc=1&s=gateway&keywords=teepee+tent+for+kids&sprefix=teepee+tent&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1561370599&sr=8-2-spons

I always wanted one of those for her, but we have small house and no garden Sad

Favourite games here include Junior Monopoly, Junior Cluedo, Junior Scotland Yard, most Orchard Games and Pass the Pigs.

MommaJules · 24/06/2019 11:18

My children love activity based gifts especially kinetic sand (which doesn’t have to be branded they are all good), also the polymer clays are good. Another big favourite in our house is the bath bomb making sets. Also there are some great art sets out there. Games can be good too Orchard Toys have loads of affordable games which are on amazon and not too dear. With a budget of £100 you could get a range of the above for your little one, good luck and I hope she has a great day 🥳

thethoughtfox · 24/06/2019 11:30

Connect 4 is great, cheap and doesn't take hours to play one game!

thethoughtfox · 24/06/2019 11:31

Tiny little figures or plastic animals are cheap and can be played with at home, in the bath or in the car.

my2bundles · 24/06/2019 11:32

At 5 my son loved candy land, the very hungry caterpillar game, bingo bears game, frustration and hungry hungry hippos

skankingpiglet · 24/06/2019 11:35

My daughter has just turned 5. We saved quite a bit by buying a number of her gifts second hand (in mint or near-mint condition). Excluding stuff you have said you already have, she got rollers skates (£10), Sylvanian Families (£5 & £10 sets), Shopkins (£5 for a big bundle). I tend to have a scroll through Facebook marketplace to find things, but I can also still find some suitable toys at nearly new sales too.
I also bought some Playmobil bits and a dress up outfit in the sale section of TKMaxx. They have some really good prices if you have one near you can pop in every so often between now and August.
Other items she was given that have been popular are Buckaroo, a (not top of the range!) radio controlled car, a sparkly bag, crafty bits, a Little Live Pet, and books.

Weevle84 · 24/06/2019 11:36

My 5 year old got the Barbie campervan for Christmas it is £75 in Smyths, think I got it cheaper on Amazon though. It is the most played with toy that ever came in to this house! I got some Barbie clothes and accessories for pence on Ali Express too and they went down well too.

LittleAndOften · 24/06/2019 11:41

This is a great game, I used to have it in my classroom and all ages loved it. You have to balance the penguins on a wobbly iceberg. Harder than you think!

Also recommend Frustration, Pop-up Pirate, Hungry Hippos, Kerplunk.

TokyoSushi · 24/06/2019 11:43

My DD is a similar age and absolutely loves Hama beads

LittleAndOften · 24/06/2019 11:44

Does she like dressing up? A costume might be fun. Also a proper baking set (ds has a silicone one) with pinny and hat is makes a nice gift.

A dolls house is another idea. I had a wooden one when I was little, I loved it so much.

LittleAndOften · 24/06/2019 11:47

Sorry just reread your OP forget I said dolls house!

Lyricallie · 24/06/2019 13:28

My wee sister got a chalk board at that age and loved it.

soloula · 24/06/2019 13:35

How about a pass(es) for a local attraction(s)? Give you something to do in the holidays without spending extra money?

DD1 who's 5 loves her camera and binoculars. Would she like something like that?

BangingOn · 24/06/2019 14:04

The Orchard games are always fab, DS is 5 and loves Pop to the Shops. He also loves Hungry Hippos but it’s so noisy!

Proseccoinamug · 24/06/2019 14:07

Orchard toys games are great for the age group.

Raid the charity shops for dressing up clothes and put them in a box for her? That was a hit when I did it!

Check the Facebook selling sites? You can get some lovely things that are nearly new.

MonstranceClock · 24/06/2019 17:27

Thankyou for suggestions. I dont like to do second hand for presents, but so far on my list I have : Operation, Guess Who, Junior Monopoly, magnet things that you can build stuff with?, Sylvanian families.
Will also be able to dish out ideas to family members.
I have seen that Lush are doing birthday parties, £25 per child. Includes making bathbombs and soap, they get a goodie bag with lush products and the birthday child actually gets an extra goodie bag wrapped in one of their eco wrap things. Seems very good value for money!
