To put my swim things through the washing machine? (Lighthearted)

We're currently having our kitchen and bathroom redone, so after swim class with DS we went to the PIL for a proper shower.
I asked MIL if I could run all the swimming stuff through her machine as it was a sunny day and I could get it out on the line and she was aghast.
She said that swim thing shouldn't be put through a machine as they lose elasticity.
Personally I'd just buy new stuff if that happened but our stuff has always been fine going in the machine and I really can't abide the thought of not properly washing them after the chlorine and skin cell soup.

I always put mine through the wash. Only need a quick one though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/06/2019 06:58

So what does she do? Hand wash,? Balls to that.

Babdoc · 24/06/2019 06:59

So does MIL never wash her knickers in case the elastic goes?!

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 24/06/2019 06:59

Put it through the machine. Low temp and low spin.

Winegumaddict · 24/06/2019 07:07

It's the chlorine which destroys the elastic I think so I always wash swim stuff or give it a good rinse on holiday etc.

orangeshoebox · 24/06/2019 07:10

that's what the 20 min short cycle is for!
but never use detergent, just water.

AnthonyCrowley · 24/06/2019 07:11

I always wash swimsuits and they seem fine. Normal length wash with other stuff but at 30.

eurochick · 24/06/2019 07:12

I always wash swimsuits in the machine. No issues.

megletthesecond · 24/06/2019 07:13

Yanbu.
Our swim kit always has a rinse in the machine.

Queenoftheashes · 24/06/2019 07:18

I wash mine in the shower - my mummy told me not to put in machine. I also have huge boobs so expensive underwired swimwear.

WishIwas19again · 24/06/2019 07:18

My mum always insisted we hand rinse our costumes and hang up to drip dry - I did until I had Dd when I thought I'd try them through the wash with the swim towels after weekly swimming lesson as drying was a pain in winter. Absolutely fine, wish I'd done it years ago!

KneelJustKneel · 24/06/2019 07:20

We swim a lot as a family so tend to rinse and drip to save the swimsuits a bit. And put through the machine occasionally.

I doubt at swimming/washing a couple of times a month it would matter? I dont know though!

Dippypippy1980 · 24/06/2019 07:24

I remember this from when I was a child. Swim suits were supposed to have a cold rinse.

But I always run them through a cold wash. Haven’t had any problems

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/06/2019 07:30

Ours just go in a general 40° 1hour wash. And then the tumble. Totally fine.

Singleandproud · 24/06/2019 07:31

When DD was little I just threw all our stuff in the wash, the cosies were cheap and it didn’t matter.

DDs cosies cost £40 + now I just hand rinse now after I accidentally put DDs expensive competition suit in the wash with the towels, it completely ruined it. Mind you she swims 5 times a week so it only just dries from being rinsed out before she’s in it again

BeanBag7 · 24/06/2019 07:35

I do a rinse and spin but dont wash with detergent

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 24/06/2019 07:36

It prolongs the life.
Like bras - you're supposed to hand wash them in cool water too 🤷🏻‍♀️

ThursdayLastWeek · 24/06/2019 07:38

I wash them after every third use or so - they go in with the sports kit without fabric conditioner.

Spam88 · 24/06/2019 07:43

Mine go in the washing machine. I was originally washing baby DD's stuff by hand because the instructions said they should just be rinsed in cold water. But then it occurred to me a 30 wash was cooler than the pool we were taking her swimming in 🤷‍♀️

Lweji · 24/06/2019 07:48

If we go to the beach every day, they get a cold wash with soap by hand because they're not enough to run a cycle.
At other times I wash them with delicates.

ZenNudist · 24/06/2019 07:50

I always stick swim things in the wash. No problem

Fibbke · 24/06/2019 07:53

The logos peel off eventually if you keep washing them in the machine and it isnt great for them. Occasionally is fine. I used to have a shower in my suit after swimming which rinses the chlorine off.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/06/2019 08:13

I put mine in the handwash programme. Doesn't seem to have affected them. Only this year have I had to replace a pair of bikini bottoms that were at least twenty five years old. I was at school when I bought them and I'm in my 40s now.

Granted I only generally wear them on holiday, but we go away at least three or four times a year and I've worn them in waterparks so it's not like they've not seen use. They were just wearing a bit thin but still had their shape.

TheFastandCurious · 24/06/2019 08:17

I always wash swim suits in the machine. Like you say OP, the chlorine, other people’s deodorant, skin cells (and worse) are on there.

Never notice any elasticity going prematurely as a result. I don’t do them over 40 degrees though.

imnotcheryl · 24/06/2019 09:05

I just put them in a wash bag. My cosi cost $250 so I'm a bit precious about it, but it's been fine.
