I almost fell over today to see someone spend over a tenner for a packet of fags. I gave years ago when they were about three pound a packet. How do people afford it??

OP posts:
ooohhhhcrap · 24/06/2019 17:31

Christ wat a load of judgey people we are on this thread Hmm

Not read all the posts because I got so far down reading the comments about people who smoke tend to be low earners or they prioritise it over their children etc.

What a crock of shit.

I smoke. I have a good job. We have holidays abroad and weekend trips every year
We have a lovely home
My children get whatever they need and don't walk around in awful cheap clothes or shoes.

How many of you that commented negatively drink?
I guarantee some of you sit there with your wine of an evening and convince yourselves that it's ok as it was paid for in the food shop, and that having a couple of glasses of wine a night with an evening meal is the norm Hmm

I don't have to prioritise because I work hard and provide everything my household needs and more.

If I choose to smoke it's nobody's business how I afford it.
Like it's nobody's business how people afford alcohol or shoes or expensive bags or anything else for that matter

happyhillock · 24/06/2019 17:43

I smoke and work full time, a pkt does me 2 day's, i don't pay silly prices to get my hair done, don't walk around with £70 on my feet or have a handbag that would cost as much as my council tax, i don't drive, very rarely go out to the pub, do go out a couple of times a month for a meal with DP, have friends over once a month for nibbles and a drink

Idontwanttotalk · 24/06/2019 17:50

Well OP, how did you afford it when you were smoking? What year did you give up and what is £3 per packet ike in terms of money today?

I gave up in 1981 when Embassy No1 were £1.03 and John Player Special hit £1 per pack.

I would say people prioritise their cigarettes before other expenditure so they probably cut down on food and household fuel.

Nope and nope.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 24/06/2019 18:08

I can't afford it really. I mean we don't go without but 3k a year is sickening.

To those vapers
I have tried before with different set ups but I can never quite get that ' dry hit'
Also I have the liquid burn my mouth.
I must have around 4 relatively expensive vapes sitting in the bottom of the wardrobe.

OverseasWorker · 24/06/2019 18:21

I work and they only cost 4 EUR a packet.

starzig · 24/06/2019 18:23

Ooohcrap. I am also a smoker that can afford it but the reason people are talking of going without and prioritising is that the majority of smokers are low income. Take for example our office. Only 2 out of 30 professional staff smoke. 4 of the 6 cleaners smoke (and the other 2 vape). We are in the minority so please don't take it personally.

Every 6 months i go somewhere cheap in eastern Europe. It was Lithuania a couple of weeks back. I have a nice little break and i bring back the full 3000 you're allowed. It's legal if you buy them in the shops there and pay the tax in that country. But in those countries there are 2.50 a pack as opposed to 9 here. So basically I saved a grand but the trip was only 150. That's how I afford it, by never buying them in the UK

Chanandlersbong · 24/06/2019 18:59

I bought a pack each for Dsis and BIL as part of their birthday presents the other week. Almost fell over when the cashier asked me for £20! Certainly an expensive habit these days.

notangelinajolie · 24/06/2019 19:23

Most people smoked when I was young and today I don't actually know anyone who smokes. I gave up because my new boyfriend (now DH) didn't smoke. It was in the late 80's/early nineties ish and cigarettes had just reached the princely sum of £2 a pack. I used to smoke 20 a day. I didn't earn much but could afford to smoke because the cost relative to my salary was low. Smoking used to be much more affordable for the average working person but in today's money there is no way I could afford £12 a day Shock Wow that's a lot of money!

SrSteveOskowski · 24/06/2019 19:58

I'm in Ireland. Average cost of cigarettes here is about €13. A 'friend' of mine passes bitchy comments because I drive (her words) 'a big posh car' and an 'always out for dinner'.
She smokes more than 20 a day, spending upwards of €100 a week. €5200 a year. On cigarettes. Let that sink it.

DH and I go out for dinner about once every 6 weeks. My car certainly doesn't cost anywhere near €5200 a year, yet she can't seem to see this.
Or chooses not to.

TheWashingMachine · 24/06/2019 20:05

I've never understood smoking and don't know anyone who smokes now, the men are all too busy prancing round in lycra, the women are doing pilates

mindproject · 24/06/2019 20:07

I quit 14 years ago. I'm so glad I did. Such a total waste of money.

Sweetdreamer93 · 24/06/2019 20:13

There’s plenty of people that prioritise alcohol.
FFS it’s always the smokers that get attacked.
I work hard and spend my money on what I want to!

Youwanapizzame · 24/06/2019 20:17

Reminds me of this .... so where's your Ferari/plane/mansion joke

Treefloof · 24/06/2019 20:20

4 of the 6 cleaners smoke
Are you implying cleaners must be poor?

mindproject · 24/06/2019 20:27

Some cleaners get paid really well, that's how they can afford it.

starzig · 24/06/2019 20:44

Well I didnt think employees of a contract cleaning company would be on a high wage. Apologies if I'm wrong.

ooohhhhcrap · 24/06/2019 20:50

I have a lot of wealthy clients that smoke and a lot of not so wealthy ones that don't !

It's the awful nit picky stereotypical shot that annoys me.

Some people view smoking as a waste of money because it's not their own hobby but others consider £50 a month gym memberships a waste when you can excercise for free!!

Horses for courses as they say

ooohhhhcrap · 24/06/2019 20:51

Meant to say habit not hobby Hmm

x2boys · 24/06/2019 21:10

Those cleaners may also be getting cheap cigs from a local shop that sells them under the counter?.My local shop.certainly does !

ooohhhhcrap · 24/06/2019 21:20

Quite a rude comment to assume cleaners are lower paid so therefore smoke!!!

The cleaners I know in my area earn very very well because some people choose to prioritise paying someone to do their cleaning instead of doing it themselves so will pay what the going rate is Smile

MrsAJ27 · 24/06/2019 21:22

I decided to stop when they announced they would no longer be selling in packs of 10!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/06/2019 21:24

I asked a smoker I knew the exact same question. She simply said "you just do"

Which summed it up. You just do.
