I almost fell over today to see someone spend over a tenner for a packet of fags. I gave years ago when they were about three pound a packet. How do people afford it??

@MeSoTooSo I feel similarly about people who drive cars on roads next to paths. Can you believe lots of them pump harmful toxins into the air that we all have to breathe in? Disgustingly selfish, really.

Allhailthesun · 23/06/2019 21:03

I guess in the same way people buy food from Waitrose that adds at least 50% to the food bill.
Or as a low carber I buy mixed nuts from Lidl at £2 a bag that lasts 3 days. That’s the same price as roll ups.

MeSoTooSo · 23/06/2019 21:05

@Nikhedonia

Choosing to buy and purposefully inhale known toxins is exactly the same as driving to work to pay the rent.

Great point, that. Well done. Hmm

wonderingsoul · 23/06/2019 21:06

I spend 13 a week. 30g of Jackie 9.80. Box of filter tips and some papers.

That's almost 2 or 3 drinks in a pub. Less then a take away.

I go out once a month. I work. And whilst we are not well off I feel ok about spending 13 on my self a week.

Nikhedonia · 23/06/2019 21:06

@MeSoTooSo Thank you 🙂

wonderingsoul · 23/06/2019 21:07

Backie... not Jackie...

I'm not in the habit of smoking 50 year old woman

squeekywheel · 23/06/2019 21:18

@MeSoTooSo

"It really is idiotic, paying to indulge in something that is known to cause you harm and harm those around you."

It's pleasurable, very pleasurable. That's why people do it.

I quit years ago.

Hithere12 · 23/06/2019 21:22

😱 Why are they so expensive now?! Is it taxes??

MeSoTooSo · 23/06/2019 21:23

I quit years ago.

So did I.

It's not pleasurable, it's an addiction. It gives the impression of satisfaction while causing actual harm and simultaneously the stress of the next 'fix'.

I don't want someone else's smoke in my lungs. I don't want to see fag butts flicked onto the floor.

BillThePony · 23/06/2019 21:25

Mine always come from abroad. I travel a lot as does dh so he will pick me some up (he isn't a smoker)

I guess I get through 2-3 packs a week which is around 40-50. Doesn't really impact my finances at all.

I know it's not healthy and I know I need to stop. But that's another thread

squeekywheel · 23/06/2019 21:26

An addiction can be pleasurable.

Anyway, I bloody loved smoking. I quit for my family.

Treefloof · 23/06/2019 21:26

Oh dear, its £3 a pack on the black market maybe £3.50 if the usual supplier is having problems.
I have bought around 4 full price packs in the last decade. Most of the cost now of full price is tax at nearly £7 per pack.
Some of my cheapie are fakes (snide) but If I cant smoke them i ask for different ones. No problems.

stanski · 23/06/2019 21:31

Get them from friends who are flight attendants. Depends on the airline costs between 4-5£ a pack. Rarely buy from shop.

PookieDo · 23/06/2019 21:34

I stopped when they were about £7 I just could not afford it anymore and had an epiphany about my health but I do vape ever since. Really struggle to knock that on the head but it’s way cheaper
I was always so bad at rolling my own even with a machine and filters I was just terrible at it

fiveanddime · 23/06/2019 21:37

When I was growing up most of the adults I knew smoked and they smoked loads. My parents would have got through 15-20 packs a week and that seemed normal amongst their peer group at the time. The few smokers I know now would barley get through that in a year. There just isn’t time now you can’t smoke at work or on the bus or indoors pretty much anywhere. Cigarettes are a lot more expensive but I bet the average smoker doesn’t spend that much more on them

Far2go46 · 23/06/2019 21:39

Get it cheep off matey

Far2go46 · 23/06/2019 21:41

Worst drug ever

Hithere12 · 23/06/2019 21:42

Could you not order fags from Spain in bulk to save money? Is this legal?

Far2go46 · 23/06/2019 21:43

Hithere12

No

Gingerkittykat · 23/06/2019 21:58

I smoke roll ups, no way I could afford normal fags now. Most people I know have either swapped, given up or vaped.

Nope, importing in bulk would not be legal since you would need to pay UK taxes. You can bring some in yourself for personal use from the EU but not import them.

Hithere12 · 23/06/2019 22:16

Oh I see. I remember every time we went on holiday as kids our Dad would buy 10+ bulk packs and we’d have to put them in our cases lol.

Accountant222 · 23/06/2019 22:22

I never give the cost of cigarettes a thought, I just buy them I can afford them, get them on holiday for half price and friends who business travel get me duty free.

GrandTheftWalrus · 23/06/2019 22:25

Both me and DP smoke but we only buy 1 pack a day at 8.70. Occasionally we buy 2 in one day but that's if we are both working etc.

We bought 2 yesterday because he was working. He went out tonight and bought a pack and I kept the ones that were left over.

Its expensive yes and I would prefer the money to go on something else however I dont want to quit just yet.

MelonSlice · 23/06/2019 22:28

Brexit will put a stop to that.
