To ask if have or use your landline?

I have just come to the realisation that we hardly ever use our landline or receive calls on it. Everything is done via mobiles now. Are landlines going to be a thing of the past? Do you use yours much?

My phone signal is crap where I live even though I'm supposed to get WiFi calls I loose signal every 2 minutes (I wish that was exaggerating) most people call my mobile get frustrated after 5 call backs then call my house phone so we use it alot. Tbh I'm not sure why they insist on calling my mobile first when they know what will happen.

CherryPavlova · 23/06/2019 20:01

Four landlines and used frequently.

Jellykat · 23/06/2019 20:04

I have a landline for my broadband, no fibre optic here, plus its cheaper for me to use a landline to ring landlines, and my mobile to ring mobiles..

LadyRannaldini · 23/06/2019 20:06

Here in Norfolk we couldn't manage without it, the mobile coverage is poor and I'm not standing at the bottom of the garden in winter!

ForalltheSaints · 23/06/2019 20:06

Yes for family and some trades people. I don't want to be disturbed when out unless a real emergency.

Time40 · 23/06/2019 20:06

99% of my calls are via landline while my cheapo PAYG mobile is mostly uncharged in the bottom of my bag

Same here. And I agree with the pp who said that mobiles are a faff.

What I hate - really, really, really hate - is the way that as soon as you give someone your mobile number, they insist on calling you on that every time. I try very hard to avoid giving people the mobile number.

mrsfeatherbottom · 23/06/2019 20:13

Yes and yes, most days. We're in NI and ILs are in Dublin. Landline to landline counts as a national call so included in my plan. Involve a mobile and suddenly it's international and costs a fortune. Go figure.

(FIL rings us every day for a chat)

LittleGinBigGin · 23/06/2019 20:20

We have a landline number but no phone, we never replaced it after dc2 threw it in the fishtank 🤷‍♀️

To be fair without looking at my phone I couldn’t even tell you the number!

luckylavender · 23/06/2019 20:21

Still have one & still use it

bumblingbovine49 · 23/06/2019 20:22

Yes. I rarely carry my mobile phone around with me at home and often leave it charging upstairs and so.often don't hear it ringing when at home.
Most of my friends and family know to call the landline if they want to.be sure I will answer at home

I probably hear/ answer my mobile less than 50%of the time at home, the landline is 95%.as it is loud and there is one both upstairs and downstairs so no having to run around looking for it when I hear it ringing. I am very very good at putting it back on the cradle after a call though

Laiste · 23/06/2019 20:30

My mum lives with us. She uses it, we all (4 other adults) use our mobiles. It never rings for us, and therefore we never answer it. It will only ever be for her, she carries a handset with her all the time, and if she's out there's no point answering it just to tell someone that!

The bloody thing still manages to drive me up the wall despite all the above. I'd say 6 out of every 10 incoming calls are cold calls. I hear her answering and hanging up. She's on the opt-out list ect, but still they go on. And still she (genuinely) wonders why we don't bother with a land line!! Hmm

hinely · 23/06/2019 20:31

I've had it unplugged for many years. It's annoying to have to pay for it just to get broadband. There's no technical reason for it - you're not forced to have a landline in various other countries overseas.

I know you can switch to Virgin and so on to get rid of it, but I don't want them.

delilahbucket · 23/06/2019 20:32

The actual phone broke several years ago and has never been replaced. Utterly pointless and yet companies still insist we pay for line rental for something no one uses.

Scrowy · 23/06/2019 20:37

Yes and we use it all the time.

We have no mobile phone signal so we use Wifi-calling on our mobiles if someone rings us on them but it's pretty patchy and prone to cutting out.

Poor broadband and poor mobile phone signal tend to go hand in hand in rural areas so I hope if in the future the plan is to switch to 100% VoIP that they sort the ruddy broadband out so people in rural areas aren't further disadvantaged or cut off completely.

I use VoIP in one of my jobs and it's utter shit.

LakieLady · 23/06/2019 20:38

We have a landline for the internet. Mobile signal is very iffy here. My phone only works if I'm at the front of the house.

There are only 2 people who ring us on it, DP's DM, who's 80 and doesn't do mobiles, and my 91 year old aunt. DB has the number, but he texts.

Orangeballon · 23/06/2019 20:38

Yes, I phone my sister and talk for hours for free.

vampirethriller · 23/06/2019 20:40

Yes, I use it every day

Chouetted · 23/06/2019 20:41

I keep mine purely in case I have to dial 999 in a hurry. It's by the front door and has a nice long cord, so even if the house is on fire, I should still be able to ring the fire brigade. Provided the telephone isn't on fire.

RosaWaiting · 23/06/2019 20:42

I only have it for the broadband and in case of some kind of emergency if the mobile networks go down

I don't keep the phone plugged in. My mum was a bit horrified initially but she was the only person who ever called on it and I didn't like it ringing when it's just a sales call or whatever.

so I can plug it back in if I need it, but it hasn't been used for at least 5 years I reckon.

londonrach · 23/06/2019 20:43

Yes use it all the time. So does my sister, mother mother in law. In fact i dont know anyone who doesnt

londonrach · 23/06/2019 20:45

Those that use mobiles instead of landline..doesnt your ear get hot and do you worry about brain tumours. I seen someone die of a brain tumour.

beyoncessweatband · 23/06/2019 20:48

We've not had a landline for close to 8 years

LarryGreysonsDoor · 23/06/2019 20:49

No London.
I don’t make phone calls that often anyway.

MondeoFan · 23/06/2019 20:51

I have a landline and a phone plugged into it but no one ever answers it and when it rings I feel scared to answer it. Mainly scam calls I fear

SadOtter · 23/06/2019 20:53

I haven't had a landline since moving out of my mums 15 years ago. It has never been an issue. The only calls I ever get/make are between me and DH during the day, when neither of us are in the house anyway, other than that it is just people trying to sell stuff - otherwise its email/text/facebook/whatsapp, or occasionally letters from my parents and siblings (we post each other silly little presents)
