To ask for your top tips for Sunday London Trip - Petticoat Lane? Ramsay restaurant? Churchill's War Rooms?

Hi all,
Looking at taking my dad who is over for a visit, plus my DH and teenage DCs , to London on Sunday.

Thought Brick/Petticoat Lane markets might be fun, and maybe Churchill's War Rooms in the afternoon- anyone experienced either/any top tips?

Also trying to find a restaurant ideally in between- DDad is rather unadventurous with food so probably needs to be a grill type place - wondered about Gordon Ramsay Maze Grill but wasn't sure if they only do the Sunday Roast menu on Sunday?

All advice gratefully received! Thanks

The War Rooms are fantastic and should please everyone.

I wouldn’t bother with Petticoat Lane market, nothing special at all - head for Columbia Rd flower market, much nicer.

Don’t know about Maze Sunday lunch but it isn’t a particularly convenient stop in between East London and
Whitehall...

sleepwhenidie · 20/06/2019 23:35

Maybe check out Portrait at the National Portrait Gallery for lunch?

Pumpkintopf · 20/06/2019 23:37

Thanks v much sleepwhenidie, my geography and ability to tell whether things are conveniently located is rubbish despite help from google maps! Will have a look at portrait and the flower market, thanks!

Agree with Colombia Road, its fab and there's loads of cafes and restaurants around the market. You can also walk to Spitalfields market - bit posher with more restaurants. Try Denis Severs House for a visit as it's in the area and open on Sundays, book ahead though.

Pumpkintopf · 20/06/2019 23:53

Dennis Severs house looks fascinating and I had no idea it existed. This is why I love mumsnet. Thanks.

I would do the War Rooms then head to the Southbank for street food and drinks. I like Hays Galleria but it might be a bit dull for teens.

Pumpkintopf · 21/06/2019 00:00

Hays Galleria looks interesting. We love street food but Dad does not!

Boat trip from Greenwich to London Westminster is a good experience.

Ricekrispie22 · 21/06/2019 06:58

Cellarium Cafe and Terrace has a fairly traditional menu - things like quiche and fish pie. We also like Wesley’s Cafe www.c-h-w.com/whats-on/public-cafe/ which serves hot food at lunch. The menu isn’t massive but there’s always something for everyone, from cottage pie to burgers and chips.

Lunaballoon · 21/06/2019 06:59

Definitely no to Petticoat Ln. Colombia road is more interesting if he’s into plants/gardening but be warned it’s very popular. It will be heaving!

A trip on the Thames down to Greenwich is a good idea and maybe a gallery. Check out what exhibitions are on that he might like. Some of the smaller galleries are worth a visit. The Courtauld gallery and John Soane are both lovely.

If you download the Citymapper app you can see the alternative ways to get from one location to another and how long it will take (you can put names of attractions/restaurants, doesn’t have to be address), that will help with planning. It’s fantastic.

SisterMaryLoquacious · 21/06/2019 07:04

War rooms was a huge hit with my DPILs and tween DCs.

SisterMaryLoquacious · 21/06/2019 07:05

And yes, CityMapper

Check out the Hawksmoor for Sunday lunch. You will need to book.

RickAstleyGaveMeUp · 21/06/2019 07:17

Another saying Churchill War Rooms are brilliant.

Have a look at Hix Soho for lunch

DappledThings · 21/06/2019 07:20

War Roons are good but definitely book in advance.

Ijumpedtheshark · 21/06/2019 07:22

I second Hawksmoor, their roast beef is amazing! We also found the cabinet war rooms very interesting.

Pumpkintopf · 21/06/2019 07:39

Fab, some great tips , I will check these out and citymapper sounds just what I need!

Cabinet war rooms are fab!

If you’re going to the Southbank anyway, there are some lovely foodie places round Borough Market and it is a lovely walk to go to London Bridge and then walk up the river.

I must admit to being slight obsessed with the lobster roll at Burger and Lobster (there are several branches centrally) and the burger there is very good as well so that’s probably where I’d eat. I’m going to be craving one of those all day now!

Becles · 21/06/2019 07:54

British museum has a fantastic restaurant

another20 · 21/06/2019 09:59

The Cafe in St James Park is great - proper meals - lovely outdoor terrace overlooking the lake - right opposite the cabinet war rooms - you are also not too far from The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition which is great if he likes art - and there are loads of restaurants nearby in Mayfair which are lovely and not too expensive.

murasaki · 21/06/2019 10:00

War rooms definitely excellent.

another20 · 21/06/2019 10:11

Colombia road opens early and closes early - so would do that first as stalls start packing up 2ish.

Pumpkintopf · 21/06/2019 17:11

Thanks, that cafe does look ideally located!
