Man-handling climate change protestors

Leafyhouse · 20/06/2019 23:17

Anyone else watch with horror as a climate change protestor was forcefully removed by Mark Field from the Mansion House speech? I mean, I'm no fan of political activism, 'direct action' and so on, but she wasn't presenting him with any direct threat, just shouting and being annoying. AIBU to think that his behaviour was totally unacceptable there?

And the only 'accosting' going on was from the MP

Helendee · 21/06/2019 15:25

Oh she’s definitely the former maud.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 21/06/2019 15:28

I can see why they might be a bit nervy, but he came across very aggressively. I'd rather our Government was full of kind, gentle and intelligent men than thick brutes but there you are.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 21/06/2019 15:29

Why, because she feels strongly about climate change? Strongly enough to be a member of Greenpeace and a protestor?

That makes her 'a nutter', does it?

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/06/2019 15:31

Racism, sexism and aggression are so fucking hilarious, after all.

Hi there Maud,

None of them is helped by trying to hijack some trivial piece of nonsense and draw tenuous connections though. In doing so you undermine all three, and make their objectives look ridiculous.

Twyler · 21/06/2019 15:31

"And no-one has mentioned strangulation" - not directly but the accusation of throat grabbing was been used frequently.

"And Fields wouldn't have done it if it was a bloke." - evidence for that statement? I can't say whether that is the case or not.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 21/06/2019 15:41

I don't think discussing overtly, unnecessarily, aggressive behaviour from a man towards a peaceful female protester is a trivial piece of nonsense.

But you clearly do, so hey ho.

Helendee · 21/06/2019 15:43

I wonder how many people would care had the demonstrator been a white male?

PinkieTuscadero · 21/06/2019 15:45

And again I say, white males have done this before at Tory events and received far cuddlier treatment.

Twyler · 21/06/2019 15:48

"I don't think discussing overtly, unnecessarily, aggressive behaviour from a man towards a peaceful female protester is a trivial piece of nonsense."

If that's addressed to me, as I have said before in my opinion under the circumstances the force used was not excessive, he did not know in the split second he had to assess the situation that she was simply a peaceful protester. The topic is most certainly not a trivial peice of nonsense.

TitianaTitsling · 21/06/2019 15:51

This- from pages ago.
It's easy to sit afterwards and say he should have done X, y or z. We weren't there and we weren't in the moment. In that situation you're not thinking 'shes a woman" 'id best be as gentle as possible and hope she leaves,' or 'ill sit and listen to her shouting and things will calm down.' you're probably thinking 'where the fuck are security?' , remembering recent attacks and acting from a place of instinct and fear

thethethethethe · 21/06/2019 15:51

I think we all know he wouldn't have treated a burly young male protester that way. Bullies love picking on those weaker than them.

Twyler · 21/06/2019 15:52

"And again I say, white males have done this before at Tory events and received far cuddlier treatment."

If you mean that self publicising dick head who tried to give Theresa May a 'P45' that too was a failure of security and he should have received similar treatment.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/06/2019 15:54

The remark was for me I think Twyler, it would really help if Mumsnet sorted out threading properly before introducing polls. To be clear, violence against women is most certainly not a trivial piece of nonsense. This incident in my opinion certainly was, and I cannot believe the extent it has been blown up.

It certainly has resulted in a lot of publicity for the protest, and good luck to them. It has also been a PR disaster for Mark Doodah, and I am not shedding any tears for that - he is odious!

PinkieTuscadero · 21/06/2019 15:57

And the big angry bloke who invaded the stage at Esther McVey's leadership launch to rant and rave. He was escorted out politely. No neck grabbing.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/06/2019 15:58

I work in a large supermarket and if our security removed a shoplifter in that manner they would be disciplined.

Buster72 · 21/06/2019 16:15

Lee Nelson was physically escorted from the room.
He was not part of a group of protesters already asked to leave.

Before Mr field places a hand on her neck she turned around and had a second go at getting past him....that escalation of force is down to the protestor....

Buster72 · 21/06/2019 16:17

@sweeneytoddsrazor

Shoplifters are usually off on their toes when they are told they won't be nicked Grin

PinguDance · 21/06/2019 16:21

I’ve just watched a clear video and am really shocked by his behaviour, she’s doesn’t look like she’s “going for” any one at all, she’s clutching some papers across her chest and holding a phone - if I can see that from the clip he’d be able to see that as she’s walking towards him, he can’t seriously have thought she was armed. What a dickhead.

TheHopefulTraveller · 21/06/2019 16:28

I think he was quite brave actually and acted in the moment to get rid of someone who shouldn't have been there. You can see in the video she pushes back on him so he had to use more force than he had anticipated to remove her.

He didn't assault her, he used neccessary force to remove her. She was pushig back at him and laughing smugly because she got exactly what she wanted from the situation.

I think there must be two different pieces of footage in circulation. Hmm

PinkieTuscadero · 21/06/2019 16:30

Lee Nelson was physically escorted from the room.

Yes he was.

Escorted in an appropriate manner.

No I did not like his behaviour one bit and he needs to apologise to her.

If a stranger walked behind me and I had no idea if they had a knife or acid or a bag of rotten eggs to throw at me I would of done the same🤷🏻‍♀️ and if it had been a tall female athlete doing it to a short lightweight male most people would have laughed.
