To ask about reusable baby wipes?

Jinglejanglefish · 20/06/2019 20:46

Due to all the stuff on TV about baby wipes I've have been looking in to ordering some reusable baby wipes. I think I am missing something though, as nearly all of them say they're not recommended for cleaning poo. If they don't say they outright then the language skims over the subject.

I've seen several MN posts about reusable baby wipes so does anyone have recommendations? I'm pretty frugal with my baby wipe usage, I only really use them for nappy changing, so if reusable ones can't be used for that there seems little point in me changing.

Thanks!

Cheeky Wipes definitely don't say you can't use them with poos!

Wifeofapostie · 20/06/2019 20:49

They are fine for cleaning poo. We use Cheeky Wipes. Coloured wipes for hands/faces. They go in the wash with clothes. White for pop/nappy changes, they go in the nappy bucket to be washed separately.

Jinglejanglefish · 20/06/2019 20:50

Ok thanks! Cheeky wipes seemed like the most expensive option but I'll look in to them. Are they all just actually microfibre cloths?

Cheeky wipes! I use coloured bamboo ones for nappies, they clean poo up really well. I'm getting a second kit for downstairs to clean hands/face now we're weaning DC.

hellotoyellow · 20/06/2019 20:53

Cheeky wipes talk a lot about poo. And they are brilliant.

PhillipeFellope · 20/06/2019 20:54

Cheeky wipes are great. They're like little terry cloth flannels (I don't like the microfibre ones) they've been going 2.5 years here.

I also bought some large cheap flannels and cut them into fours. Two big, clip top tupperware containers and a bit of lavender oil, and that's what I used at my DMs house rather than buying a second set of cheeky wipes.

SmellMySmellbow · 20/06/2019 20:54

Can I ask how you wash pooey wipes?

CollyWobbleNightmares · 20/06/2019 20:55

Not recommended for cleaning poo?! They are the BEST for cleaning poo! I have half Cheeky Wipes and half Etsy WAHM wipes and tbh my Etsy wipes are much more heard wearing and are much softer but they both work really well. At home I keep them dry in a basket and just wet as and when required. Out and about I take slightly damp ones in a small wet bag but sometimes re-wet in a sink or with my water bottle if they need to do a particularly messy job. I use bamboo for DS’ bum and microfibre for his hands and face. I don’t love the microfibre wipes (and have since learned that it isn’t the best environmentally) and on reflection would probably just use flannels for hands and face because I prefer the bigger size.

We’re considering using reusable wipes at home as a family (would previously have loo rolls for guests, illness etc.) as we get on so we’ll with them.

EdtheBear · 20/06/2019 20:55

Cheeky wipes here, I use the cotton ones for bum that get washed with nappies and bamboo for hands and face.

They work so much better than disposable.

Whisky2014 · 20/06/2019 20:56

Don't see why you can't use any cloth and just wash it..
It's basically the same as a facecloth that you wash over and over

bettycat81 · 20/06/2019 20:57

Most pound shops do little packs of flannels/cloths in their baby aisle. You get around 6-8 in a pack and I found them the perfect size when I was at that stage with my DS.

CollyWobbleNightmares · 20/06/2019 20:57

@SmellMySmellbow

Throw them in the nappy/baby wash for a cold rinse and then a 40 degree cotton wash with non bio in our house.

Teachermaths · 20/06/2019 20:57

The microfibre ones aren't great as they can release the fibres into the water sysyem.

But the Terry ones are brilliant. They are essentially small flannels and wipe off poo a treat.

Wash them at 60 with some anti bac stuff if you're really fussy. I put mine in with my nappies at 60 but no anti bac as it's not good for the nappies.

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/06/2019 20:58

There are loads of wahm on Facebook and etsy who sell wipes for a fraction of the price of brands like cheeky wipes. I don't use them for bums, but for hands and faces of babies/small children And they are great.

JammieCodger · 20/06/2019 20:58

You can get 10 washcloths from ikea for half the price. If they’re too big just cut them in quarters. They’re for wiping bums, there’s no need for anything fancy.

Jinglejanglefish · 20/06/2019 20:59

Here's a screenshot from Amazon cheeky wipes saying no recommended for poo.

Maybe I'll go directly to the cheeky wipes website then.

So I would need a pack of wipes, a wet bag for out and about and a wash bag. Is that all?

I've got some little lamb ones and some close ones. Both sets used for poo for 2 1/2 years. Both sets are bamboo and lasting really well.

What type do you have?

CollyWobbleNightmares · 20/06/2019 21:02

Are they the microfibre wipes you are looking at? Microfibre isn’t recommended for bums in cloth nappy circles as it can be quite drying for the skin and can (very rarely) cause skin irritation. That might be why they say not for poo?

lookingatthings · 20/06/2019 21:02

Cheeky wipes! Use them for myself and for dc. Chuck them in with the nappy wash- I use muslin / Terry squares, and a waterproof cover, and we're good to go.

That being said if you have the time/skills just cut down and hem some regular flannels cos that's all they are.

Toodleoopuddle · 20/06/2019 21:02

@Jinglejanglefish it's the microfibre ones which are not good for poo.

The cotton and bamboo ones are brilliant.

As an aside I cut up a cheap fleece ikea blanket and used them as baby wipes with my first and although they were ok they didn't really get baby's bum super clean as they were microfibre.

Jinglejanglefish · 20/06/2019 21:04

Ok I'm looking at bamboo ones! Thanks for all your help. DD is only a once a day pooper so we won't need loads. I tend to wet a muslin to clean her face and hands after food.

fernandoanddenise · 20/06/2019 21:04

Cheeky Wipes are excellent! Massively recommend them

Weathergirl1 · 20/06/2019 21:05

According to the Cheeky Wipes website (I was browsing the other day) microfibre is bad for poo because it's designed to attract particles - so presumably that means they're harder to clean.

polexiaaphrodesia · 20/06/2019 21:06

Baba and boo Bamboo wipes are fab! They do a far better job of cleaning up poo than normal wipes.

Purpleartichoke · 20/06/2019 21:06

You can use just about any soft absorbent cloth as a baby wipe. I made mine with flannel on one side and a cotton knit on the other. In the first few days, I kept hot water in a travel mug for wetting the wipes. As she got older that just became water and once poops became less frequent and more obvious, I just ran some wipes under the two.
