To ask about reusable baby wipes?

Jinglejanglefish · 20/06/2019 20:46

Due to all the stuff on TV about baby wipes I've have been looking in to ordering some reusable baby wipes. I think I am missing something though, as nearly all of them say they're not recommended for cleaning poo. If they don't say they outright then the language skims over the subject.

I've seen several MN posts about reusable baby wipes so does anyone have recommendations? I'm pretty frugal with my baby wipe usage, I only really use them for nappy changing, so if reusable ones can't be used for that there seems little point in me changing.

Thanks!

A cut up old t-shirt will do the same job.

Also, in the olden days when we used terry towelling nappies you had to fold yourself, we cleaned most of the poo off with loo roll and flushed it. I recently put this to a younger friend who was giving reusables a go, and she stared open mouthed then declared me a genius.

Another vote for cheeky wipes here - I use the pure cotton ones. Their customer service is very good too.

InterchangeableEmma · 20/06/2019 21:11

I used them for my DC - they weren't much of a thing at that time so I got stacks of cheap cotton face cloths. Just white ones for the ease of washing them with the nappies. Colours would have been cheerier but I worried they'd run. They were great. So much more effective than wipes too.

I used to make up a tub full in the morning with a vv weak baby wash and water mix.

Microfibre isn't great TBH - the microfibres escape into water and all that

If I was doing it again, I’d probably just get a yard of a nice thick knit fabric and cut it up. Knit doesn’t fray so really you don’t even need to hem it.

Newyearnewunicorn · 20/06/2019 21:16

As pp cut up old t shirts. I cut 4 thick men’s t shirts up after I’d watched that program. Cut into 4 inch squares I use them for poo only after wiping with loo roll. Wash under tap and reuse until child is clean then bin.
I use flannels for wee in the odd occasion I’ve used one for poo it’s been difficult to wash the poo out.

Right I've ordered a set of bamboo wipes, a wet bag for out and a mesh wash bag from cheeky wipes. Looking forward to trying them out!

I’m confused- people saying they use these for hands and faces. Is that not just a facecloth? Confused that’s what I use mine for!

Teachermaths · 20/06/2019 21:25

I use them for hands and faces throughout the day with a toddler, in place of baby wipes.

i used to make my own then put them in the wash with the reusable nappies

youtube it there is plenty on there

BearFoxBear · 20/06/2019 21:30

I used the ikea facecloths cut in half. Put them. In a click lock box with a cup of cooled camomile tea with a few drops of lavender oil in it. Perfect for everything!

Cheap flannels are the way to go. When ds was at the age to need wiping on any surface I used to dampen them and stick a few in a ziplock bag for out and about

Beesandcheese · 20/06/2019 21:32

They're just fancy flannels. Just give it a go. Most things are easy enough to do without the convenient version.

profpoopsnagle · 20/06/2019 21:35

15 years ago, I used smaller wipes for nappy changes- these were terry towelling type cloths about 10cm by 20 cm kept in a tupperware style box kept damp. Bought from the Nappy Lady at £2 for 20.

I used 10p normal sized flannels for hands and faces. Kept dry and run under the tap when needed. Had about 8.

Both of them worked much better than any wet wipe. I often only needed 1 wipe for the bum as the terry towelling lifted and removed the poo, whereas I found that when I used disposable wet wipes, I often needed three.... (but that helps them make a bigger profit if you use more....)

I am so glad to see that finally, people are waking up to the fact that disposable wet wipes are crap in every way.

Troels · 20/06/2019 22:04

I used a massive pack of white cotton flannels I got cheap. I used an old wipes box, and folded a lot of dry ones then put babywash and water over them and closed the lid. Just as convenient as wet wipes. For the nappy bag I had a wet bag with two waterproof sections, I put clean in one side, and dirty in the other. My friend carried a squirt bottle of baby wash and water mix and a bag of dry wipes in her nappy bag.
Don't use microfibre, they rip up the soft baby skin.
I used to throw them in the washing machine on hot.

Washable wipes are great for poo!
My daughter is 7 and we still use them for washing and they are just starting to show wear and tear!

Byebyefriend · 20/06/2019 22:19

Try the nappy lady wipes they're better than cheeky

seasidelife · 20/06/2019 22:26

Cheeky wipes, £1 shop ones and made loads cutting up a cheap towel. I use them for so many things now.
