As it says. Prompted by the other thread about child maintenance but different topic.
Wouldn’t it be a great idea to confiscate the driving licenses of abusive men.
In the first instance.
Alongside everything else.
We all know most face no consequences.
Wouldn’t it be good to make them a little less powerful?
Anyway. Who wants abusive men on the road .
We know the frequently drive aggressively too.
So it makes sense.
AIBU?

YABU, women domestically abuse men too.

Rashatash · 19/06/2019 22:50

Less frequently .

So done would lose their jobs and that fuels anger and aggression which they'd direct towards their OH who they'd place the blame on?

rededucator · 19/06/2019 22:51

And this threat would discourage victims from reporting abuse for fear of loss of OH income and getting the blame?

PurpleDaisies · 19/06/2019 22:52

I can’t see how this would make any difference to levels of domestic abuse

TrixieFranklin · 19/06/2019 22:53

And abusive women?

Rashatash · 19/06/2019 22:54

Abusive people, yes.

OP posts:
Ifyouknowyouknow · 19/06/2019 22:55

If you read into it you’ll see Rashatash that it is suspected the numbers of woman to men domestic violence is actually much higher than reported.

Geminijes · 19/06/2019 22:55

I think it would just encourage them to drive without a licence.

QuestionableMouse · 19/06/2019 22:56

I think it would only make things worse.

Abuser is reported and licence is taken. They go home and beat the crap out of their partner.

Rashatash · 19/06/2019 22:57

Ok so perhaps.
Abusers convicted of violent crimes should lose their license?
Would it be a deterrent?

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 19/06/2019 22:57

Honestly I think most of them would just drive anyway.

Rashatash · 19/06/2019 22:58

Hmmm.
Ok so we have established maybe it isn’t a good idea.

OP posts:
Rashatash · 19/06/2019 22:58

I wish it could be instigated properly though

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 19/06/2019 22:59

Why domestic abusers? Why not extend it to all violent offenders and sex offenders?

Unrealistic to say the least.

Rashatash · 19/06/2019 23:00

Ifyouknowyouknow how on earth could I read into it if nobody knows ?
I don’t believe it’s true. Sorry

OP posts:
Ifyouknowyouknow · 19/06/2019 23:01

The only person I know who is domestically abusive doesn’t drive, so I don’t think it would matter. If you’ve been able to convict them to even take their license in the first place then you’d already be half way there.

It’s root cause is about control, loss on control just makes a person who likes control even more angry.

Fatted · 19/06/2019 23:02

Well seeing as banning people from driving doesn't actually act as any kind of deterent for actual driving offenses, I can't see it making a bloody blind bit of difference.

Perhaps start with looking at putting more money into prisons so it can actually fit all the offenders in.

Then look at the CPS and their decisions not to take half the bloody cases to court in the first place. Then look at changing the law regarding sentencing etc. And also look at getting some better support for victims and witnesses so they actually bloody come forward in the first place.

1moreRep · 19/06/2019 23:02

it wouldn't be a deterrent- it would work deter victims reporting as the loss of income etc. Also employment and education are key in reducing reoffending.

Rashatash · 19/06/2019 23:03

Could there be temporary holds on licenses .
One day/ three days/ four days with the threat of full removal with any further offence?

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 19/06/2019 23:04

What about the impact on the children if the offender loses their job?

Liverpool52 · 19/06/2019 23:04

But what difference would it actually make? How would it impact the abuse?

Pikapikachooo · 19/06/2019 23:06

We would lose 30% of male drivers
Maybe more
So
A lot of train drivers , bus drivers , ambulance drivers , firemen , policemen
On call surgeons etc

While I see your point I don’t think it’s workable !

Idontwanttotalk · 19/06/2019 23:07

Pointless if the intention is to reduce domestic abuse. I would prefer abusers to be jailed even for a short term like one month.

We need better education in schools to empower people so that they do not accept domestic violence. We need zero tolerance of it by the police who should be more supportive of victims. The CPS should prosecute in EVERY case.

Taking driving licences away is not the answer.

bookmum08 · 19/06/2019 23:09

What if the person is a non driver and having a car isn't even on their radar? What punishment would they get? Having their telly taken away?
