DFS Sofa

AIBU in buying a DFS sofa online without viewing in store?

Sofa I like is on sale (still expensive though) and they don’t have any in stock near me - nowhere near me.

Anyone know what the returns process is like with DFS if needed?

Is this a bad idea?

In my experience all sofas are custom made so there is basically no returns unless it’s broken or faulty.

IsoscelesSandwich · 19/06/2019 20:05

I bought a Dfs sofa online without trying it first - massive mistake! I had had a dfs sofa before and loved it, this (seemed online) to be the same dimensions. In reality it’s a piece of crap. SO uncomfortable, and feels super cheap even though it was quite expensive. Lesson learned, never buy a sofa without sitting on it first. Impossible to return unless there’s something majorly wrong with it. I did try but they weren’t convinced that it being horrifically uncomfortable to sit on was a good enough reason. As soon as I’ve paid it off I’m getting rid and will get a nice sofa from elsewhere.

Dont bother with dfs, they are absolutely shit they look amazing but after about a month you'd think the sofa is 20 years old.

Rosachoc12 · 19/06/2019 20:07

Thanks everyone

Our dfs sofas are 5 years old and still good as new. I wouldn't buy one without trying it out though as it needs to feel comfy.

TheGoogleMum · 19/06/2019 20:52

We went in store and they didn't have exact one I had my eye on online but they had one similar that sales assistant suggested try. We are happy enough with the sofas (bought probably 4 years ago now)

paperandfireworks · 20/06/2019 00:18

Theres so much crap in DFS I wouldnt chance it.

creakingknees · 20/06/2019 00:43

I once bought a pair of expensive sofa's from DFS or Dodgy Fucking Sofas as we nicknamed it.
I paid a fortune for them and within a month of barely being sat on we had more problems than enough both with the sofa's ( falling apart, material fraying to name just 2 ) and even more problems with the store when trying to resolve it.
We ended up throwing the sofa's into the back of my husbands pick up, driving to the store and staging a sit down protest right outside their store.
The manager almost broke his neck to give us a full refund then.
The police were called, but as we were sat on the back of the pick up ( on the sofa's ) they wandered off again.
I would rather nail my flaps to the ceiling than shop in there again.

I ordered sofas online from DFS, a 3 and a 2 seater, and they turned up 2 different colours. One light brown and one dark blue so not even slightly similar! They wouldn't take the blue one back and I had to wait 5 weeks for a new brown sofa, but they did give me £150 back. I was then left with a random blue sofa that I gave to the British heart foundation. Their customer service was decent, but the whole experience was just a massive pain in the arse and I probably wouldn't order from them again

Doodledoom · 20/06/2019 06:24

I bought the hebden corner sofa offline without going to see it in person.

Im very happy with it and I've had no problems so far (had it just over a week)

ThisIsMyCurrentUsername · 20/06/2019 06:30

Never had a problem with DFS. Our last 3 sofas have been from there. This time we went round every sofa shop in the city (about 6 others) as we were determined to go more upmarket! We had quite specific measurements. I'm not joking when I say that no other shop could provide a sofa we liked with the right measurements. In fact 2 wouldn't even really help us and told us to go online.

Guess where we ended up?! Yep, DFS Grin Yes they are a cheaper company but they are really flexible with the designs so you are more likely to get what you want.

I would NEVER recommend buying one you haven't sat on first though.

Bluntness100 · 20/06/2019 06:35

We bought two of these, the grand pillow backs, and they are incredibly well made and the service was fantastic.

However I have a friend who also bought from them, and has problems but the sofas were replaced.

I’ve got a sofa from Dunelm arriving today that I’ve never seen.

Their delivery time is 3-5 days as opposed to 16 weeks from Sofaology which is the other place we looked at. Delivery is £10 (£75 at sofaology) and it’s free returns if we don’t like it.

LakieLady · 20/06/2019 06:52

If you buy online, the Distance Selling Regulations give you 28 days to change your mind. The seller then has to give you a refund

So, in that sense, you have more protection than if you paid cash in the shop.

Puppylucky · 20/06/2019 07:11

Watch out for Dunelm! I Bought a sofa online from them a few months ago and they delivered a completely different one. They then couldn't replace it with the one I had actually bought as it was now out of stock. I got my money back easily enough but it was such a waste of my time.

MrsMozartMkII · 20/06/2019 07:12

Having just been sofa shopping with DD I'd not risk buying one untried.

Have bought a few sofas from DFS and been happy with them. The trying is because it seems personal choice as to what one finds comfortable. I think we sat on almost every sofa the store had!

Rosachoc12 · 20/06/2019 07:49

It’s difficult. The one we are interested in fits our room dimensions (we think) and is the only one we’ve seen we like the look of. But it’s expensive, although currently has some money off in sale. With the distance selling, if the sofa comes and it’s not right do
DFS have to give us a refund? They don’t have any of the sofas in showrooms anywhere near us.

Most places , when you order online have a distance selling regulation (usually 7 days) . This means you have a few days to change your mind as you have purchased from online and not had as chance to see the item, feel the material etc. You will have to check how long their limit is on returning it if not suitable but most company's offer this.

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 20/06/2019 08:08

10 year old sofas here that look as good as new.

No kids or animals, though, which I suspect helps.

Ellabella989 · 20/06/2019 08:10

Bought a DFS sofa online 3 months ago as it seemed to be the only one that would fit through our awkwardly shaped house without issues. Reviews said it was really comfortable etc. It’s the most uncomfortable sofa ever and my DP refuses to sit on it ever

LoganPeanutButter · 20/06/2019 08:10

Consumer Contract regulations only apply to your order if the goods have not been custom made to your specification or if you have not examined the product in one of our showrooms. If the Consumer Contract Regulations do apply you can cancel your furniture by notifying us, in writing, before delivery or within 14 working days beginning with the day after the date of delivery. This is from their website hope it helps. Smile

Toooldtobearsed2 · 20/06/2019 08:15

Which sofa is it? Comfort is a personal thing, but someone might be able to say if they found it comfy and well made or not.
We have 6 sofas in our home at moment, all from DfS. 2 of them are over 10 years old, they newest, just a year old. We have never had a problem with any of them.

Lasteleven · 20/06/2019 08:16

I would want to try it first. It’s a big purchase if it turns out to be uncomfortable. Dfs have regular sales, so personally I’d prefer to wait until I could get to a branch with that sofa in stock, even if it meant waiting for the next sake.

If you really don’t want to wait, could you post the model name in case anyone’s had an issue or can recommend it?

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 20/06/2019 08:16

I wouldn't chance it. Comfort is the most important thing with a sofa, so buying one without knowing how comfortable it is isn't a great idea!

My DFS sofas are six years old and look fine.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 20/06/2019 08:26

Message above - I said two of the sofas were 10 years old. DH has just pointed out that we bought them when we moved here sixteen years ago😶
