We had a quote for some work in our garden, which was £1300. we agreed to it, mainly through inexperience I think.

The Gardner’s came to do the work today and it took 3 of them 4 hours.

Given that materials could be bought for £300, aibu to not want to pay them £300 each for a half day?

I‘ve questioned the invoice and they said they estimated it would take a day, and they only quite by days.

We did agree to the quote. But it feels like a total rip off.

The work they did is ok. Sufficient. No above and beyond, just sufficient.

Suck it up. They quoted for the job, They have done the job.

Jeezoh · 19/06/2019 18:53

If you were quoted for the total price of the job, not an hourly rate, then I don’t think there’s much you can do.

lyralalala · 19/06/2019 18:53

They gave a quote, you accepted the quote, they did the work so you should pay the bill.

If you didn’t want to pay that amount for the work you shouldn’t have asked them to do the work after the quote.

ThatsUnusual · 19/06/2019 18:54

....you ageed to the quote.

Pay them what you agreed.

BlueSkiesLies · 19/06/2019 18:54

They quoted for the job.
You accepted.
They did the job sufficiently.
You pay up!

gingerginger2 · 19/06/2019 18:55

I‘m freelance too. I‘d never dream of invoicing for more hours than I actually worked. If I overestimated in my quote i‘d Be embarrassed and modify the invoice.

If you thought the job was worth 1300 quid before hand and they've done the job to your satisfaction then pay them.

Or agree an hourly rate in future (and watch them work at snail's pace)

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 19/06/2019 18:57

Did they invoice you for the job or for a set number of hours?

Teddybear45 · 19/06/2019 18:57

You agreed to it so you should pay.

BringOnTheScience · 19/06/2019 18:58

If the job had taken them longer than they'd thought, you'd expect to pay the same.

Youngandfree · 19/06/2019 18:59

Is the job completed?
Are you happy with the work?
Is it exactly what you asked for?
If the answer to those is yes then you need to pay them!

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 19/06/2019 19:00

And what do you expect them to do with the other half of their day? They would be booked on you job.

People amaze me. Pay up.

gingerginger2 · 19/06/2019 19:01

They quoted for the job.

I‘m pretty inexperienced when it comes to landscape gardening so just thought it was a days work.

Of course you have to pay Hmm

They gave you a quote which you accepted. They did the job. It's irrelevant how long it actually took.

PaperFlowers4 · 19/06/2019 19:03

I can’t even believe you are considering trying to get out of paying the quoted amount.

category12 · 19/06/2019 19:03

If they've done the job satisfactorily, then you pay up. That's what you agreed to.

BIWI · 19/06/2019 19:03

Well it was more than a day's work - you had 3 people each working 4 hours - so the total was 12 hours work.

gingerginger2 · 19/06/2019 19:03

Really? So you can just estimate what you like and if it bears no relation to the time you spend then you get paid the same? Isn‘t that you quoting wrong?

OP posts:
Expressedways · 19/06/2019 19:04

As others have said, you agreed to the quote which was for the entire job (not £x per hour + materials) and they did the work to the expected standard. Of course you should pay the agreed amount and you should do so promptly. Can’t believe you’re questioning it to be honest, if you don’t pay they can and probably will pursue legal action against you.

creamofcarnation · 19/06/2019 19:04

You agreed to it !

category12 · 19/06/2019 19:05

They quoted for the job, not time spent. You're paying for their skills and what was achieved.

dreichuplands · 19/06/2019 19:05

Did they charge by the hour? Did the quote say it will be x because it will take y hours? If so you have something to go back and challenge them with. If you just assumed the time frame and accepted the quote then you just need to pay.

Xmr1986 · 19/06/2019 19:05

For landscaping there is normally a day charge minimum. They have charged as normal. Would you rather have paid the same amount to two men who took the whole day?

cherryblossomgin · 19/06/2019 19:05

You should pay the agreed price. Tbf 1300 seems a fair price for labour and materials. If three people worked on the job then its three people who need paid.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/06/2019 19:06

Lots of companies do this- just put lots of people on the job to get it finished ASAP. We had about 6 men doing our drive and it was done in 2 days- 1 or 2 men obviously could’ve stretched it out a week but the quicker the better IMO.

Yes you have to pay. They can’t change their quote so why do you think you could?
