Does your cleaner....

Pick up items that are on the floor?!

I'm not talking heaps of clothes/junk etc, but just odd items that are on the floor when she is there?

Today's examples

  • Two A4 posters have fallen off DD's door in her bedroom. They are still there, on the floor behind the door.
  • Same for a teddy that fell out of bed; left on the floor.
  • DH's fathers day card blew off the bedside table; left on the floor
  • pair of socks and a tennis ball left in the middle of ds's floor

We are a pretty minimal family; there is not much clutter/mess, so it is very noticeable when something is on the floor.

Is this weird?

My cleaner does way more than I expect so I can definitely say that if that had been my house, all would have been picked up and carefully put away or put wherever looked best. My cleaner is amazing though. Grin

LadyWho · 19/06/2019 19:49

And yes mine will make all the beds Blush, do the dishes etc even though I keep telling her not to.

cindersrella · 19/06/2019 19:54

I'd make beds, put crocks away. Cleaning windowsills is just a given?

I stripped a bed the other day that was wet (person hadn't noticed) washed and dried it.... (twins and a hectic job) busy busy family) to be honest I just try and do what I can to help.

I do know cleaners that are not as confident in people's homes though and who would do what I do as they think some people wouldn't like it.

I have looked after older people in the past in extra care housing who need people to help them in this way so it's possibly built into me from then?

cindersrella · 19/06/2019 19:56

Oh sorry... windows inside.. I do this as standard but some cleaners charge extra..

SusieOwl4 · 19/06/2019 20:05

my cleaners only clean not tidy . I have to do that before they come . They don't do ovens or fridges or beds or anything like that . But make a very good job of bathrooms . I don't have them do my bedroom or ensuite though only downstairs . I am naturally a very untidy person and it takes me ages to tidy before they come . My mum on the other hand when she was a cleaner would go above and beyond for her customers , and would tidy and clean .

Beds - yes as long as it's not a full hospital corners type bed. Mine straightens the duvet and plumps pillows.

Cups - previous one did, current doesn't. I'd prefer she did but I understand why not.

Windows - not unless I ask because I want her to skip something else. Eg, can't do the downstairs shower so clean the downstairs windows instead.

My previous cleaner used to do more in the way of tidying and finishing but less rooms overall my current cleaner does more overall but less in the detail. Either way there's always gaps i need to fill by doing some cleaning myself which I what I'd expect for 2hrs in a 4 bed house. If I was richer I'd pay for another 2 and never clean again! 🤣

Justbreathing · 19/06/2019 20:45

Surely beds is the best ever reason for a cleaner. Fresh linen. Aaaah
But I do strip it first. Not sure why
Middle class guilt probably

Looobyloo · 19/06/2019 20:53

Cleaner here. I always pick things up off floors, as far I'm concerned it's my job to leave the house I'm cleaning tidy as well. I used to clean for a lady with four small children, I had a LOT of picking up to do but I didn't mind, she was very busy (and lovely) so I just got on with it.

I clean windows, make beds or change beds if asked, fold clothes.
I always think my job is to make the home owners life a little easier.

Looobyloo · 19/06/2019 21:00

I've hung curtains, I've walked dogs. One woman even had me washing her garage door though I did explain it really wasn't my job Grin
I do have some elderly clients as well. I've assisted them to the toilet, made them lunch, helped them get up and dressed, rang the council to empty their bins, how could you not if they're struggling.

Tensixtysix · 19/06/2019 21:01

I'm a cleaner and some clients are very thoughtful and will put all the bath toys and bottles in a carrier bag.
But others leave everything in the bath, tons of wet toys, shampoo bottles, bath bubble bottles all down the edges of the bath.
Takes so long to move everything!
One even leaves dirty bath water in there because the plug is blocked!
I so want to give notice sometimes Angry

My cleaner is brilliant, but her job is to clean our house, not to tidy it up first, which would reduce cleaning time by about half. We tidy everything away, or as much as we can, before she cleans. But if we inadvertently left some stuff out, she would put it away or tidy it up. She works for 3 hours each week, which is enough for a good clean in all of the main rooms/bathrooms in the house. If there was stuff to tidy away she’d never get round the main rooms. When we’re on holiday and house already clean, she will clean inside of windows, non regular rooms etc. I’d not expect her to wash or change our bedding etc.

kidsmakesomuchwashing · 19/06/2019 21:54

I tidy up everything for my cleaner that way she can spend her time cleaning not tidying!

carrotfaery · 19/06/2019 23:10

I'm a cleaner and would pick those things up so I could clean properly. It does irritate me a bit though if people leave a load of things lying around for me to pick up, especially dirty socks! I don't expect everything to be super tidy, just move stuff off the surfaces that want cleaning.

I don't live in the UK and where I am a lot more people use cleaners as it's cheaper, most cleaners work for larger agencies and are more like a 'household help' than a cleaner. What I do for my clients depends on what they need, mostly it's just standard cleaning (windows included) but I've had clients who are elderly or have mobility issues and for them I've done stuff like food prep, dishes, laundry, tidying and organising. I also do ironing.

AlphaJura · 20/06/2019 07:16

I'm a cleaner and maybe I'm lucky in that the people I clean for always make sure there isn't anything on the floor. If for example, they've got some boxes out of the loft or a cupboard that are there temporarily they just say go round that for now. I do move furniture though and hoover underneath regularly. If I ever find anything that's rolled underneath a chair like a children's toy, I just pick it up and leave it on the nearest surface. They may have lost it. If I came across a couple of posters on the floor, I personally would've tidied them away, put on the side or a table so I could hoover the floor properly.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 20/06/2019 07:24

Would pick up small items like that, clean inside windows , make beds. Don’t put cups/plates etc away or wash them

Rosemary46 · 20/06/2019 07:31

I tidy first but yes of course she picks up random items that have fallen. The kids thrown balled up socks around so there’s sometimes one behind the sofa etc. Given that she cleans the loos and the kitchen bins, she is brave enough to pick up a teenaged boys sock without fainting.

Vacuuming around a mug that someone has left on the floor is just plain weird IMO. If she did that I’d be asking her why.
