Does your cleaner....

Pick up items that are on the floor?!

I'm not talking heaps of clothes/junk etc, but just odd items that are on the floor when she is there?

Today's examples

  • Two A4 posters have fallen off DD's door in her bedroom. They are still there, on the floor behind the door.
  • Same for a teddy that fell out of bed; left on the floor.
  • DH's fathers day card blew off the bedside table; left on the floor
  • pair of socks and a tennis ball left in the middle of ds's floor

We are a pretty minimal family; there is not much clutter/mess, so it is very noticeable when something is on the floor.

Is this weird?

I tidy for the cleaner but if I'd missed something or the cat knocked something off, I'd expect the cleaner to pick it up and at least pop it on the nearest surface so she could hoover.

Yabbers · 19/06/2019 16:07

Mine does. I hate it. We tidy up before he comes, if something is on the floor, it’s supposed to be there.

martinidry · 19/06/2019 16:09

A poster which has dropped from the wall, dc's toys within reason (eg a few teddies, not mountains of Sylvanians or Lego, sure.
Dirty socks or other laundry? No, that's completely disrespectful. A good relationship between cleaner and client is built on mutual trust and respect.

dreichuplands · 19/06/2019 16:09

Our cleaners have always picked up and piled small items, I would expect this. I wouldn't expect them to clean as thoroughly if they did lots of tidying because they only have the time they have.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/06/2019 16:12

Mine is pretty useless. She drinks a lot of tea and sends me selfies of her on the sofa cuddling the dogs watching tv 😂

But she is my Mum, so I can't exactly sack her. And she's cheap 👍🏻

HappyintheHills · 19/06/2019 16:17

I gather up to my room anything that would get in the way of cleaning.
If he finds something that’s been dropped he puts it up in the nearest eye level surface so that I can deal with it.

cindersrella · 19/06/2019 16:19

Teaandbi5cuit5 unfortunately not although I do love your line of thinking 😂

STST · 19/06/2019 16:19

@CaptainMyCaptain - we had a lovely cleaner growing up who used to put all our shoes away.

In the hostess trolley. We think she thought it was a shoe warmer/dryer.

This thread is interesting to me.. I do go above and beyond really (fold clothes up, put toys away, put books that are thrown into piles nice, dress rooms as much as possible as well as clean them.

I suppose it depends on your expectations also when you get a cleaner..

a few of the houses I go into I could spend the whole time just tidying up sometimes. I always make people aware that the amount of time I have for a clean is reduced if I have to tidy up to clean...

STST · 19/06/2019 16:30

@cindersrella - think our previous cleaner was more like you, she was just wonderful, it looked like a hotel when she'd finished!

How about:
making beds?
putting away cups/washing up on the draining board?
cleaning windows (inside)?

thecatsthecats · 19/06/2019 16:33

I aim to have everywhere she's working about 95% clear (i.e. literally if I usually have 20 items there, I'd think I'd done a reasonable job to get it down to 1).

Cleaner will pick up the rest happily so that she can clean thoroughly.

We basically can't move everything because there's not somewhere to put everything (so rug, throws and cushions will go on one sofa, she'll vaccuum the other for pet hair, switch the cushions etc over to the other, do that, then put everything nicely presented when she's all finished). We also leave a very small amount of morning detritus from cleaning day - the odd mug or glass we used.

thecatsthecats · 19/06/2019 16:34

Just to add the 'hotel' look is part of the reason I love her - she is a good but not perfect cleaner, but the fact everything looks so fancy when we get home is the best!

musicinthewoods · 19/06/2019 16:35

I've always wondered why people have cleaners - these posts always leave me with the same opinion that you are expected to clean for the cleaner!

ThisIsBonIver · 19/06/2019 16:37

Our current cleaner piles up anything that might get in her way (post etc). Previous cleaners binned anything they found on the floor. Including a birthday gift wrapped up and in a labelled gift bag waiting to be handed over that evening. That was the last
time we used them. I was flabbergasted and she did not understand why it was an issue.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 19/06/2019 16:39

I’m a cleaner and would lift it all. Yes, I’m a cleaner, not a tidier but come on! How can you properly clean a floor with that sort of stuff on it? Answer: you can’t. I want my clients to walk into a room and with a satisfied sigh think “this is why I pay a cleaner” rather than “oh, it’s still looks messy”. Truth be told I do a fair bit of tidying while I clean because I’m just not prepared to leave a room messy. It’s not the impression I want to leave.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 19/06/2019 16:43

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 19/06/2019 16:44

I meant to post Grin on that post too!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 19/06/2019 16:47

How about:
making beds? yep, as standard unless asked not to. Strip and make up with fresh sheets of clean ones are left out for me and dirty in machine then hang to dry once washed.

putting away cups/washing up on the draining board? yep, always.

cleaning windows (inside)? only if asked or if doing a deep clean.

AyBeeCee10 · 19/06/2019 17:13

Yes I would expect her to. How is she cleaning the floors or those areas with the items still there?

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 19/06/2019 17:24

Yes, I would expect any normal human being to pick up things that have fallen on the floor. By leaving the dirty socks, I am assuming she is making some kind of point?

Cleaners can he helpers, some are more than happy to walk the dogs, put your shopping away, change the bedsheets. You just need to discuss what you want and what they agree to do.

ZenNudist · 19/06/2019 17:31

I try and tidy as much as possible but would expect cleaner to pick up stuff not hoover round it.

making beds - well i make my own beds but every other week cleaner strips beds does laundry and hangs out to dry remaking beds with fresh sheets.

putting away cups/washing up on the draining board - yes but i try to do this. I do expect dishwasher to be unstacked if i request it but dont expect my things to go in exactly the right places!

cleaning windows (inside) yes with glass cleaner as needed and generally ever other week on a non bedding week.

silvercuckoo · 19/06/2019 18:06

My cleaner picks up, tidies up and folds / puts away the laundry. I thought it is standard.

wotsittoyou · 19/06/2019 18:30

I make sure nothing is on the floor, but I'm sure our cleaner wouldn't leave something if I did. She once sat ds's teddy on an armchair and covered it with a little blanket. Super cute. You can tell she really enjoys her job.

dellacucina · 19/06/2019 18:52

My cleaner does, even though I have actually asked her not to...
