Aibu to prefer salad cream to mayo in a sandwich?

Which do you prefer to add to your sandwich, is it salad cream or mayo? For me it's definitely salad cream (has to be Heinz) as it has a tangy flavour and feels light compared to mayo which I think is heavy, with not much flavour just eggy really. A lot of sandwich shops / cafes still don't have salad cream, such as today the guy making my chicken and salad sandwich said I was the only regular customer who asks for salad cream as 'everyone' prefers mayo! As an aside can anyone tell me if I can buy little individual packets of salad cream anywhere to put in my handbag so I can stop hassling sandwich guy? So I need this very important question answered please!

Oh my goodness I love roll mops with eggs!

multivac · 18/06/2019 23:04

Warm cheese and onion pasty. Hot baked beans. Cold salad cream.

Oh yes. Oh yes, yes, yes.

About 20 years ago I had an emergency meal in a Tesco cafe. Cornish pasty, beans, chips and gravy. It was amazing. It's stuck with me all this time. Weird.

I am so hungry now. I want every condiment in the fridge...

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 18/06/2019 23:10

You are a dirty animal! Salad cream is sent by the devil himself.

Grandma use to give me sandwiches filled with salad cream abs a shaving of cheese as a child, even the thought of salad cream now 🤢

Butterfly98 · 18/06/2019 23:34

Now I want to know if there's been a poll to find out what the nations favourite sandwich is? It probably doesn't include salad cream but my guess is it's mature cheddar cheese and Branston pickle (which I also love!) on white bread, what do you think?

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 18/06/2019 23:52

Branston pickle should be outlawed, and cheese goes best with granary or wholemeal (unless it's a toastie), sorry OP...

Usuallyinthemiddle · 18/06/2019 23:59

Ooh, vinegary yellow American mustard... I'm turning into a condiment freak.

flyingspaghettimonster · 19/06/2019 00:06

Salad cream with ham or egg. Mayo with tuna, chicken etc.

PregnantSea · 19/06/2019 00:11

YABVU OP. Salad cream is not a patch on mayo!

PineappleTits · 19/06/2019 00:17

I made a toastie today and put a huge blob of salad cream on the side and just mopped it up with my sandwich. Gorge

Harebel · 19/06/2019 00:17

YANBU OP Salad cream rocks.

No idea why PP think that a preference for salad cream makes you "common" because mass produced "mayo" is rank and quite frankly unless you are making your own mayo it's pretty much the same minus the 'tang'. I hate the fact that most places put mass produced cheap shit "mayo" in their sandwiches.

whatthewhatthewhat · 19/06/2019 00:19

How do I report and get this maddens deleted??!!

Mayo, all the way BIATCHES!

whatthewhatthewhat · 19/06/2019 00:19

*madness

Nat6999 · 19/06/2019 00:41

Salad cream with Chicken & chips, egg & salad cream sandwiches, salad cream on salmon salad, salad sandwiches. Only thing I use mayo for is tuna pasta salad, otherwise it's always Heinz salad cream.

xsquared · 19/06/2019 00:42

I'm probably in the minority here but I loathe salad cream. It's greasy and artificial tasting. What even is it? Can you make your own version of it?

Mayo on the other hand, is absolutely wonderful in potato salad, roast potatoes and chips. I spent part of my childhood in Belgium so the fast food restaurants would have pots of mayonnaise for you to dip your fries in.

xsquared · 19/06/2019 00:44

Some friends at uni used to buy salad cream as part of their groceries. One day, one of our housemates commented that salad cream smells of sick. She realised that he was right and never bought it again!

MrsTommyBanks · 19/06/2019 00:50

I love salad cream. Not keen on mayo.

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 19/06/2019 00:55

I had a very working-class upbringing in the 70s and early 80s. I don’t think I even knew that mayo existed until I arrived at university.

Clusterfukt · 19/06/2019 00:59

Oh my god what fresh hell have I stumbled in to here?

LadyRannaldini · 19/06/2019 11:31

Why would it be unreasonable to have a food preference?
A friend's grandmother, years ago, used to make an amazing mustardy version of salad cream, sadly I think the recipe died with her.
Lidl do a wonderful roasted onion and garlic mayo, it's in the small cubic jars.

Butterfly98 · 19/06/2019 13:39

@LadyRannaldini no I don't think it is unusual at all to have a food preference so I agree with you! It's other people who think it's unusual namely sandwich shops and cafes who the majority of times don't stock salad cream and often say they only ever get asked for mayo, in fact one particular sandwich shop which is well known seem a bit irked if I request it!

Salad cream is runny artificial tasting vinegary muck.

Mayo is thick, creamy and luxurious.

You can't dip your chips in salad cream!

But you are not unreasonable to stick to your salad cream if that is what you prefer.

AuntieMarys · 20/06/2019 08:44

I ate a whole head of celery dipped in salad cream yesterday.

notso · 20/06/2019 08:55

I don't really like either in a sandwich too soggy to be near bread.

I haven't eaten salad cream since the nineties. My grandma used to make roast chicken dinner in the winter and in the summer we'd have the chicken, roast and mashed potatoes and boiled carrots with lettuce, cucumber and salad cream.
