Aibu to prefer salad cream to mayo in a sandwich?

Which do you prefer to add to your sandwich, is it salad cream or mayo? For me it's definitely salad cream (has to be Heinz) as it has a tangy flavour and feels light compared to mayo which I think is heavy, with not much flavour just eggy really. A lot of sandwich shops / cafes still don't have salad cream, such as today the guy making my chicken and salad sandwich said I was the only regular customer who asks for salad cream as 'everyone' prefers mayo! As an aside can anyone tell me if I can buy little individual packets of salad cream anywhere to put in my handbag so I can stop hassling sandwich guy? So I need this very important question answered please!

I bloody hate mayo.

For potato salad I use salad cream and a dollop of sour cream. Chopped chives and some crispy bacon pieces goes down a treat!

GreyGardens88 · 18/06/2019 21:40

Salad Cream is tastier. It just is. I like Mayo too but only have it in shop bought sandwiches as salad cream never available. I always use salad cream at home

Deadlysinner · 18/06/2019 21:40

YABVVU! Ex-DP's mum used to make tuna mayo with half salad cream! It was inedible! I once saved a sachet of salad cream for someone that did like it from my school lunch salad. I remembered it a week later when there was a strange white gunk in my purse!

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/06/2019 21:41

Salad cream

MrHaroldFry · 18/06/2019 21:41

When living overseas I used this BBC recipe to make Salad Cream. It wasn't perfect but a lot better than mayo.

Salad Cream ONLY, I can't stand the taste and greasy, claggy mouth feel of mayonnaise.

As Korvalscat said it has to be Heinz Original Salad Cream definitely none of that 'Light' crap, I even been known to buy the bottle instead of the squeezy version.

wendywoopywoo222 · 18/06/2019 21:44

Love salad cream. Don't like Mayo. It's claggy and has a nasty texture.

Butterfly98 · 18/06/2019 21:44

@Dahlietta really I haven't heard about the possibility of salad cream becoming extinct! It now sounds like an endangered species! Shall I start a campaign to 'save our salad cream'?

I LOVE salad cream 😋 It goes best on chips but I have it in sandwiches too. Egg, tuna, cheese, ham - the only sandwich I have mayo on is a BLT.

origamiunicorn · 18/06/2019 21:46

Salad cream! It's also better with tuna in a jacket potato 🥰

orangeshoebox · 18/06/2019 21:47

isn't salat cream just mayo 'diluted' with cream?

CherryPavlova · 18/06/2019 21:47

It depends entirely on the sandwich.
Marie Rose with prawns
Mayonnaise with crab or salmon
Mustard with ham
Salad cream with egg and tomato.
Chutney with cheese.
Cream cheese with smoked salmon

Accountant222 · 18/06/2019 21:48

Definitely salad cream over mayonnaise

bridgetreilly · 18/06/2019 21:48

YABU.

Also, this is the PERFECT thread for a vote button.

Tartyflette · 18/06/2019 21:50

But, but, but.... salad cream is so sweet, and yet too vinegary as well.
Mayo (Hellman's Light for sandwiches or homemade for good stuff like fresh asparagus) is not nearly so overwhelming to other flavours.
Potato salad is best dressed with a little vinaigrette first and then some mayo. Not too much. See the Felicity Cloake weekly column in The Grauniad "The Perfect....".

origamiunicorn · 18/06/2019 21:50

*isn't salat cream just mayo 'diluted' with cream?

Noooo there's mustard and some sort of spice concoction and all sorts 😁

Butterfly98 · 18/06/2019 21:51

Yes @CassandraCross it definitely has to be Heinz original salad cream and nothing else measures up! I bought the light one once and my DD who is also a salad cream lover asked if it was gone off, it tasted awful!

PencereTencere · 18/06/2019 21:52

Salad cream is wonderful stuff. Try it in a bacon sandwich sometime... sounds hideous but is really delicious.

I'm very pleased that DC1 has inherited my love of the stuff and asks for a bit in her sandwich regularly.

Butterfly98 · 18/06/2019 21:53

@bridgetreilly is there a vote button now? I didn't know that!

cherry you missed rare roast beef with horseradish.
And ox tongue with piccalilli. Grin

CherryPavlova · 18/06/2019 21:55

Definitely not Ox tongue but corned beef with piccalilli
Yes Beef with horseradish definitely.

misskatamari · 18/06/2019 21:56

Gosh I've not had salad cream for years and really want some now! It's all I knew growing up as my mum hated Mayo. I don't think I even tried mayo until I went to uni. Now I mostly use mayo on things, but salad cream is brilliant with cheese, egg, ham, tuna... I'm buying some tomorrow!

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 18/06/2019 21:59

Salad cream is far superior to mayonnaise which is just flavourless slime.

Butterfly98 · 18/06/2019 22:00

@misskatamari yes another customer for 'save our salad cream' campaign, it just can't be allowed to become extinct!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 18/06/2019 22:00

i like them both, and use them together in "dressings" for salads and potato salad

But what i really like is toast, just the brown side of Very Well Done, allowed to go cold, buttered thickly with salad cream drizzled over

I am not bothered about brand....usually pick up tesco own tbh...but do they still do the bottle shaped jar for heinz?? I might lash out and treat myself

I could really go for a warm boiled egg sarnie ...eggs just set, chopped into a bowl containing generous blobs of mayo and salad cream and some really really finely sliced spring onion, mix well, slather on bread and salt generously, cram in mouth!
