To ask for your help in songs (not hymns) suitable for funeral for someone finally released from pain?

Just that. Looking for an uplifting song to end a funeral service with for someone who's finally released from horrific suffering.

Ideally country or reggae (as those their personal preferences) Appreciate any suggestions. This is best, most beautiful, one so far but mentions a Grandad and there's no Grandad in this persons background.

Brad Paisley - When I Get Where I'm Going ft. Dolly Parton (Official Video)

Appreciate any experience and suggestions. TIA Flowers

I love As I lay me down to sleep by Sophie b Hawkins

AndTheSeaRollsOn · 18/06/2019 10:45

Was there a song they particularly loved? I think that is the most appropriate, it may not be traditional but I always think that is lovely and uplifting in itself as it honours them.

Sorry for your loss Flowers

Landslide (Fleetwood Mac song) cover by the Dixie Chicks

Fabellini · 18/06/2019 10:51

“There You’ll Be” Faith Hill. Dh died after a long time of pain and suffering and it makes me think of him being free now.
Sorry for your loss x

I chose fields of gold by Eva Cassidy. Sad but kind of about redemption and freedom to me.

As I Lay Me Down is a lovely thought. Gorgeous song.

Or how about...

I Hope You Dance, Lee Ann Womack.

For a Dancer, Jackson Browne. Katey Sagal has done a lovely cover of this song, too.

stucknoue · 18/06/2019 10:57

Not country but dd say somewhere over the rainbow at a funeral last week. She's sung all kinds of songs, the best being a sound of music themed funeral complete with costumes!

Green Green Grass of Home (Elvis version has a country feel)

Seasons in the Sun (Terry Jacks)
Spirit In the Sky (Norman Greenbaum version)

Very sorry. Please scrap my last thought. I didn't realise for sure, but I just checked, and Green Green Grass of Home is about prison. Bad idea.

CaptainJaneway62 · 18/06/2019 11:11

This is a reggae type version of

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Deanetta · 18/06/2019 11:12

I once went to a memorial service where they played Into The West by Annie Lennox. It was very moving.

starryeyedsnowgirl · 18/06/2019 11:16

Norah jones- the long day is over. My dad died last year after a long struggle with alcoholism and depression and it seemed appropriate. (Doesn't specifically mention either just the long hard day is over and now resting by the fore or something. Made me think he might now be at peace).

Sorry for your loss.

starryeyedsnowgirl · 18/06/2019 11:18

Sorry ignore me- it's not reggae.

MrsSpenserGregson · 18/06/2019 11:18

Not country / reggae but I've been to a funeral where We Are Sailing (by Rod Stewart) was played . It was absolutely amazing and so appropriate. The deceased had been a pilot, and his main hobby was sailing, and when the verse "We are flying" started I think everyone just turned to each other and said "yessssssss." He had suffered horribly with cancer, and we felt like he was sailing/flying away into a painless release.

Crying as I write this!

Reggae-wise, how about Take Me Home Country Roads ...?

Keep me in your heart by Warren Zevon. He wrote it as a goodbye when he was dying from lung cancer, and it gets me every time. It mentions his illness 'shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath', but the main message is him speaking to his family/friends 'sometimes when you're doing little things around the house, maybe you'll think of me and smile. You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse, keep me in your heart for a while'

My dad died of cancer, and while I only belatedly found this song, it's now one I associate with my dad, as he himself wrote songs and I can imagine him saying those words to me.

Go rest high on the mountain is very poignant by Vince Gill.

So sorry for your loss

Ocies · 18/06/2019 11:23

My dd sang a song called 'Homeward Bound' at my dm's funeral a couple of years ago. This is the one - sung by Katherine Jenkins (not my favourite, but gives you an idea!)

CaptainJaneway62 · 18/06/2019 11:25

Here's Jimmy Cliff - I can see clearly now

Ash39 · 18/06/2019 11:27

Gary Barlow wrote this song "Let me Go" for his child after she died. Very uplifting

chezbot · 18/06/2019 11:27

Drift away by Dobie Gray

Alsohuman · 18/06/2019 11:29

Three Little Birds, Bob Marley. Come to think of it, I’d quite like that at mine.

Fleurygirl · 18/06/2019 11:34

My suggestion would be "I Shall Be Released", by Nina Simone (or maybe it's just her cover of it?) I'm very sorry for your loss. There are some beautiful suggestions here that will hopefully provide some comfort to you.
