To leave side roads clear in queuing traffic

I always do this but drivers behind me don’t seem to like it.
I’m mostly talking about junctions with traffic lights. Light turns green for me, I edge forward but if I can’t clear the junction due to queuing traffic ahead I’ll wait and keep the side road clear. I often get beeped at / someone nestling up my backside gesticulating if I do it.
Just wondering what other people do.
I’m only going off what I was taught 3 years ago as a learner.
Should I just ignore them or shall I move forward to effectively claim my space but potentially block someone from exiting or entering the side road ?

I always leave side roads clear and have lost count of the amount of times I've been beeped at by the idiot behind me!

I'm the same OP, I was always taught to keep them clear. It doesn't make sense not to. Drivers just seem to be getting more and more impatient in general, don't they?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/06/2019 18:32

I do it too... I quite enjoy the Mirror Dance by the driver behind Smile

I also move nice and slowly to allow people to weave into the main road, but do get shirty if a 2nd or 3rd car tries to leap out. Stop! You weave on my terms matey!!

Keep on as you are. It is people like us that reduce gridlocks

Spinnaret · 17/06/2019 18:32

I do the same as you. Drives me mad when drivers block side roads and then studiously ignore you, staring fixedly ahead, pretending not to notice you there.

Nesssie · 17/06/2019 18:32

I always leave them clear. It’s annoying when people don’t and then some wants to turn into that road and can’t, blocking the other lanes up too.

CallieOMalley · 17/06/2019 18:33

I will leave it clear but at a specific junction near me I do get annoyed when it’s our right of way and the car in front let’s four cars out in front. Especially if it means not getting through the next set of lights.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/06/2019 18:34

I do too in case any cars want to exit and go the other way. Or if cars travelling in the opposite direction need to turn into the side road.
It's amazing how many impatient idiots think a few feet of space is worth getting arsey over.

Sirzy · 17/06/2019 18:37

Keeps traffic flowing much better if side streets aren’t blocked.

The best I had was the driver who overtook me and pulled into the gap I had left Hmm

Shakirasma · 17/06/2019 18:40

YANBU Highway code rule 151

To leave side roads clear in queuing traffic
AnneElliott · 17/06/2019 18:43

I do the same as you op. I also get beeped. Mainly by red faced blokes in BMWs.

I did once have someone try to overtake and jump in the gap. I saw them move, I moved forward (so now blocking the side road) and they got stuck in the right turn only lane!

sugarcubed · 17/06/2019 18:45

I keep them clear too OP, not like any of us are going anywhere anytime soon by inching forward a few feet. Ignore those beeping at you.

Theimpossiblegirl · 17/06/2019 18:45

Keep doing what you're doing.
There are several sets of dreadful roadworks on my commute at the moment. What is really refreshing is that everyone is just being really cool about it, letting people out, leaving nice gaps, keeping it flowing as nicely as possible.

starzig · 17/06/2019 18:46

If you done that at the junction on my road out to work in the morning, I would be annoyed. And you wouldn't be going anywhere as the left turners would be still going round when you go red and there would still be nowhere to pull over to.

WeeDangerousSpike · 17/06/2019 18:49

I always leave side roads clear. I've never been beeped at.

I've often had to reverse back a bit to let someone in or out at a very oblique angle because the prat in front has partially blocked the junction.

81Byerley · 17/06/2019 18:58

I do the same...ignore people trying to force you to move on!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 17/06/2019 19:28

Do Not Block Intersections is the law in my state. Punishable by a ticket and a fine. They must be left open for police, fire, ambulance vehicles and for cross street traffic.

PettyContractor · 17/06/2019 19:35

The exception to not stopping in the junction for me is when turning right at the lights nearest my home. The only way it is possible to turn right into the main road is for two or three cars to queue in the junction until the light is red, then carry on through.

JustTwoMoreSecs · 17/06/2019 19:40

Thank you for doing it OP!
I live near a junction with pedestrian crossings all around and in diagonal and as soon as the traffic is dense the junction is never clear when it is the pedestrians turn to cross. Very annoying, especially for wheelchair and buggy users.

sirmione16 · 17/06/2019 19:50

If the traffics moving then you must move. It's your right of way

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/06/2019 19:51

I was taught this too. Safer for everyone and keeps traffic congestion from spreading.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 17/06/2019 19:52

You’re doing the right thing. Though it’s annoying when you want to turn left and you’re behind someone doing this and so preventing you from reaching the junction.

SerenDippitty · 17/06/2019 19:57

I leave them clear. Bloody annoying when I come to my own road and can’t turn into it because it’s blocked and there’s line of traffic waiting behind me.

MaximusHeadroom · 17/06/2019 19:58

YANBU

I used to drive in France where this rule either doesn't exist or isn't respected.

In bad traffic I once sat through 11 changes of lights because the cars on the bigger road filled the junction and didn't move on until my light was back on red.

Took me 30 minutes to get through that junction Shock

TheBouguets · 17/06/2019 19:59

It is all very well that a few people follow the rules of the road and are courteous to other drivers, the problem is that there are so many selfish types who seem to think that their lives are more important than the rest of us.
If there was more enforcement of traffic issues perhaps people would learn.

My pet hate is pavement parking and parking within 10 metres of a corner. Large vehicles cant get through with one side parked at the kerb and one side pavement parked.

LakieLady · 17/06/2019 20:05

I always leave them clear. There's a junction near me where people frequently block the junction, despite the words "keep clear" being painted on the carriageway in letters about a metre high.

It's bloody annoying when I'm waiting ages to turn right. And I love the way the offending drivers studiously look in every other direction to avoid making eye contact!

Treaclesweet · 17/06/2019 20:23

Also roundabouts! If you're parked on the roundabout you are doing it wrong! You're not going to get there any faster, the traffic will still be there for you to join.
