To go to urgent care (or am I a drama queen)?

Just wondering what other people would do in this situation...

Been ill for almost a month now. Started with one heck of a sore throat, which I croaked through for about a week, now a cold and suspected chest infection. Coughing up greenish mucus (sorry, TMI!), chest pain, dizziness, the works. Went to the doctor on Thursday but she didn't seem that concerned, I got some antibiotics and went on my way. I'm still not feeling much better though, antibiotics haven't worked at all. I've been too tired to get out of bed and my heart keeps racing erratically.

I ended up ringing 111 who told me I needed to see a GP immediately, but my surgery has absolutely no appointments and said there was nothing they could do.

Would you go to urgent care for this...? I don't want to waste the doctor's time but I'm also getting a bit anxious.

Have you finished the course of antibiotics?

BarryTheKestrel · 17/06/2019 12:01

Yes go. You've been told to see a doctor. You can't see your doctor so go somewhere you can see a doctor. If you don't have a walk in centre near you then urgent care would be the next step.

unfortunateevents · 17/06/2019 12:02

Can you call 111 again and tell them you can't get a doctor's appointment?

LoafofSellotape · 17/06/2019 12:02

Yes I would if the GP won't take you seriously.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/06/2019 12:02

Have you measured your pulse or taken your temperature?

Seeline · 17/06/2019 12:02

If 111 said see a GP immediately, then I think you should either go to a walk-in if you have one in your area, or if not urgent care.

MadisonMontgomery · 17/06/2019 12:04

111 always cover their backs by saying you need to see a GP within 2 hours btw.

SheldonSaysSo · 17/06/2019 12:04

Ring 111 back and state you can't get an appointment at your surgery. Normally they will make the surgery open one up for you. Failing that ring the surgery back and state 111 has told you that you have to see a GP within the next couple of hours. Its only lunchtime, the surgery must have some emergency slots available for patients later today.

S1naidSucks · 17/06/2019 12:05

I’m definitely someone who gets furious about time wasters, but I really think you need to get to a doctors, at the very least. I don’t like the sounds of that racing heart. Is there anyone that can take you, or get a taxi. Don’t try to drive because you’ll waste energy and time trying to find a parking space.

ittakes2 · 17/06/2019 12:05

Did you tell your GP 111 told you to ring them? If you didn't ring back as they might be motivated to squeeze you in. If not, then yes go to a clinic. Good luck.

fashiondevotee · 17/06/2019 12:10

My resting heart rate is 110 BPM. That's according to my Apple watch though, so could be wrong.

Have finished the course of antibiotics.

Will try ringing 111 again. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Isatis · 17/06/2019 12:15

Do you have a temperature?

usernamepinched · 17/06/2019 12:17

Pneumonia is a real possibility. I think you need to be seen today, whether that is GP or other facility. Ring 111 and tell them of the situation and get their advice.

GruciusMalfoy · 17/06/2019 12:18

I've had palpitations before when under the weather, apparently that's not unusual. But if you've finished the antibiotics, and you're still feeling very unwell, I think you need another appointment to be seen. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Mrsgandy · 17/06/2019 12:18

My resting heart right now on Apple Watch is 69 . Just to compare for you . I’m sitting down . Your not on antihistamines are you ? They make my heart race lots .

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 17/06/2019 12:23

I think you need A&E, personally. The racing heart is concerning and you were clearly prescribed inappropriate antibiotics to start with, so they need to get samples from you ASAP in order to discern what will work. This will happen most quickly if you are actually at the hospital.

Seriously, go to A&E; it is not be A but it may be an E.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 17/06/2019 12:23

*it is not an A but it may be an E.

Dammit!!

Justaboy · 17/06/2019 12:25

OP Phone your surgery and tell them you are not well and you called 111 and they said that you should see a GP rightaway. I very much expect they'll fit you in somewhere.

Don't delay, call them now!.

JB resting heart rate 58 BBM..

Tinyteatime · 17/06/2019 12:26

Yes go. The other thing I’d be concerned about with an infection that had got out of control is sepsis. I had it last year and didn’t even feel that I’ll before I went into septic shock. My pulse was crazy. Look for skin colour, temperature too.

Justaboy · 17/06/2019 12:27

ContessaIsOnADietDammit you might have a good point there she the OP may be having some sort of allergic reaction so if nn GP avaiable then A&E is justified I think!

BarbarianMum · 17/06/2019 12:28

If your GP surgery won't fit you in (shame on them) then yes, urgent care. You need to be seen.

fashiondevotee · 17/06/2019 12:31

GP surgery still says they can't fit me in, so I guess it's UC or wait until tomorrow to try again.

I'll give it until this evening and then see how I feel, I think there's a 24/7 UC centre not far from my house.

Partner is picking up a thermometer on his way home for those asking about temperature. He is worried about my BPM (I am in my 20s and quite fit usually).

SoupDragon · 17/06/2019 12:34

You've been ill for ages and are worse - do you really think waiting til this evening is going to make any positive difference?

Go now.

S1naidSucks · 17/06/2019 12:35

With all due respect, OP! Wise up and get your ass to urgent care, or preferably A&E. The symptoms mirror those of my DH and I was able to get an emergency gp appointment, where I was told to get him straight to hospital, one 10 mins away, and not to even wait for an ambulance as he was too ill. He talked away to me on the way to hospital, but nearly collapsed crossing the road. By the time we were seen, he was fighting for his life. He had sepsis that damaged his heart.

Get your ass to hospital.

PeoniesarePink · 17/06/2019 12:38

Not something for A & E unless you are seriously breathless and have chest pain that would indicate pneumonia. It's more than likely the anxiety that is making your heart race. You need a different course of antibiotics by the sound of it, so phone your GP and insist on an emergency appointment.
