To go to urgent care (or am I a drama queen)?

Just wondering what other people would do in this situation...

Been ill for almost a month now. Started with one heck of a sore throat, which I croaked through for about a week, now a cold and suspected chest infection. Coughing up greenish mucus (sorry, TMI!), chest pain, dizziness, the works. Went to the doctor on Thursday but she didn't seem that concerned, I got some antibiotics and went on my way. I'm still not feeling much better though, antibiotics haven't worked at all. I've been too tired to get out of bed and my heart keeps racing erratically.

I ended up ringing 111 who told me I needed to see a GP immediately, but my surgery has absolutely no appointments and said there was nothing they could do.

Would you go to urgent care for this...? I don't want to waste the doctor's time but I'm also getting a bit anxious.

Definitely go to urgent care or A&E, m.i.l had this and eventually got help but by then it was pneumonia which was well established. As she had delayed so long she ended up in ITU on life support and was in hospital for weeks so it can turn bad very quickly. Get help now.

A&E. You could have pneumonia and perhaps the antibiotics you have don't work because you're resistant to them

fashiondevotee · 17/06/2019 13:45

So I phoned up the GP surgery again and I don't know if they just got sick of me phoning or if I just got lucky with a cancellation, but I now have an appointment this evening! Thanks everyone. :)

Great. Good luck and I hope I’m proven wrong.

EleanorReally · 17/06/2019 13:47

oh good to hear

Wonkydonkey44 · 17/06/2019 13:50

Glad you’ve got an apt !

FreeTedHastings · 17/06/2019 13:59

Good luck with GP and hope they can help you. Let's hope you are just being a 'drama queen' Flowers.

Totur · 17/06/2019 14:00

Let us know how you get on later. Hope you get better soon. It's horrible being sick.

Bettercallsaul1 · 17/06/2019 14:12

I would go straight to A and E, OP. (I hope you're on your way now). With the exhaustion you mention ( not having the energy to get out of bed), the copious green phlegm from your chest, and very high resting heart rate, it is quite likely that you have pneumonia and require IV antibiotics asap. If you say you think you may have pneumonia at A and E, they won't make you wait long. It is likely that the antibiotics you're taking either came too late to stop the progression of your illness or were not the right type or strength. Get help now.

Bettercallsaul1 · 17/06/2019 14:14

Oh, just saw you have a GP appointment.

TantricTwist · 17/06/2019 14:20

If your GP prescribes antibiotics (a different type) and they don't do much after 2-3 days then go to A&E and get a proper check up ie chest x-ray, bloods.

You really shouldn't be this ill for this long.

MidgeRidge · 17/06/2019 14:33

Glad you've got an appointment. Make sure you tell them all your symptoms and worries. My husband had pneumonia, was given antibiotics which didn't work and he ended up in hospital for 10 days with fluid on the lung. No fault of the GP - it's just the way things happened. I just wanted to say make sure you give them the full picture.

managedmis · 17/06/2019 14:34

Good work

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 17/06/2019 14:37

Hmmm sounds like it could be pneumonia.

I'm glad you have an appt tonight.
Keep us updated.

3luckystars · 17/06/2019 19:55

I hope you feel better soon.

fashiondevotee · 17/06/2019 20:07

Update in case anyone was wondering... GP said it was probably mild pneumonia, sent me home with another lot of antibiotics and told me to wait it out. Hoping these ones work! Thanks for your help and concern everyone :)

Justaboy · 17/06/2019 20:22

Well lets hope he's right but if your still feeling no better by tomorrow I'd call in at A&E I htink you have every need to!. Espically if your bereathing deteriates.

Pneumonia isnt to be taken lightly!.

Bettercallsaul1 · 17/06/2019 21:01

Did the GP sound your chest, OP? Keep a close eye on your symptoms and, if in doubt, head for A and E. Oh, and drink lots of fluids - it will help thin the phlegm and make it easier to cough up.

PeoniesarePink · 17/06/2019 21:09

I'm glad you were seen OP, even though apparently I should be banned from posting Hmm

I had pneumonia myself several years ago. It took 4 courses of antibiotics, steroids and an inhaler to get rid of mine and I was unwell for around 8 weeks in total. The best advice I was given is that your body is working really hard to keep your oxygen levels up so rest rest and more rest is the best cure.

I really hope you feel better soon Flowers

carla1983 · 17/06/2019 22:31

Glad you have got some antibiotics and hope you feel better soon, OP!

Totur · 18/06/2019 00:25

That's a bit crap from the GP. 'Ye you've pneumonia - go home there now like a good girl'.

Hopefully you can fight it without having to rely on the useless NHS.

RosaWaiting · 18/06/2019 00:31

Op I read the start of this thinking, shit, pneumonia!

I hope you feel better ASAP.

AlunWynsKnee · 18/06/2019 00:34

To be fair Totur I had pneumonia after bronchitis and recovered perfectly well at home as did someone else I know. It's not always a hospital situation.

Totur · 18/06/2019 01:32

Please God OP can recover at home too.

RosaWaiting · 18/06/2019 01:47

Totur, the GP did give different antibiotics.

I recovered at home, have asthma so I was given a steroid inhaler anyway. OP if you feel wheezy, then ask for that, but hopefully you won’t need it.
