Hi do darks, whites and pastels, then wool and delicates separately.

Lots of white bedding, half white /half dark towels means it can always be filled.

3boysandabump · 18/06/2019 07:10

If I have a full load of both then I separate. If it's the dregs from the bottom of the basket they all get bunged in with a colour catcher

maggienolia · 18/06/2019 07:21

Whites, colours and darks all separated here, all done at 40.
Towels , tea towels and sheets go at 60.
Don't use colour catchers since one blocked up the machine.

TapasForTwo · 18/06/2019 07:31

The colour catcher I have is a reusable one from Lakeland. It is of a towelling material, and about the size of a large flannel.

EleanorReally · 18/06/2019 08:17

i wouldnt have considered jeans to be a culprit

Iwantacookie · 18/06/2019 08:42

I do lights, darks then single loads of I'm not sure which load it goes iñ

Dec2019mumtobe · 18/06/2019 08:43

I tend to do:

Whites on their own
Darks together
Anything red/pink/purple etc together

Dec2019mumtobe · 18/06/2019 08:44

Oh yeah and towels together on a 60 wash to kill germs

Dog bedding together for the same reason

Singlebutmarried · 18/06/2019 09:03

I separate whites. Then I do undies and pjs, jeans/trousers/bottoms, DCs clothes, tops/shirts, towels and bedding.

I find it easier to put away if I was by ‘type’

ErrolTheDragon · 18/06/2019 09:17

Really? Dark dyed denim can transfer colour when new even when it's not in the wash.

Surely the non-sorters wash dog bedding separately?

I don't find sorting washing takes long, but it does take a bit more space to store enough for multiple loads and extra laundry baskets. Some sorting is done at source - separate container for items needing non-bio detergent.

BlueBuilding · 18/06/2019 09:35

I wash everything separately.

Blacks/whites/pinks/yellows and light blue/greys.
Then separate hot washes for bedding and towels.

My sister throws everything in together. Me and my Mum judge her Grin

vampirethriller · 18/06/2019 09:54

Everything goes in together with colour catchers. There's only me and the baby so it's a long wait for a full load of different colours etc

ohcarriemathison · 18/06/2019 10:12

Yep sort everything.
Dark, white, colour.
I tend to do bedding and towels separately and do them on a hotter wash.
Genuinely don't think I could just bing it all in.
Wish I could tho as would certainly male life easier Grin

ohcarriemathison · 18/06/2019 10:13

"Bung" and "make"

ChippingInLowCarbing · 18/06/2019 10:21

Nope, everything goes in together even the whites. I've never had any issues with colours running, and the whites come out bright as new.. Tripe

You can tell the kids at school whose parents share this theory, they have the no longer white shirts.

As for the ouster who asked what whites people have... T-shirts, underwear, school shirts, socks, my tops/shirts. Bedding but that gets its own wash so the colour isn’t important really.

Whites
Blacks/dark blue
Bedding
Towels
T towels
Light colours
Med colours
Bright colours
Wool
Dusters/cleaning cloths

All washed with appropriate detergent & on the most appropriate cycle.

Nothing actually handwashed - if it can’t cope with the delicates cycle it doesn’t get to live here!

Sometimes if there are only a couple of things in one category they’ll reluctantly get put in with another load.

It takes seconds to sort, so not sorting on the flimsy excuse of ‘I don’t have time’ is ridiculous

I only iron kids school uniform shirts & t-towels/bedding though. Not most clothes so I’m a clean brilliantly white whites crumpled scruff 🤣I’m sure plenty will judge that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

WitsEnding · 18/06/2019 10:31

Whites go in a separate wash with bio washing powder (and occasionally tea towels etc that won't run).
Coloureds go all together with colour-safe washing powder and a dye catcher. I haven't always used dye catchers but I do find they stop colours looking 'muddy'.

Everything goes on 30 degree quick wash unless particularly filthy, extra spin for towels. Very delicate clothes are hand washed.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/06/2019 11:15

Dusters/cleaning cloths

If traditional yellow dusters still exist, don't put those in the wash with anything you care about (another long ago mistake... very nonfast dye).

Owlbert · 18/06/2019 12:45

I think I have issues!
I do:
Darks (black/light grey/dark blue & navy)
Denims either by themselves or in with darks
Whites (no patterns)
Whites with patterns (not stripey!)
White/navy white/black stripes or around 50/50 of each colour.
Red/dark pink/dark purple
Light pink/light purple
Bedding
Towels
Light blue/green/very light grey
Yellow/orange
Dark green/any blue that hasn't gone in with the darks
Nappies
Bibs/reusable baby wipes
Hand wash anything very patterned that I can't work out where it goes!
Most things just a 30 quick wash other than towels, nappies, bedding which go on a hotter longer wash.
I hate grey whites! My friend gave me back some baby clothes I had given her for my second (I didn't ask for them back! They were hers to do as she wished) and they were grey! Some washed ok after being steeped in milton and put on a hot wash, others went to the clothes bank.

IncrediblySadToo · 18/06/2019 14:35

No that’s why I said they go in a SEPARATE wash. And if there are enough if both there’s a ‘yellow dusters wash’ then a ‘cleaning cloths wash’ but if not they all go in together as the cleaning cloths are mostly darker anyway.

But thank you for assuming I’m a complete idiot 🙄

ErrolTheDragon · 18/06/2019 15:19

I wasn't assuming you were an idiot, that was merely an addition to warn anyone (like my younger self) who might not have realised that yellow dusters were particularly liable to run.

Cleaning cloths in a separate wash anyway just because the idea of putting them in with undies is rank either way you look at it!Grin

You could dye a whole sports teams white T-shirt’s yellow with one duster if you had a mind to 🤣

Absolutely they get no where near clothes/towels/bed linen etc. I really couldn’t do what some people do and throw cleaning cloths pants & t towels all in one wash 🤮

ncdforthistoday · 20/06/2019 20:23

I do lights and darks and only if I have something very brightly coloured that I'm worried about ruining the lights or being ruined by the darks I wash it separately.

Still really don't know what to think about black and white/navy and white Breton tops. I always stop and stare at the washing baskets for a few minutes wondering what to do with them.
