My 1930s house has dado rails in hallways and stairs. These are original to the property and removing them would mean having to replaster both hallways and stairwells so we kept them. We have paper above and a toning paint below, the actual rail is painted white like all our other woodwork. All rooms also had original icture rails but we removed them and replastered except in one room which is hardly used so we didn’t bother.

Davespecifico · 16/06/2019 16:16

Much better that than a feature wall.

ghostofharrenhal · 16/06/2019 16:18

That's lovely, LemonRedwood

I think cream and red can look good. I have my living room in F&B Rectory Red and Tallow. It's unfashionable I suppose, but everything dates after a while and I can't be bothered redecorating every three or four years!

@Mitzicoco Grin

ghostofharrenhal · 16/06/2019 16:20

Also, I know grey is uber-fashionable but I don't like it at all, it woudl really depress me to live with it.

ghostofharrenhal · 16/06/2019 16:20

Would!

TheNanny23 · 16/06/2019 16:23

We have installed something similar to this ourselves. It saves wallpaper from pets and small children!

Did a dado rail ever have an actual purpose? I'm not a fan and don't know what they're for. I do like a picture rail in a house of the right period though

mabelsgarden · 16/06/2019 16:25

it's the cream and red that is horrifying!

@Peterpiperpickedwrong

I agree. It will look like a pub.

And this is a problem because......................... ?????????? Grin

@Fucksandflowers

I LOVE net curtains mabel!! I have a gorgeous pair in my kitchen, they have peacocks on them. ❤️

Oooooh, PEACOCKS??? 🦚 🦚 🦚 I do love peacocks but I am not a fan of those net curtains sorry! Blush Each to their own eh? Smile

mabelsgarden · 16/06/2019 16:26

@HJWT I really do not like the white a grey look, and think it looks very bland and unfinished. I know a few people (under 30) who have a home that is almost entirely grey, white, and dark blue, and they look soooooo drab and cold. Doesn't help that they are into 'minimalism,' so their houses look like this.

Why in the name of all that's holy would you want to paint your walls cream and red? Depends on the house. A bit crap in a modern house, can be stunning in a large house which is Victorian or older.

Greyhoundsaregreyt · 16/06/2019 16:28

Those curtains!! And you’ve the brass neck to sneer at dado rails...
Taste is not something you’re over burdened with, op.

ghostofharrenhal · 16/06/2019 16:29

@mabelsgarden that is horrible. It would be especially horrible in a older house. It's just so devoid of any kind of personality.

dementedma · 16/06/2019 16:30

Cream and red sounds way better than grey and navy. But then, all of the rooms in our flat are painted bright colours so it would work for me.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/06/2019 16:30

Did a dado rail ever have an actual purpose? I'm not a fan and don't know what they're for. It protected the walls against scuffs, especially in the days when chairs were pushed back against the wall when not in use. Or if below the rail had a more durable finish, eg wood panelling below, wallpaper above.

OublietteBravo · 16/06/2019 16:32

My parents obviously haven’t got the hang of dado rails. They have red/cream striped wallpaper below the rail and magnolia paint above. It looks terribly dated. Especially in the hallway where they’ve installed cheap laminate flooring.

flowersinaugust · 16/06/2019 16:41

I'm 24 and I have a dado rail with cream and red in the dining room Confused
I've always thought it looked great but now I'm worried that my taste is not as good as I thought!

Mitzicoco · 16/06/2019 16:47

*@ghostofharrenhal *

actually quite like F&B......:)

merrymouse · 16/06/2019 16:48

You'll be eating your words when "end century modern" comes in.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/06/2019 16:53

In the UK I always lived in older houses. Quite often they'd had the period features removed in some, but not all, rooms. I used to put them back.
The last house I owned though, the ceilings were too low for picture rails, so I did put a dado rail in the dining room - it worked well as there was a hand rail going up the stairs as well, so it all fit together quite well. My main driver for putting the dado rail up, though, was that the dining room wall needed a new damp course to be done, and so they destroyed the paper up to about 2 foot high. Rather than repaper the whole wall in the anaglypta that was there (which would actually have meant the whole room), I decided to put up a dado rail and just paper under it with plain paper. Could get away with that!

Generally I think it's better to have the darker colour under the dado rail. But a pale-mid blue below and cream above should work ok.

Red and cream, especially a darker cream, is very "pub decor" colours! Grin

Deckchairandsunshine · 16/06/2019 16:59

How about a nice red vertical stripe velvet wallpaper under the dado rail. Then a similar themed pattern on the top.
Some nice pictures on the top half, and you will need to install some picture lights above them to complement the look.

ghostofharrenhal · 16/06/2019 17:18

Red and cream, especially a darker cream, is very "pub decor" colours!

Maybe that's why I like it so much! Wine

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/06/2019 17:20

Grin - that's what I said with my own colour choices (also "pub décor") - no wonder I felt so at home with them!

ghostofharrenhal · 16/06/2019 17:28

See, I think this sort of decor is nice, but I guess it is old fashioned.

PickAChew · 16/06/2019 17:35

My parents have red and cream in their hallway, but it's a mid 19th century house, so suits it. It's a very soft, pinky red. They also have a proper parquet floor, in little squares.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/06/2019 17:43

My childhood home had a dado rail in hall and stairs. It was Edwardian and so that was an original feature along with the picture rails. The ceilings were high so it worked.
