AIBU-I don't know! Dog owner rude to my child

I went for a walk yesterday with DD and a big barky dog came up to her and jumped up on her. She was very scared and screamed so I had to pick her up. I told her not to worry and that the dog was just saying hello. But she said to me,' Mummy I don't like that dog.' The dog owner looked my daughter in the eye and said,' well I don't like children,'
Should I have said something? I just kept waling but am seething now.

YADNBU
Dog was out of control
and owner was BVU to be rude instead of grabbing her dog, apologising abjectly and putting the animal on a short lead

Mitzicoco · 16/06/2019 13:05

In the(adapted) words of Cher(turn back time):
If I could turn back time
I'd say fuck off to you
And you'd hate me
But you'd have to walk on to.

Groan.

Some dog owners are very arrogant and ignorant about the correct way to behave. (I am a dog owner myself). In your case it's really bad because the dog frightened a child with its behaviour.
I wouldn't care what the person said, as it was probably a failed attempt at humour, but you could certainly have pointed out that the dog was out of control.

Babyroobs · 16/06/2019 13:11

The owner was rude and if the dog was prone to jumping up at small children it should be on a lead. If that had been my dog that jumped up at a small child I'd have been apologising profusely.

crazyasafox · 16/06/2019 13:11

@Mitzicoco

What a vile bastard.

YANBU. I would have said 'well I doubt most children like YOU, you obnoxious twat.'

Save that for next time!

Hope your bairn is OK. Smile

crazyasafox · 16/06/2019 13:13

Agree with the pps who are saying SOME dog owners are arrogant, obnoxious, entitled-to twots, who think their mutts can do no wrong. (Not all, but some.)

Jacksmadre · 16/06/2019 13:14

I’d be fuming. The dog owner was very rude

JassyRadlett · 16/06/2019 13:15

‘The difference being my child didn’t run up and jump on you. Good training makes all the difference, don’t you think? Or perhaps you didn’t have the benefit....’

What an utter twat. We’re still only getting my eldest over his fear of dogs after being jumped on and barked at as a toddler. Five bloody years later.

MenuPlant · 16/06/2019 13:22

'If the dog owner doesn't like children, that's fair enough - I'm not sure why that part of what happened should bother you'

The dog jumping on the child was a thing that was not great, and there should have been an apology.

To look a little child in the eye after that and say 'I don't like children' says that

She doesn't care that the child was knocked
She doesn't care that the child was scared
She wouldn't stop it happening again
She might be happy if it did, or for child to be hurt

Other dog owners may feel this way

She's just a little kid for an adult to look her in the eye and say that is all kinds of bad.

JonSnowsFurCoat · 16/06/2019 13:23

I love animals. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats. I also have 3 young dc. I would never let my dogs run up and jump on anyone, especially not a child. They have been trained from the beginning not to jump up as they're very big (Rottweilers) and could accidentally hurt someone. If I thought they were likely to do that, I’d keep them on a lead, like any good owner would.

Also, making comments like that to a child. Absolutely pathetic.

StoppinBy · 16/06/2019 13:23

@birdrib .... the problem was, the dog was out of control and causing the child to be afraid.... the child was right beside it's parent and had every right to feel safe.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/06/2019 13:24

DesMartinsPetCat - You sound absolutely delightful.

LadyRannaldini · 16/06/2019 13:31

This happened years ago to us, we had our granddaughter in her buggy on a crowded pavement and this huge dog come slobbering over her and she started to scream. I make no apologies for saying that I hit it, hard, to get it to stop and it's owner was irate, 'Why the f... are you hitting my f...... dog, you b........' My response 'Because you weren't close enough, moron!'

redcarbluecar · 16/06/2019 13:37

If the dog owner is prepared to be as rude as that, you’d probably have ended up in an argument and got more upset, so not a bad strategy to just ignore it.

Dog owner was out of order on all counts, and may have caused your child to now have a fear of dogs.

Ghanagirl · 16/06/2019 13:41

@Birdrib
Really so it’s fine to be rude at a small child whose been jumped on your out of control dog🤷🏽‍♀️

DesMartinsPetCat · 16/06/2019 13:41

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel Thanks 😘

MenuPlant · 16/06/2019 13:44

I think someone looking you in the eye and saying that is past rude and into intimidating. Esp to a small child. And extra esp to a small child who has just been knocked over by their dog.

Deuxcaggages · 16/06/2019 13:46

What an awful person. Anyone that can't understand what's wrong with looking a visibly upset child in the eye and telling them they don't like children - wtf! seriously. How old are you 10 ?

redspider1 · 16/06/2019 13:54

Dog owner was horrid. I am a dog owner. My dog doesn't jump at people but if she did i would apologise profusely. I would hate that your child was scared. I used to fear dogs terribly as a child.

Birdrib · 16/06/2019 13:55

Yeah

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 16/06/2019 13:56

I would have passive aggressively started explaining to my dc how it's not the dogs fault it has been poorly trained, it's that guys and pointed at him. Then gone on to remind her of all the well behaved dogs that had passed nicely.

Teddybear45 · 16/06/2019 13:57

I would have taken a photo of the dog and owner and taken it to the police station to report an out of control dog and an attempted attack.

redspider1 · 16/06/2019 13:59

I was out walking my quite small dog one day. Usually see the same pleasant dog owners on my walks. This time a large dog bounded up to me, I was a little anxious due to a bit of residual childhood fear but braved it out but the dog leapt at me, muddy paws on my shoulders. I stood still and the dog ran off. The dog owner walked past saying nothing. when I pulled her up on this she told me to fuck off!

Tanith · 16/06/2019 14:00

"And I don't like owners who can't control their dogs!"
or
"You need a muzzle" and let her work it out.

redspider1 · 16/06/2019 14:00

This happens rarely, most owners would call the dog away and apologise.
