I have a complicated prescription - high astigmatism, minus 8 in both eyes and I need varifocals. I've worn varifocals from Boots without issue for 2.5 years

Anyway went to specsavers this time. Mainly because I get two pairs for price of one. Picked up new pairs on Thursday and I'm struggling with them. Everything is blurry, especially looking down. I wasn't sure when I tried them on in the shop - was advised to 'start afresh' next morning with them and they made various adjustments but I'm not particularly happy or convinced - my vision was better in my old varifocals. My prescription has only changed very slightly anyway

So my question. These were £400. Will they refund them because I'm just not happy with my vision in them? In 30 odd years of wearing glasses, I've never returned a pair before!

I still have them on though as I know to take a little while to try and get your eyes and brain to adjust but this is just silly

If you can't see properly they haven't provided a proper service.
They'll probably offer you a re-test before a refund though.

AlpacaP1cnic · 16/06/2019 10:21

Optician said he could make my left eye vision a little sharper. Umm this has categorically not happened.

Should have just stuck with my old ones. Only changed them because I wear them daily of course and always like to update every few years

I used to work in an opticians. If someone had this problem we would do a retest and order new lenses free of charge if necessary. Most reputable opticians will def work with you. You'll need to give them s chance to rectify the problem first though

EBearhug · 16/06/2019 10:25

Yes, go back. I expect they will want to see if they can adjust anything, but if you can't see properly and you've given them a fair chance, then they need changing.

zxcv123 · 16/06/2019 10:26

I've taken glasses back to Specsavers for exactly this reason and they were absolutely fine about it. Re-tested my eyes and made new lenses to go in the frames. No extra charge and they were fine second time round.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 16/06/2019 10:26

I had some glasses once that seemed worse than the old ones that were replaced
I went back and the optician said they had ‘toned them down’ so they weren’t as strong, as they thought I wouldnt manage with the full strength!
Well what’s the point of that?! I had them redone to the full prescription and they were fine
You should definitely go back and explain

Missillusioned · 16/06/2019 10:27

Yes you can return them. Sometimes the measurements aren't quite right and this happens. They should be able to correct it

theITgirl · 16/06/2019 10:28

I had a similar problem with my varifocals from specsavers and the remade my glasses (both pairs) with no problem. What had happened was that the measurement of my line of sight was within the frame was off. So they measured again and sent the frames back for new lenses.
I realised when I noticed that if I tilted my head down and then looked up, I could see clearly again. They were very good with me, so good luck getting this sorted.

WrongKindOfFace · 16/06/2019 10:28

Definitely go back. Both oh and I have had issues where the lenses weren’t right - completely wrong prescription in one case, and being off centre in another - and they were very apologetic and rectified them.

AlpacaP1cnic · 16/06/2019 10:29

Excellent thank you. I'm going to pop in tomorrow. I know it's quite hard for them to get the prescription spot on due to it being quite high but Boots managed it OK. It's mainly when I look down - so looking through the bottom third of the lens. Pretty blurry, I need to re focus

It's so annoying

OP posts:
AlpacaP1cnic · 16/06/2019 10:31

When I tried on the first pair of glasses, they were loose. They'd literally fall off my face. They were loathe to adjust the fitting too much though because they would worried the lens would either fall out due to its thickness (I have to have them thinned - more expense!) or it would distort them. Yet they suggested these frames to me

Ahh it's annoying when your vision isn't spot on

Eminybob · 16/06/2019 10:31

They have a 90 day return policy I think.

AnyMinuteNow · 16/06/2019 10:32

Sounds like a word to the wise wrt specsavers! The letting you go when they absolutely don't work for you! You couldn't see through them so why on earth did they not take them straight back, really bizarre.

Your eyes shouldn't have any adjusting to do to a new prescription.

Up to you. Either give them another chance to rectify it or ask for a refund and go back to where you were happy perhaps?

Sicario · 16/06/2019 10:35

I've had the same issue with a pair from specsavers. Can't see a bloody thing.

StoorieHoose · 16/06/2019 10:35

I went back to specsavers and the third time I tried my varifocals on they were ok but not great and I was sick to death of the faff. 2 years later I went to an independent opticians and the difference in the glasses was instant. I stopped scrunching my face up to see anything and they got the prescription and vision zones spot on

youvegottobekidding · 16/06/2019 10:35

They are usually quite good with things like this ime I have done this in the past and they rectified it for me. I've just had a recent eye test & required new glasses, however these new glasses are quite uncomfortable & are forever slipping down my nose so I'm going to gooing to go back next week, hopefully they'll sort something out, varifocals are not cheap!

Riv · 16/06/2019 10:38

Yes, I have returned varifocals to spec savers several times. They have never managed to get mine right first time! (And like several posters I have found they frequently seem to alter the prescription “just a bit to make them better for you “ ??)
Don’t use them anymore because of the hassle. I prefer to make do with one pair I can see through from a different optician 🙄

OKBobble · 16/06/2019 10:39

Yes - in consumer law terns they are not fit for their purpose.

BringOnTheScience · 16/06/2019 10:39

My most recent varis (Vision Express) had to be adjusted twice then eventually remade. They'd cocked up the level & distance measurements at some point, so one eye had the different zones too high. By way of compensation I was upgraded to their ultra-hyper-extra-super-duper lenses.

Definitely go back and get them altered.

AlpacaP1cnic · 16/06/2019 10:39

@AnyMinuteNow yeah I know. I wasn't convinced when I first put them on. Just so tricky with a high prescription

OP posts:
AlpacaP1cnic · 16/06/2019 10:41

I'll pop in tomorrow and see what they can do to sort it out. I just want to put them on and bloody well see properly

Have had a massive increase in floaters in my eyes too - but that's something that will recede if I ignore

OP posts:
AnyMinuteNow · 16/06/2019 11:00

You couldnt see, theres nothing at all convincing about that!

DontCallMeShitley · 16/06/2019 11:00

I had this with another optician. Couldn't see a thing. Went back and they adjusted them, still couldn't see. They also 'couldn't find my records' when I went back one more time.

On that basis I sent their head office/customer services a recorded delivery letter and received a refund. I then took the glasses to a competent optician and had them re-done.

I have heard that Specsavers give you a prescription that is closest to the one you need, as they use what they have available, not sure how true that is but I know plenty of people that won't use them. You have to ask why they keep delivering money off vouchers to houses.... none of the others do that.

PettyContractor · 16/06/2019 11:03

I had an eye test in Boots and ordered cheap glasses of the internet. When they came I felt they weren't right. Went back to Boots with glasses, they checked glass and retested my eyes. Eventually worked out that they had originally written my prescription down wrong when copying it off the computer screen. Fixed my glasses at their own expense.
