to think you dress up to watch Rocky Horror?

I've seen Rocky Horror twice by amature groups and both times the whole audience dressed the part (admittedly one was a student performance so any excuse to dress up!!) I just assumed that is the done thing when seeing this show?

I'm going with some friends to see the official performance of it and when i mentioned dressing up the friends were shocked and had never considered doing that (they haven't seen it before)

So, over to the MN vote - do you dress up for rocky horror or not?!

Some do, some don't. If they haven't seen it before they probably don't realise that at least 50% of the audience will be dressed up and that people will shout out and heckle during the performance.
Have they seen the film? Do they know what they're in for!?

HufflepuffHarpy · 16/06/2019 07:43

They are aware of the concept but haven't seen the film. know a few of the songs (timewarp)

I noticed Rocky horror was at the Alexandra a few weeks ago and as I drove past I’d say at least 80% of the people queued outside were in costume. Have a great time!

HufflepuffHarpy · 16/06/2019 07:44

i can't wait! (and secretly looking forward to getting back to my gothic teenage roots!!)

They had me doubting myself as i've not seen the official production before, just smaller ones and thought maybe its not the done thing for the proper version!!

Dressing up is definitely a must!

SegregateMumBev · 16/06/2019 07:45

Lots of people will, but not everyone.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 16/06/2019 07:46

Dressing up is a big part of the fun. There will be a few people who aren’t dressed up.

MeOldBamboo · 16/06/2019 07:47

At the very least wear a white coat!!!

HufflepuffHarpy · 16/06/2019 07:48

i'm not asking them to go totally overboard - i'm not talking turning up in suspenders, just a nod to the theme really. they really made me think i was going mad! maybe i picked the wrong people to go with!!

I've been to the stage show 20+ times, am a huge fan Grin
In my experience 70% of the audience are dressed up and if it's a weekend performance I would say 80-90%
Have a great time, I saw this run back in January and it was amazing

BeanBag7 · 16/06/2019 07:51

It's definitely done at the official production. If they dont want to go full-on costume they could just have an accessory e.g. white coat, leather jacket or pink feather boa. All part of the fun!

I once saw a showing in a large theater and the row behind us was an older couple in typical smart theater wear (shirt and tie etc.) They looked very out of place and halfway through I heard them ask another guest "is it always like this?". They obviously didn't know that Rocky Horror isn't your standard theater performance! (They didn't look impressed at all and didn't stand for the ovation 😂)

Milicentbystander72 · 16/06/2019 07:51

I went with a group of work mates about 15 years ago. We all dressed up, and I'm talking suspenders etc, even the men. There were about 8 of us. We were not the only ones by far. I'd say about 60% of the audience dressed up.

Also, there are specific points to heckle. Take a water pistol and newspaper and confetti or rice to throw (maybe not rice as it might be considered dangerous now).

Have fun!

steff13 · 16/06/2019 07:52

It's not that difficult to dress as Janet.

WeeDangerousSpike · 16/06/2019 07:52

I went earlier this year. We dressed up, as did 3/4 of the audience. Some didn't - and that's fine (although I think I would have felt uncomfortable not dressed up tbh).

I think you do need to pre-warn them though that the audience isn't going to be just half heartedly dressed up!

They might need a bit of advance warning that there will be men in just pants, men in corsets and womens knickers, women in just underwear. Potentially they could be sat next to a man spreading bloke in not a lot!

I hope you enjoy it, it was absolutely excellent!

Sleepyquest · 16/06/2019 07:52

They're in for a shock!

MotherTime3 · 16/06/2019 07:54

I went years ago when it was touring. I’d seen bits of the film, but had no idea about the dresssy up when I agreed to go. So glad I went along with it though, it was amazing. Then there’s the rice (is it rice) And they’re all the shouting out. Please encourage them, it’s definately worth feeling silly when you leave the house, because you fit right in once you’re there.

notacooldad · 16/06/2019 07:54

At the very least wear a white coat
No PJs!!!!🤣🤣

Sirzy · 16/06/2019 07:56

I don’t enjoy dressing up so when I go to see it don’t dress up.

Others love dressing up.

As long as your happy does it matter what others do?

Nquartz · 16/06/2019 07:56

I saw the official show & loads of the audience were dressed up. I was with my mum & we didn't though!

Divebar · 16/06/2019 07:57

For some reason I have a vision of Harold and Hilda from Ever Decreasing Circles turning up in their matching tank tops and cagoules.
I haven’t seen the RHS for years but when I did most people were dressed up I seem to think.

DavidBowiesBulge · 16/06/2019 07:58

Last time I went as Janet- big white bra, white slip, and lab coat. I was cold! This year I'm going as Eddie. My two brothers go in the full stockings and suspenders get-up and always get asked to take photos with people. It's great fun.

Dressing up is a must.

Whackaguacamole · 16/06/2019 08:02

Yes! So much fun to dress up, most people will.
I channelld Magenta when I went, easy with a black dress, apron and fishnets

HufflepuffHarpy · 16/06/2019 08:05

i will show them this thread, hopefully it will convince them! i am wearing black but i have a sequin top hat and bow tie, lace gloves and big gothic jewellery to go with it. and purple lipstick of course!!

I will have to be a bit more forceful about warning them what this will be like!!

EXCITED!!

DD is only 21 and has been three times, her and her BFF dress up as someone different every time, most of the audience are older than them and most dress up round here. They also take the essential accessories, the newspaper, the water pistol etc.

MrsGrindah · 16/06/2019 08:06

I went fully dressed up as were most of the audience. But I was sat next to a young couple I think on a first date. They were not dressed up and just sat there Shock She turned to him at one point and said “ I thought this was a musical! “
