I've seen Rocky Horror twice by amature groups and both times the whole audience dressed the part (admittedly one was a student performance so any excuse to dress up!!) I just assumed that is the done thing when seeing this show?

I'm going with some friends to see the official performance of it and when i mentioned dressing up the friends were shocked and had never considered doing that (they haven't seen it before)

So, over to the MN vote - do you dress up for rocky horror or not?!

Personally I’d like to know how these amateur groups got permission to perform it! The show has never ever been licensed for performance by amateurs.

I went about 16 years ago when it was in Manchester I dressed up as did most of the audience .

I went with friends when I was 17 or 18 and knew nothing about it although had seen the film. I was shocked, shocked I tell you, by the rude people in the audience who kept interrupting the poor actors. I didn’t realise there was a “script” until later!

Most people were dressed up last time it came here, many went seriously to town, we are talking full Frank 'n' Furter suspenders on the number 44 bus! Many including me just channelled their inner goth forgotten since university, others arrived in lab coats including all of my local dentist practice who had a works outing ... fun night out

HufflepuffHarpy · 16/06/2019 08:17

peach at the risk of it being outing, the shows i saw were performed by the students of the university where Richard O'Brien went - they have exclusive rights to perform whenever they want.

I’ve seen it a few times and always dressed up.
Once, driving home, I had to get petrol.

The guy at the petrol station asked me if I’d just been to see Rocky Horror. I said ‘no’

His face was a picture Grin

Oh Im jealous! I’ve love Rocky Horror! Last time I saw it years ago Biggins was the narrator I think. At least 60% of the audience dressed up, I just had a nod to it in fishnets.

Really? I’ve never heard this - didn’t even know Richard O’Brien went to university?

YouKidsKeepMeYoung · 16/06/2019 08:42

Wikipedia says he lived in New Zealand from age 10 - 22 and then went into acting. Not sure of he studied in the UK but looks unlikely.

HufflepuffHarpy · 16/06/2019 08:57

fine, i will be completely outing. he attended a creative arts college, which has since been taken over by a uk uni. I know because i went there.

in fairness, i have no idea if the rights still exist as the college campus he attended has since been shut down and sold off since i went there. i dont know if the rights only applied while the college stayed opperational or if the rights transfered to the uni when they bought the college. It was 15+ years ago that i was there.

My mum (50) and her friends go yearly, they always dress up. But it is in Brighton and the majority of people dress up. If you can ever see it in Brighton, do, it has an amazing atmosphere! They go out afterwards and have the best night.
