to buy La Mer?

I was given a free sample recently and fell in love. I googled it and knew it would be expensive, but wow. It's mega money! I can afford it (just) but don't know if it's worth it. I mean how good can a skin cream really be?

Does anyone use it? Is it really amazing?

I use a muslin cloth with hot water in the shower to cleanse and remove make-up. No product required and skin glows after. I then use Ordinary retinol 5% in squalene overnight followed by Aldi Lacura q10 spf 20 moisturiser in the day. Skin has never looked so good and I'm 48!

Atrixo gabs cream is excellent on my face.

BusterGonad · 15/06/2019 18:07

@Nicknacky I honk you're find it's the other way around, the Mexico/American one is waxy the German/uk one is creamy and like La Mer.

BikeRunSki · 15/06/2019 18:08

“Hand cream” not “gabs” cream.

BusterGonad · 15/06/2019 18:08

Honk!!!!! Think!

Beheuehyu · 15/06/2019 18:08

It depends on your reason for using (and you’re sounds about right). Being super honest I used to be la mer and also la prairie but ... after a while I decided that the money would be better spent better on “treatments” (yes I do include Botox in that). But tbf my skin itself is ok, it was more wrinkles and bags etc that bothered eme

BusterGonad · 15/06/2019 18:09

Your not you're! My phone has gone effing crazy and it keeps freezing etc

MammaSchwifty · 15/06/2019 18:10

Melt shea butter and sweet almond oil, say 50:50, or 70:30 by weight and let it set. Super thick, greasy and nourishing, and only two ingredients.

If you need it extra thick and coating, add a 30ml tablespoon of beeswax pellets per 150-200g of butter/oil mix.

Nicknacky · 15/06/2019 18:10

Buster I’m fairly sure it’s not, but I will look for the articles I had read. I looked into it when I was in the US as I was doing to buy La Mer when I was there and found the articles.

Try the Eucerin range. Look on Boots website. They have a wide range - including those containing hyaluronic acid which is great as a serum before moisturiser. Boots online often have promotions which is when I've bought before.

lunar1 · 15/06/2019 18:24

I use It, I get through about one pot a year. I've tried everything else anyone has ever suggested. One pot of La Mer a year is far cheaper than the wasteland of other products I've tried and can't use. I also use their tinted moisturiser.

Cmagic7 · 15/06/2019 18:27

I used to have skin like you - and I found that what really changed it was starting to use retinol.

BusterGonad · 15/06/2019 18:28

@Nicknacky my sincere apologies, you are right, I honestly thought from the Daily Mail experiment that the uk one was the dupe! Blush

newfaces · 15/06/2019 19:05

Thanks everyone. Would love to use retinol but I'm dubious whilst breast feeding!

My DSIL gifted me some and I will admit, it felt great on my skin. I stopped short of buying more when I found out it is tested on animals unfortunately.

Twiggywinkle13 · 15/06/2019 19:24

Charlotte Tilbury dream cream also has that consistency. I too have horrendously dry skin. I would have kept using the dream cream if I hadn’t had to use so much at a time. I use Avene, it’s the dream and incidentally much cheaper!

Over rated

I've actually read recently the Nivea Creme blue tub - which I used to use and have recently gone back to and love it - is essentially the same formulation as La Mer, but 2.50 for a massive pot.

loubieloulou · 15/06/2019 20:05

Op you need to try this ..... it's super hydrating, it's transformed dry skin on my face : )

Garnier has a group of products called 'Skin Active' and there is one called 'Botanical Balm Soothing Moisturiser' in a fairly large pot.

You can use it as day or night cream or as a mask.

There used to be a 'honey' variety, which has vanished, but I just got the 'rose water' version half price in Sainsbury's.

I'd give it 5 stars for my sensitive dry skin, but unfortunately it is a little bit scented, which is a shame. Claims on the pot to have 96% natural ingredients, fwiw.

Good old MN. OP. Asks about a particular brand, followed by competitive thrift.
OP. Should I splurge and treat myself?
MN. I just walk around picking up dog shit and smear it on my face, I'm 87 and look 12.

WillyWielderandtheChocolateFac · 15/06/2019 21:17

I'll put another vote behind Skin Food - it's SO thick and works wonders for dry skin.

JoJoSM2 · 15/06/2019 21:26

I used to fork out lots on La Mer and top of the range Chanel but it isn't worth it. I found that the sweet spot for skincare are La Roche Posay, Eucerin and Avene. If your skin gets dry, then get eating your omega 3 and monounsaturated fats.

babyno5 · 15/06/2019 21:30

I'm a massive fan of Beaty Pie. I love the overnight miracle oil especially
