Leaving my dog in the car

chargedup77 · 13/06/2019 17:09

Evening all,
Would I be unreasonable to leave my dog in the car outside on my drive for an hour or 2 whilst I have visitors? It's my grandchild and gc parents aren't keen on gc being around the dog ( dog has been known to snap so fair enough ) can't put her in another room as she escapes or just barks loud, would this be okay or cruel?

Do you want to come back to a dead dog?
Never ever leave a dog in a car

Bibijayne · 13/06/2019 17:11

Can you send the dog out with a dog walker?

So cruel, and dangerous for the poor dog. Cars get so hot.

boobirdblue · 13/06/2019 17:11

Will she not bark in the car? Can't you put her in an upstairs room?

PanteneProV · 13/06/2019 17:11

Are you for real? Of course you can’t. It would be cruel and dangerous. If you can’t keep her shut in a different room then either pay someone to take her for a walk, or meet your guests somewhere other than your home.

CrumbsCrumbsEverywhere · 13/06/2019 17:12

Cruel I think. Half an hour max I'd say was acceptable, with windows open obviously. Can nobody have her for a couple hours?

What about putting the dog in the garden?

Wildorchidz · 13/06/2019 17:12

Keep the car in the shade and make sure windows are open enough to allow air in.

Twooter · 13/06/2019 17:12

Depends on the type of day. Overcast and raining - ok. Sunny , definitely not.

Doesthiscountasausername · 13/06/2019 17:13

IS there someone who can have the dog for a few hours? Do you have a garden to put her in? Its never safe to leave dogs in cars for a prolonged period

chargedup77 · 13/06/2019 17:13

No if she's in the garden she'll just bark as she can see the visitors she loves the car so thought it would be okay!!

VVVVU ,if you love your dog don't do it !

mimibunz · 13/06/2019 17:15

It’s cru. It’s your dogs house ffs.

Letsnotargue · 13/06/2019 17:15

It depends on so many things. My dog loved the car and happily slept in it if I was working in the garden, when we went camping etc as he much preferred it to the tent. If your dog is less keen on the car it would be less fair on them, if it’s more a ‘here’s somewhere we can put you out of the way’. Would the dog bark in the car? Is that better than them doing it in the house? Is there not a way to entertain the dog in a room for a couple of hours - really long walk so they are tired and a big chew or a sniffle mat or something.

It also depends massively on the weather. If it’s a day like today then your dog would be fine temperature wise, but any kind of sun can make the car unbearably hot.

It doesn’t sound like a sustainable solution that’s fair to your dog to be honest.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 13/06/2019 17:15

No. It's not fair, and you'll probably end up reported to the police and on your local Facebook page.

(Not that the police are likely to do much; but that's not the point).

mimibunz · 13/06/2019 17:15

Or cruel even

LakieLady · 13/06/2019 17:17

Yes, almost certainly. Even on quite cool days, cars get very hot if they're in sunlight. And some dogs would be very pissed off if there were guests in the house and trash the car in their frustration: my friend's lurcher shredded the back seat of their car when she was left in it because they had a visitor who didn't like dogs and a woman we met had her seatbelts chewed to shreds by her young Rhodesian ridgeback in similar circumstances (they cost £700 to fix!).

Far better to get a dog gate (or baby gate if it's a small dog) and shut the dog in the kitchen imo.

WatcherOfTheNight · 13/06/2019 17:18

For dogs ,they die of heatstroke very quickly and it is a very painful way to die .
It's really not advisable even if it's in the shade ,with a window open & with access to water .

Stroller15 · 13/06/2019 17:18

OP I work with vets, they leave their dogs in the car on overcast, cool days with the windows slightly open. No dogs died and no one telling them yabvvvvu. I'd do it rather than have the poor dog snap at the poor DC.

If it's a cold rainy day then ok for a couple of hours but be very careful if there's any sun or even light cloud as cars can heat up really fast even with windows open.
Probably best to shade all the windows - cover with old blankets/curtains

maddy68 · 13/06/2019 17:19

If you really don't want the dog around them lock it in a bedroom. FFS don't leave it in car!

RabbityMcRabbit · 13/06/2019 17:20

Can't believe you even have to ask OP, and I'm not even a dog person...
