I was complained by two ladies in swimming pool

I am a regular swimmer. Got complained by two ladies who swim slowly and chatting side by side. The pool was busy and I had to occasionally swim between them. They asked the staff to talk to me saying they were there before me and I should move over in stead swim in between them. It was only a 20 meter public swim but they two occupied about two lane and swim very slowly. Be frank, I hate people swim and chat. When I swim freestyle I try to look but there might be one or two seconds that I was close to them but they have their heads up, insist swim side by side. I ask the staff, should he talk to them not blocking the whole two lanes? Annoyed! I probably need to get up at six to do the lane swim instead.

Pick the right lane and time for your type of swimming.
Suggest they have lanes and identify which lane is for loops, back and forth, slow medium and fast.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 13/06/2019 17:07

We’re you deliberately swimming between them OP because swimming and chatting annoys you?

PCohle · 13/06/2019 17:08

I think if you are swimming during a public session rather than a lane swimming session then unfortunately you do need to put up with this.

Havenly · 13/06/2019 17:08

I think you need to discuss with the duty manager. The pool timetable and session descriptions should be clear about what each session type is.
My local council pool has some sessions with a "lane swimming environment" but they only rope off one lane out of 4. So there are chatters and faster swimmers but they are separated. Better than nothing.
I also swim at a uni pool open to the public. Most of their sessions are lane swimming- all 6 lanes roped off and signs designating fast slow and medium lanes- and the lifeguards are active in making sure people go in the appropriate lane. It works really well- everyone knows what the expectations are.

We'd more info, lane swimming or not?

boobirdblue · 13/06/2019 17:10

*need

Itellpeopletogoogleit · 13/06/2019 17:12

Bluerussian, all that achieves is letting everyone know you can't decipher very simple information. I suggest you work on your passive aggression.

thefinn · 13/06/2019 17:12

Don't know the UK etiquette so well.. the one I regularly go to has lanes for different speeds, general, fast and the rest for professionals. That they were there first should have nothing to do with it at all. I think they were a bit rude about it although people swimming slowly and chatting is very common

Mustbetimeforachange · 13/06/2019 17:15

I'm sure she's said it wasn't lane swimming.

boobirdblue · 13/06/2019 17:17

@Mustbetimeforachange yes maybe the last line does confirm that, I was confused about OP
saying they blocked two lanes fist.

JaceLancs · 13/06/2019 17:18

I don’t swim and chat - but don’t swim very fast - it’s still a great form of exercise at 55 and I can swim for a very long time
Current gym pool I use does not have zones for lane swimmers or speed etc and I get tired of people (usually men) powering their way into me whilst not looking where they are going
Why should I be constantly forced to swim round them?

HiItsClemFandango · 13/06/2019 17:20

@Bluerussian the OP hates when people swim and chat and someone made a complaint about her.

Was that so hard to grasp?

Jinglejanglefish · 13/06/2019 17:21

Bluerussian

Really? You can't figure it out? I would be embarrassed if I couldn't comprehend what OP meant.

YANBU op, they shouldn't be swimming so slowly and blocking others, particularly if they were in lanes.

user1472754004 · 13/06/2019 17:21

I didn’t swim between them deliberately. I think just one or two times that I didn’t have a choice. I’ve decided to go to a private swimming pool in the future. More expensive but easier . They complained that they were there since 9am and I went in at 9:15..... ridiculous. The pool staff didn’t think about it and passed the message to me. Lack of training. Two ladies occupied 1/4 of the pool... no words... Don’t want to encounter these people any more.

Mitzimaybe · 13/06/2019 17:22

Totally unclear. Was it lane swimming with the floaty ropes between lanes, and they were in a lane each, both going slowly and chatting? In which case they WBU and YANBU.

If there were no marked lanes then YABU.

Normally for lane swimming the lanes are graduated from slow to fast. Was that not the case?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/06/2019 17:22

Being 'there first' doesn't give them carte blanche to take up so much room that another swimmer can find space between them.

THIS

I'm a slow swimmer myself, and TBH am terrified of the "barracudas" who whoosh past me - but I wouldn't take this much room up when with friends (apart from anything else I need all my air for staying alive).

user1472754004 · 13/06/2019 17:25

It is not lane swim. So I guess they have more right to chat and swim than me...

OP posts:
Greggers2017 · 13/06/2019 17:25

If they were in that part of the pool why couldn't you have used a different part?
I've been swimming and chatting recently. Me and my friend are heavily pregnant and cannot swim fast.

mathanxiety · 13/06/2019 17:25

Was it lane swimming or a public swimming session?

If you want a session anywhere with rules about speeds and specific lanes where speedier swimming speeds are expected then look for a lane swimming session, not just a different pool.

Mitzimaybe · 13/06/2019 17:26

If it's not lane swim then you were being very rude.

Millie2018 · 13/06/2019 17:26

I’m a regular swimmer and don’t understand how 2 people supposedly blocked off the equivalent of 2 lanes?
You do have a choice whether to swim between them or not. You could have waited behind them, as annoying as it is. If there are no lanes sectioned off, you are attending an open session with very few rules.
Those ladies probably attend that session to be able to chat without faster swimmers overtaking continuously.

Not necessarily more but equally entitled, you sound like a serious swimmer and non lane swimming is not for you.

Private or public pool is still aim for lane swimming if I were you.

user1472754004 · 13/06/2019 17:29

It was very busy today, that was why this happened

OP posts:
BananaCatto · 13/06/2019 17:29

I HATE swimming pool etiquette. I swim in the slow lane and get people tutting at me for...guess what...swimming slowly.

I’ve just cancelled my pool membership and will use that to fund 6 hours of a private pool a month
