Recently watched White Water Summer with Kevin Bacon. That could never be made now, lol. But it's good to have a showcase for films from other eras as they help shine an enlightening light on the social mores previous generations grew up on.

I LOVE this channel Also Forces TV which recently ran my favourite 80s TV series The Equalizer
They are currently running this again just after 1 am weeknights and earlier on weekends
Talking Pics ran Callan earlier this year but i watched them on you tube as it clashed with the former.

A couple of months ago i discovered Yours Retro magazine too. New issue is out next week.

WeWantSweet · 16/06/2019 20:25

Sorry for late response Helena, do you also check out Freeview 61 & 62, True Movies and True Entertainment? There's such a fine legacy of programmes and films from past eras that deserve more exposure.

I've been watching Shadows, a children's drama series from the 1970's with 2 of my dc.
They're a bit slow by today's standards but they are quite weird and spooky.
We watched a Tufty club film the other week, they show a lot of the old public information films.

I like it!

WeWantSweet · 16/06/2019 21:06

Thanks for responding justcallmepeter. I get what you mean about the Shadows being slow, but I like how the ITV equivalent then seemed to expect and presume a higher level of appreciation from their viewers than the lowest common denominator seemingly expected today.

They also didnt treat viewers like idiots and knew we were capable of working out the nuances of storylines and piecing things together and making connections .

Wilfred Greatorex was one such writer.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 16/06/2019 23:53

Yes! I love kitchen sink dramas! And yes to the other channels mentioned.

I'm developed an appreciation for channel 87 country music and "memory lane" Blush Grin

I love Talking pictures. Alistair Sims , Margaret Rutherford and all the British actors of that time. Reminds me of my Nana and Grandma and great times growing up. My favourite is Greyfriars Bobby.

ilovesooty · 17/06/2019 00:05

Another Talking Pictures fan here.

alittlequinnie · 17/06/2019 08:07

Me too - I watched the whole of the Thorn Birds on Sunday (even though I have it on DVD!) and last week I thoroughly enjoyed "Raise the Titanic"!!!

My recording messed up "Woman in a dressing gown" though and I only saw half of it - constantly checking to see when it will be on again so I can watch the second half!

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 17/06/2019 08:08

movies4men have some corkers too.

justcallmepeter · 18/06/2019 08:45

I have my own Talking Pictures folder on our freeview box 'taped ' programmes.
It's got A Taste of Honey, Room at the Top, Saturday Night Sunday Morning and lots of short films. I need to get round to watching!
I watched a Tufty Club information film with my youngest DD recently and she's asked if there's any more.
I also like Paramount Network- they showed some Stephen King adaptations that I'd not seen before and I'm taping the US version of The Office this week Smile

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 18/06/2019 09:02

I love Paramount! I started the US Office and House yesterday Smile

Yes yes to all the other channels mentioned on this thread Grin

thebabessavedme · 18/06/2019 09:03

I love Talking Pictures, I really enjoy the films shot around the 60s in east london, reminds me of childhood, looking at London now the city looks like a new world!

HelenaDove · 18/06/2019 22:11

This is on the horror channel at 10.55pm tonight.

There are a few horror anthologies but this one doesnt get shown as often

WeWantSweet · 19/06/2019 18:28

Yes to liking Paramount and the Horror Channel as well. London Live (Freeview 8) is also worth checking for different films (though mostly with a London theme) and old C4 programmes like Faking It and Secret Millionaire.

Has anyone else been watching The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes?

Last weekends one was one of the stories about occult detective Carnacki In this case he was played by Donald Pleasance.

Why on earth has no one thought about making a series of the Carnacki stories Would be perfect for Autumn/Winter viewing for the Halloween , Guy Fawkes pre Christmas period.

Pity they didnt do it while Pleasance was still alive The part really suited him.

Wonder who could play Carnacki now.

WeWantSweet · 14/07/2019 21:30

Up voting any promotion of Talking Pictures channel by default..

It is literally the only channel I watch live. Everything else I watch on iPlayer or Netflix.

It’s a tiny channel run by a father and daughter.

PancakeAndKeith · 14/07/2019 21:36

I also love Glimpses, where they show old information films or bits of news reel.

HelenaDove · 14/07/2019 21:41

Interesting fact..........Donald Pleasance would have been 100 this October.

HelenaDove · 14/07/2019 21:45

I love when they show the old Thames idents Forces TV does this too.

skybluee · 14/07/2019 22:01

US Office is the only series I can think of where I prefer the American version to the British one.
Got me through some rough times.
Enjoy.
