AIBU to not understand how any MPs can support Boris Johnson

I mean he's awful. He achieved nothing of note as Mayor of London, was utterly rubbish as foreign secretary - including ensuring that British Iranian woman wasn't released by utterly failing to understand his briefing. He can't grasp or is uninterested in detail, but also has an absence of big strategic vision. And he actually seems pretty nasty.
All MPs must be able to see his original moniker of bumbling Boris has actually proved to be true when he was given proper grown ups jobs.
So why are they voting for a mess creator when the country is already in an almighty mess? If they vote for him, surely it will just confirm in people's minds even further that the Conservatives are totally incapable of governing?

He's gonna win the Tory Leader race isn't he?! Shock

Because the polls show that they have a better chance of being elected with him as leader than anyone else.

Sadly a lot of the electorate are complete idiots (including some of my relatives apparently) and think that Boris being 'a bit of a personality' makes him the best choice for PM. Even a bit of digging can see what a nakedly-ambitious, nasty, narcissistic egotist he is, but that's too much hard work when you can be watching Love Island or posting cat pics on Facebook instead.

BMW6 · 13/06/2019 18:48

and what do you think JanetforPresident?

CloserIAm2Fine · 13/06/2019 18:51

It’s depressing

I half think they’re just going to let him hang himself and then use him as the scapegoat until the dust settles. Of course none of them give a fuck what mess he’ll create for the country in the meantime

NoBaggyPants · 13/06/2019 18:56

@Hazlenutpie, complete misquote there, John Prescott's opinion of Johnson's tenure as mayor was:

"He's a clown."

Wonderbread · 13/06/2019 18:57

It’s an almost dead cert now that Johnson will be Prime Minister.

I refuse to call him Boris as that propagates his ‘loveable buffoon’ character when the reality is that he’s a very dangerous narcissistic man. I know people who have worked with him and they are all VERY afraid for the future

duffeldaisy · 13/06/2019 19:12

"It’s an almost dead cert now that Johnson will be Prime Minister."

No it's not. The way the system works, every time a candidate gets knocked out, the votes for them will go behind one of the remaining candidates. So you could have 40% of voters going for candidate A, 20% for B 15% for C, the rest for other ones, it looks like candidate A will walk it.

But C and the rest will be discounted in the next round.

But if just over 3/4 of those other 40% who voted for C etc then support candidate B and just under 1/4 vote A, B will then win.

Boris Johnson is a terrifying prospect as PM. But they're all awful. Even the seeming 'nicest' have appalling voting records when you look them up on They Work For You. And I think that's the best judgement - how they've actually acted and voted in the past, rather than whatever rubbish they now promise.

Wonderbread · 13/06/2019 19:16

@duffeldaisy It would be hugely shocking, though not impossible granted, that he wouldn’t end up in the final 2 - and pretty much all political commentators are saying this. If he’s in the final 2 he’ll win when it goes out to the wider Conservative party.

Who have an average age of 72.

120,000 elderly people are deciding who will govern us through our most turbulent times.

What a fucked system

Lalliella · 13/06/2019 19:23

Anyone remember Dave saying, 'vote for chaos with Ed Milliband ro strong and stable government with me?'

Oh Mr and Mrs Miliband you have a lot to answer for. Why didn’t you teach little Edward how to eat properly? That bacon sandwich has changed the course of history.

Tavannach · 13/06/2019 19:30

Conservative MPs and party members are so far removed from most people that they imagine Boris Johnson with his bottle blond hair and bumbling manner is what appeals to the proles.

Tavannach · 13/06/2019 19:32

Nobody looks good when they're photographed eating. When I was an event photographer I never did it. The photos would be unusable.

Chanteuse · 13/06/2019 19:38

I can't fathom why anyone would vote for him. He is an idiot - a dangerous one at that.

None of those in the leadership contest could organise a piss up in a brewery, let alone a country. Shocking state of affairs. Blush

Tinyteatime · 13/06/2019 19:38

I have no idea. What’s worse is that on radio 4 this evening they said a poll had been conducted that showed with Boris as PM the Tory’s would win a GE. As far as I can see most people in the country think he’s a complete buffoon at the very best, the rest of us think he’s dangerous.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/06/2019 19:40

Because they know he will an election

For the Tories it’s more important to be in power than to stick to their principles but being in power is where you can make changes

Don’t underestimate how popular he is when he is campaigning he won the leave vote and I don’t doubt he will gain a majority as PM

Wonderbread · 13/06/2019 19:40

No they don’t. They don’t give a shit who appears to the proles. And because of our stupid system they don’t have to.

They are largely right wing white men intent on preserving their huge wealth. Hence Johnson’s only policy so far of raising the wage at which you have to pay higher income tax to £80k. This means my family would be £550 a month better off. A month. Whilst people are starving on the poverty line and using food banks.

Shame on them all

ReganSomerset · 13/06/2019 19:40

Is it a choice between him and Jeremy Hunt, or is there a good option?

Wonderbread · 13/06/2019 19:48

In my opinion there’s no good option. But Johnson’s the horrific option

Wavyheaded · 13/06/2019 19:50

The tories don't care about anything except saving their own fat arses and saving the tory party.

It's outrageous that they haven't allowed a general election yet. Another unelected PM... yay.

duffeldaisy · 13/06/2019 19:51

@Wonderbread

"Who have an average age of 72.

It really is. :-(

Wonderbread · 13/06/2019 19:56

Did you just see the C4 News talking to Conservative party members. Apparently they are 92% white. Mostly male. Well-off obvs.

They asked 3 of them why they were supporting Johnson and they said he was a ‘colourful character’. Then they asked what they thought of his racist language and the response was a shrug and a nonchalant ‘people get uptight now and then’.

Then they bragged how they were having dinner with Johnson that night.

We’re all doomed

ReganSomerset · 13/06/2019 19:58

Jeremy Hunt seems like a pretty horrific option tbh, looking at the mess he made of the nhs. Also, doesn't he have some pretty anti-abortion viewpoints?

Annasgirl · 13/06/2019 20:01

Whew just watched C4 news and the interview with the Conservative party members - they live up to every stereotype including mansplaining the word “analogy” to the female journalist.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 13/06/2019 20:12

This is dreadful, I don’t want that effin turnip head representing our country as Prime Minister. (He’s worse than Trump, and that’s saying something.) There’s not one Tory I would trust - we’re toast folks.

Poloshot · 13/06/2019 20:24

He'll be getting my vote if he's one of the remaining candidates when it's left to the party to decide. Dry your eyes

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 13/06/2019 20:38

Why, Poloshot?

What is it about Johnson that means you would like to see him as PM?
