WW group closing down AIBU?

Poppiesway1 · 12/06/2019 17:35

Putting this here for traffic too..

In March I Joined WW (weightwatchers) signed up to a three month deal as worked out cheaper. (DM also joined with me).
On my second weigh in the consultant announced she was leaving and the group would be closing. I was given a list of other groups and times. Because I work full time and the distance away the other evening groups I just wasn’t able to attend these. I have tried to attend a particular group twice but it just wasn’t practical due to its distance and time of meeting in the evening. ( have no one to watch dc while I would have been there on that night) I really need to go to a group and cannot do the “online” on my own aspect it.

So.. WW have let my mum cancel her membership (after their 14day cooling off period) but have refused to cancel mine, and are continuing to take money from my account. They have offered to send me a list of other groups.. even though I’ve said none are practical for people who work during the day. Their customer services is shocking, and just parrot the same 14 day rule and not acknowledging their group closed down.

AIBU to want to cancel this membership? Or are WW within their right to continue taking money.

I feel that they should have been open and honest that the group we joined was closing down 2 weeks later, I feel that they were deceitful and have not carried out their side of the contract.

Anyone else had issues with WW not cancelling membership?

Why don’t you just cancel the direct debit?

edwinbear · 12/06/2019 17:43

I'd just cancel the DD too and let them whistle for it.

Poppiesway1 · 12/06/2019 17:43

It’s not a direct debit unfortunately or I would,
They take it via the card details which the bank say they cannot cancel Angry

Have you checked the small print?

WrongKindOfFace · 12/06/2019 17:46

You can cancel your card. Not sure about the legalities though.

Wolfiefan · 12/06/2019 17:46

Isn’t the three months nearly up?
If the contract states that you can’t cancel after two weeks and you signed up to that then I don’t know how you could get out of that.

Peachsummer · 12/06/2019 17:48

The bank are talking rubbish. Tell the card provider you’ve withdrawn permission for WW to take these payments. And tell WW the same. Report it as card fraud if they continue to take payments after you’ve withdrawn permission.

Peachsummer · 12/06/2019 17:49

Or cancel the card!

HilaryBriss · 12/06/2019 17:49

You can cancel a CPA (continuous payment authority), contact your bank again and be a bit more insistant. Info can be found here: Cancel CPA

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 12/06/2019 17:54

Just report your card list and get a new one.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 12/06/2019 17:54

Lost

Poppiesway1 · 12/06/2019 17:57

wolfiefan well.. I thought it was up. But turned out as I had a joining code from a friend they gave me an extra month which extended my contact apparently.

I will go back to the bank on Friday and try again!

I don’t see how they justify the group closing but they can still charge me for their service!

Ring the bank and cancel the card, when they try to take a payment the card won’t work Grin
I have asked my bank advise in similar situation and they blocked the company from taking money from my account.

Yesicancancan · 12/06/2019 18:32

I meant, I lost my card, so cancelled it. That’s how I found out companies couldn’t collect their payments

JovialNickname · 12/06/2019 18:41

Just to add to the cacophony of voices here... Cancel your card. They will then be unable to take any further payments from your account (but you will be able to keep on banking and using your bank account as normal)!

Queenoftheashes · 12/06/2019 18:46

Yeah cancel card. I got a new card before and ww couldn’t take my money and we’re going to just cancel the membership. It’s easier cancelling that way. I now pay via Monzo which won’t send payment without sufficient funds so I can just empty the account to cancel.

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 12/06/2019 19:01

Didn't you lose your bank card and need a new one OP? Wink

Ijustdontcare · 12/06/2019 19:30

I used to work in the credit card department for a major bank. All of you telling the OP to report the card as lost are giving bad advice the business behind the CPA can still claim money from it and it could be passed onto your new card. This varies between banks and is more likely on a credit card than debit but still does happen. The only way to cancel the CPA is with the company or with your bank directly. Phone your bank don't get angry and say you wish for them to cancel the CPA and don't get off the phone until its done if one person says it can't be done ask for their manager.

I hated CPA's before banks couldn't cancel them at requests from customers. The amount of hours I wasted of my life explaining to people that even if they closed their credit card they would still get sent bills, and they had to speak to the company direct (most at that time were dodgy weight loss pills on the internet)

Smelborp · 12/06/2019 19:33

I would shame them publicly on twitter etc. It’s outrageous.

melissasummerfield · 12/06/2019 19:44

Even if you cancel your card they will still be able to take it, when i lost mine my monthly card payment to itunes continued to go out?

You absolutely can cancel them with your bank though, I had to do it for a google business account when they wouldn't stop taking the payments despite me cancelling it!

MotherTime3 · 12/06/2019 19:51

I cancelled mine due to being pregnant. They told me I was entitled to a refund on that basis, then proceeded to make me jump through so many hoops to get it.
I ended up sending them photos of my maternity file, and an explanation that no doctor would confirm the date I conceived, as they don’t know, thus ESTIMATED due date based on my last period. After much emailing and biology lessons they gave me my money.

If you’re after your money back I would go to twitter or Facebook, if you just want to cancel the payments, lose that bank card. Good luck

donquixotedelamancha · 12/06/2019 19:57

Phone your bank don't get angry and say you wish for them to cancel the CPA and don't get off the phone until its done if one person says it can't be done ask for their manager.

Do this.

At the same time write to WW explaining that you are terminating payment as they are in breach of contract because they no longer provide the service to which you signed up. No point ringing, they are set up to mess you around and rely on people giving up.

Flatwhite101 · 12/06/2019 20:08

I've had to do something similar with cancelling a CPA. The bank was somewhat reluctant, and had to phone rather than do in branch, but is in the FCA guidelines that they can do it if you request.

codemonkey · 12/06/2019 20:17

Cancel with WW (in writing). Also have a stern word with your back and remind them that the Financial Conduct Authority stipulates that banks must cancel CPAs on a customer's request. This ruling followed an investigation in 2013.
