Credit card hacked

Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:37

I got a text today saying that a transaction had gone through that they felt was fraudulent and to call them.
Spoke to them and not only today's transaction £160 in Aldi (online) and £220 on Le Creuset in April (first I heard of it) were highlighted.
So they've cancelled the card.
She said I can't check transactions as card is now cancelled.
She asked whether I've saved card details on any websites (I have) and whether I've anti-virus protection (I don't know whether I have or not).
I also use two other cards online.

What should I be doing now? And how the fuck did the bastards hack my account?

And who the hell shops in Aldi to the tune of £160 unless they're buying tvs or something??
Plus they obviously have expensive bloody taste as I can't afford even one frying pan from Le Creuset!
Bastards.

Plus, I'm wondering how they knew that I never shopped in Aldi lol!

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:42

Or that I can't afford Le Creuset for that matter!

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:44

She said my account hasn't been debited for either of the transactions, so does that mean the thief didn't get their shopping/saucepans? And why didn't they contact me in April??

They may have still got the goods. You really need to go through all the transactions and check for any other odd ones. Usually they do a few smaller purchases to check card will work before larger ones. It may have been cloned and used contactless.

Teddybear45 · 11/06/2019 20:49

they know because they have a fraud system that can go back through the whole history of your card useage and know where you shop, your usual shopping habits, and sometimes even how you touch the app on your phone.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:55

They were both online transactions.

Yogagirl123 · 11/06/2019 20:58

I spend a similar amount in Aldi each week 😚

Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:58

I wonder will they send the information to police?
Whenever I've reported a crime, I might aswell have been pissing in the wind.

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:59

Yogagirl - my card is cancelled now haha! Move away from the computer.

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2019 21:01

No they won’t send the information to the police. I’ve worked in fraud for a big bank. They couldn’t possibly send them, far too many.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:03

So these cunts continue with immunity? Well isn't that great!

OP posts:
RosaWaiting · 11/06/2019 21:03

I don't know how they do it OP

are you saying that these didn't show up on your statement?

I have a credit card with a very low limit so in theory any fraudsters can't get away with much. However, my company were shit hot when someone paid for airport parking with my card - esp funny as I don't travel! - within 2 hours someone from the company called and asked if it was me because it seemed an odd transaction.

so the fact that they are questioning something 2 months later seems odd.

I had to fill in various forms but I don't know what happened.

I never save card details on any site.

RosaWaiting · 11/06/2019 21:04

PS if you don't know if you have antivirus then surely you don't have it?

I don't know if anti virus programmes are installed on iThings but I only shop from my home computer and that has anti virus on it. Do you do any online banking? You probably need anti virus.

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2019 21:07

So these cunts continue with immunity? Well isn't that great!

Yeah pretty much! Banks work really hard to stop fraud as it is the bank that loses out at the end of the day. But yes, unless you’re talking one multi million pound fraud then it’s not reported.

jimmyhill · 11/06/2019 21:07

Doesn't matter.

Cards cancelled. You lose nothing. The credit card pays the price for their own lax security (the price of convenient cards)

It's not like you were mugged in the street.

Purpleartichoke · 11/06/2019 21:08

I do a whole lot of online shopping. My card gets hacked every few years. I keep two in rotation just because I expect it to happen. I also refuse to have a debit card, only credit cards, so my bank account can’t be touched.

The police did follow-up once. They actually contacted me. They were using the credit card fraud to arrest someone they suspected of a bigger crime.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:09

Uber and JustEat are just two of the sites I've saved card details on. In fact Uber might well be the source of the breach as I use that on my phone too. Bastards. It's just handier to book an uber when the card details are pre-saved and you're in a hurry, rather than having to enter the card details every time.
To be honest I haven't checked my statements and now the credit card online account is gone, so I can't check. She said it will be back up in 1-2 days and that I can check then.

How do I know whether I've anti virus software on phone/laptop?
They sound English, as I didn't even know you could order online from Aldi! As for their penchant for Le Creuset - I hope they get scalded!

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:12

Well the total fraud on my account is £380...

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:14

I seem to recall something happening with my debit card a couple of years ago and they asked whether I had any objection to them calling police. They didn't ask me that today. Maybe it's different for credit cards vs debit cards?

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:16

How can I get anti-virus software? Can you download it? I presumed all laptops/phones came with it pre-installed?

OP posts:
Aquamarine1029 · 11/06/2019 21:16

My debit card got hacked a few years ago and some arsehole in the Bronx, NYC ordered £80 of pizza with it. How the actual fuck does that happen?? Thankfully I saw it straight away and cancelled the card before anything else was charged.

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2019 21:16

No difference for credit and debit.

Your debit card might have been part of a wider investigation though.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 11/06/2019 21:18

I am sorry you have experienced this.

It felt horrible when it happened to me and made me nervous using credit cards online.

I got some good advice though.

Only ever use 1 Credit Card online. Set it up with a low limit and check your balance / transactions regularly every few days.

Don’t use that credit card in a shop. Only online.

Don’t ever allow a web site to store your credit card details.

Have unique passwords for every account you use, preferably a random mix of letters / numbers.

You don’t have to provide a true answer for any security questions such as ‘where you were born’. Again use a random mix of letters numbers.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:22

no, i wasn't mugged in the street but there is some grubby fingered cunt with my credit card details out there somewhere and that makes me rather annoyed.
