Credit card hacked

Jonette · 11/06/2019 20:37

I got a text today saying that a transaction had gone through that they felt was fraudulent and to call them.
Spoke to them and not only today's transaction £160 in Aldi (online) and £220 on Le Creuset in April (first I heard of it) were highlighted.
So they've cancelled the card.
She said I can't check transactions as card is now cancelled.
She asked whether I've saved card details on any websites (I have) and whether I've anti-virus protection (I don't know whether I have or not).
I also use two other cards online.

What should I be doing now? And how the fuck did the bastards hack my account?

maybe I'm a dinosaur but the laptop I have, I had to buy antivirus software, download it and I pay for it to renew every year.

you might have bought something with pre-loaded antivirus, presume you can check via Settings?

Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:56

Also, I think my hacker is a woman. Shopping in Aldi, buying saucepans? Doesn't scream 'man' to me. So I want to drag her by the hair lol.

It doesn't sound like you've been busy especially careful though - how did you not notice the Le Creuset transaction on your statement?

And presumably if you don't know whether you have antivirus software then you don't have it.

Luckily you're not out of pocket but please use this experience to be more careful in the future!

Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:01

I didn't notice the Le Creuset transaction as the woman said it didn't show up on my statement as it wasn't allowed through. Why they didn't call me then I don't know. I would certainly have noticed 220 charged to my card. I got the text at about 5.20 about a transaction which had gone through at 5.11pm. So they were pretty on the ball. She said that 2 other transactions were flagged i.e the saucepans and another transaction which I had actually made.

Just eat was hacked in a big way I think back in March.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:04

Oh well, that's it then. Hopefully the new card and not saving details will sort the issue in the future.

Thieving cunts.

I don't understand why they didn't contact you and issue a new card when they stopped the transaction in April.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:09

Me neither. Silly on their parts as they're taking the hit.

Presumably yer woman got her saucepans and her Aldi delivery though. If it went through far enough to be flagged, it means the bank honoured it.

"If it went through far enough to be flagged, it means the bank honoured it."

okay, this is getting confusing. You said they didn't put the April transaction through?!

caughtinanet · 11/06/2019 22:16

Are you sure it was a genuine call and not part of some scam?

Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:17

That's what they told me. That it hadn't left my account. But if it went through far enough to reach them, it must have been paid somehow.
Like the aldi shopping today, I don't know whether Aldi/bank honoured the transaction or blocked it before she could complete the transaction? I'm guessing they honoured it, otherwise it wouldn't be triggering anything on my account?

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:17

Definitely legitimately my bank.

I use my credit & debit cards online very frequently and have done so my entire life - I never had anything like this happen so I don’t think it’s necessarily that common. (The only time they were used fraudulently was when I lost my debit card and some random quickly used my contactless to go shopping🙄)

The bank may have been alerted due to a strange IP address, device ID, transaction location etc. Eg If i visit a new city and use my card, my bank may automatically block it. Their algorithms will check for buying patterns that differ from yours.

Could it be someone you know that could have done this? Someone that at some point had access to your card/purse?

Have you had any strange phone calls or emails purporting to be from your bank?

When making purchases on my phone, I tend to use Apple Pay rather than actually using my card. You can definitely use Apple Pay/Android equivalent for Uber and probably just eat too. That way, your card details won’t be saved.

Obviously sort your anti virus protection out, if you use windows the control centre will show if you are using one or not

Sexnotgender · 11/06/2019 22:35

It won’t necessarily have paid out. Transactions happen in two parts.

stucknoue · 11/06/2019 22:39

I suspect your card was cloned. When mine was done it was a dodgy petrol garage assistant and they recon it was many months prior to the fraud transaction because the cloned info was sold on - they got the guy though!

It's just a pain changing everything though they give you your money back

PigletJohn · 11/06/2019 22:41

An interesting point.

A person phoned you saying they were from your credit company.

Perhaps they weren't.

Phone the number on the back of your card (not the number that phoned you, not any number they told you to call) and ask.

Did the person who phoned ask for the security number off the back of your card?

Or your date of birth, pin, etc? To "confirm your identity?"

Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:42

The woman said she couldn't tell where the transactions were made. maybe other members of the team can.
I'm a bit dopey about Android pay? Surely that holds your details too.

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 22:45

PigletJohn
They didn't phone me. They texted me from the same number they text me off to advise me if I'm going over overdraft or similar.

  1. We'll text you in a few minutes
  2. Details of dodgy transaction and tel. no. to call them on.
  3. Apart from my name, address, DOB, they didn't ask for anything. Just the last four digits of my card that was included in the text.
  4. They have nothing to gain by cancelling my credit card.

PigletJohn · 11/06/2019 22:52

Let me check this

You got a text asking you to phone a number.

The person said they were your bank and sounded convincing.

At what point did you phone the number on the back of your card to verify?

If "none" do it now.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 23:17

I'm on hold to someone else right now but will call the bank directly

OP posts:
Jonette · 11/06/2019 23:20

They're saying they're experiencing exceptionally high numbers of calls and that it will be 20 minutes. It's Lloyds bank.
