Greedy DS

sorry - mainly posting for traffic here!

DS is 6 weeks old. We recently increased his milk to 6oz as he was draining the 5 and still chewing his hands afterwards, but he is now doing this after drinking 6oz!

Surely 7oz would be a lot of milk to give him at this age? Confused feeding guidelines on the formula box suggest 7oz to be introduced at 4 months old..

Would it be worth trying him on hungry baby milk or is there not much difference?

Ftm here so not really clued up

No dont give hungry milk. How often is he feeding? Could just be a growth spurt

SoyDora · 11/06/2019 19:28

I didn’t think Hans chewing was necessarily a sign of hunger?

SoyDora · 11/06/2019 19:29

*hand, not Hans!

alfie22 · 11/06/2019 19:29

@dementedpixie at night time he's started to go 6 hours without feeding. In the day it varies between 2.5 - 4 hrs.

Is hungry milk a no go then?

Hungry baby milk is a scam really. It’s just the same milk that sits thicker in the stomach to make it feel like they are full

Feed him however much he wants right now.

alfie22 · 11/06/2019 19:30

@SoyDora he's doing that along with crying and his head moving searching for milk! Sad

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 19:31

2.5-4 hours is pretty normal and it's great he has a 6 hour stretch at night. Hungry milk is harder to digest and can cause constipation. It has the same calories as first milk

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/06/2019 19:33

I think 2.5 to 4 hours during the day is good. Just feed every 3 hours regardless (unless he is insistent before that), and give bigger bottles. Avoid Hungry Baby milk.

alfie22 · 11/06/2019 19:33

@dementedpixie I will avoid the hungry milk then! He already doesn't poo that often so I don't want to cause constipation.

He hasn't pood since Sunday Confused but done plenty of wet ones. Don't know if I should be worried

Hungry milk is vile. It's got little jelly like worms in it (that's what we called them!), and it's not really for babies who are happy to go hours between feeds. It's more for babies who drain more than a full bottle in one go.
Just give him more feeds.

Pizzachicken · 11/06/2019 19:34

If your baby is hungry, feed them. My eldest daughter wanted endless feeds, and I gave them willingly. She was breastfed but I think it still applies.
She is massive now but very slim.

My second couldn't care less about being fed often and is tiny.

If they're hungry, feed them.

Ps. You're doing ace.

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 19:37

Hungry milk is casein milk protein based whereas first milk is whey based. Casein is harder to digest and is supposed make them feel fuller for longer. There is no evidence that it helps

alfie22 · 11/06/2019 19:38

@MonkeyfaceThereturn ew Shock I'll be staying away from it then

Feed on demand, baby will tell you how hungry they are and avoid the hungry baby food at this stage. My two were both formula fed and both had fantastic appetites, the fact you are doing such a good job and have a baby that sleeps six hours at night is amazing! Well done you!

alfie22 · 11/06/2019 19:40

Thank you @Pizzachicken 💕

Feed him as much as he wants. Both of my DS were drinking 7oz a time by a month old. My younger one is 15 months. He has three meals a day, healthy snacks and drinks 2x 8oz bottles on the trot before bed. Sleeps well and whilst he’s a little chubb his older brother was the same and now a tall slim 6yo.

SunshineCake · 11/06/2019 20:08

I fed my son two hourly for six months. Breast fed but even so, they eat when they want. Not by a clock. Their tummies are tiny.

toriathet · 11/06/2019 22:20

my newborn used to guzzle 11oz from a hour old and no he never brought it back up

just born i fed him the hospital ready milk stuff and he guzzled that in a few sucks and cried and cried for more so they brought me more,4 hospital sized bottles later he was happy.this went on all night(4 bottle every hour and half) so the hospital said dont bother with the guidlines for weight give him what he needs, when we were leaving,(stayed in 2 days)they said hes gone through majority of their supply so had to order more in,with in 2 weeks he was on extra hungry milk and i used to go through 3 tubs a week

he wasnt a small baby though 9lb 10 and 26 inches

i put him on cows milk at 9 months as he weened(proper meals not jars) at 5 months,as well as the milk as he was always hungry

8 now and hes still always hungry and eats 9-10 meals a day and 4-68 pints of milk(hes 5ft 2, 125 pounds)

not every baby follows the guidlines and some are supper hungry

mondaylisasmile · 11/06/2019 22:25

Op, please don't fall for the marketing, hungry baby milk can introduce problems with babies eating even less because they find it harder to digest!
It's fine to ask opinions on the internet, research etc but please check with your health visitor, midwife, doctor etc before changing your baby's diet, not strangers on the internet.

My nonmedical anecdotal view is that an avg of 3oz every 3hrs (in whatever form that takes, so more for longer periods etc) sounds entirely normal for that age. But you shouldn't trust me or other posters if you have concerns.

mondaylisasmile · 11/06/2019 22:28

Also btw chewing fists isn't always hunger, it's also seen with some babies with when they need winding. You'll know your baby best though, and you'll learn more over time

Sorry - posted too soon.
😱 at an hour old baby drinking 11 ozs !!!
He must have cost a fortune to feed !!!

alfie22 · 11/06/2019 22:35

Christ @toriathet you must spend a small fortune feeding him Grin

superhappymagicforest · 11/06/2019 22:39

Please look into paced feeding - it will help your baby control how much they are getting instead of guzzling the whole bottle: www.mamanatural.com/paced-bottle-feeding/
