Greedy DS

sorry - mainly posting for traffic here!

DS is 6 weeks old. We recently increased his milk to 6oz as he was draining the 5 and still chewing his hands afterwards, but he is now doing this after drinking 6oz!

Surely 7oz would be a lot of milk to give him at this age? Confused feeding guidelines on the formula box suggest 7oz to be introduced at 4 months old..

Would it be worth trying him on hungry baby milk or is there not much difference?

Ftm here so not really clued up

Just checked my own NHS and it's still 120 to 150mls per kg per 24 hrs.

I'm assuming some NHS trusts have some differences. Doesn't really matter as my advice was to speak to local GP/ midwife/ health visitor, who will tell mum what the current advice is.

The info I gave was from the NHS website. Are you saying that if a baby was still hungry you would deny them more milk?

Unfortunately this was my experience when I had my son - midwives constantly told me how it was impossible for my newborn to be hungry as he'd fed so much (breast fed in hospital) and their stomach can barely take a tea spoon on colostrum at that stage (utter bollocks).

After two utterly hideous nights I relented and gave him formula. He drank a whole 7oz bottle, winded extremely easily and slept for ages.

He was easily on 7oz bottle within a month or so, around 5/6 times a day. No problems with wind or reflux, never possetted or anything. He was just a big child with a big appetite.

Conversely, a friend was given the advice about how much to feed akin to the above 'guidelines' and followed it religiously. Her baby failed to gain weight and she was still seeing the HV for months post-partum. Her baby cried all the time. He was skinny and frankly looked undernourished. If she'd just ignored all the crap advise she'd have had a much happier baby.
