To think there isn’t going to be a general election?

I hear talk of ‘Corbyn by Christmas’ and also discussion about which tory candidate would be best to win a general election.

Have I missed something? With tory support at rock bottom they’re hardly going to call an election are they? Heaven knows I wish they would, but I just can’t see how it’s even vaguely possible??

They won't. But also Corbyn wouldn't win even if they did. There are more people anti Corbyn and Momentum than there are supporters.

They would scrape another coalition or somehow the Libdems would walk it.

bigKiteFlying · 11/06/2019 14:28

I think it unlikely - but I'm not sure how the get parliament out of it's current deadlock without a second refundreum which is also looking unlikely or a general election

MauisHouseOnMaui · 11/06/2019 14:29

I don't think the new PM would call a GE but I do think a vote of no confidence will be called shortly after they take office and, depending on which candidate wins, it might just pass. I can't fathom any of the parties getting a majority government together so we'd end up with either a minority government or a coalition and yet more uncertainty.

Alsohuman · 11/06/2019 14:30

If Boris wins, there will be a no confidence vote almost immediately. Christ only knows what kind of mess will ensue then.

NoBaggyPants · 11/06/2019 14:36

Labour won Peterborough last week, the Tories came third behind the Brexit Party. There's definitely support out there, whether that is enough to get a majority who knows.

The problem is who would form a coalition? Labour won't join with the Brexit Party or the Tories. The LibDems will join with anyone that gives them a bit of power, but are unlikely to win sufficient seats to able to swing anything. So that leaves a Conservative/ Brexit Party/ DUP mash up. And that's fucking horrific.

Pringlefan · 11/06/2019 14:37

@alsohuman Gosh. Guess I’m rooting for Boris then! Strange feeling.

I think all parties fear a GE at the moment.

I don't believe there will ever be a majority government again in my lifetime. I think the Brexit party have made it such that, instead of being a party to vote for in times of protest, people will now vote for them in a General Election. Clearly they wouldn't win a majority but neither would any other party.

I think the tories fear this would be the case and that Labour under Corbyn would seek to govern by having a coalition with SNP.

Do I think there will be a GE? Probably but not immediately but possibly by the end of the year due to a lack of confidence vote.

Lllot5 · 11/06/2019 14:41

Can’t see the next prime minister calling a ge somehow. Could be put under pressure from a no confidence vote in commons but certainly won’t do it under they’re own steam.

emkoda · 11/06/2019 14:59

It was Corbyn by Christmas in 2017, and 2018. I think he is going to be like Cliff Richard, only without the BBC accusing him of being a paedophile obviously. The smart money would be on - no GE by the next Labour conference, bye-bye Jeremy. Len McCluskey has ploughed a lot into the Corbyn project, and like any sensible investor is going to want a return on that at some point.

JennaOfEluria · 11/06/2019 15:00

The current government has until 2022...you can bet that whoever the next PM is they'll cling to that like a life raft because there can't be anyone in Parliament naive enough to believe their party will have a majority in a GE except Farage but he doesn't count as he doesn't hold a Parliamentary seat

Corbyn is unelectable as PM so labour won't win a GE, Lib Dems are seeking a new leader themselves but really don't look like they'll have enough seats to have any clout and none of the other parties could field enough credible candidates to jostle for majority.

Our best hope is a rainbow coalition of Lib Dem, Labour, SNP & Plaid. Their policies aren't terribly out of step with each other and having a multi party coalition would force reasonable discussion to achieve absolutely anything. Something that's far too long overdue in the UK. Crucially such a coalition would remove the toxic Tories.

megletthesecond · 11/06/2019 15:01

I'm a lefty and Corbyn won't win.

Pringlefan · 11/06/2019 16:21

For the people who think Corbyn won't win, who, on the labour side, do you think would stand a better chance of winning?

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 11/06/2019 16:26

Keir Starmer
Emily Thornberry
Tom Watson
Yvette Cooper

Just about anyone really.

Gth1234 · 11/06/2019 16:31

Never mind pro-rogue the rogues. We are going to declare martial law, and get out that way.

Singlenotsingle · 11/06/2019 16:35

They would worry about Brexit winning.
I don't know who the MP would be though.

sweetkitty · 11/06/2019 16:37

I agree though Labour need to get shot of Corbyn and get someone half decent in charge. I think if they did they would win the next GE

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 11/06/2019 16:50

I suspect the 31st October deadline may settle it. It looks likely that the EU27 will finally lose patience and force the UK to grow up and make a decision by refusing to extend the deadline any more without what they euphemistically refer to as a "democratic event". The UK Parliament will then need to choose between

  1. leaving without deal,
  2. holding a second referendum,
  3. dismissing the government and seeing if anyone else can form some kind of coalition in the national interest (I'm not sure that this would be acceptable to the EU) or
  4. dissolution and an election.

I'm not sure that even 4 would be acceptable to the other 27 because it will very likely lead to more refusal to face reality. The choice is likely to boil down to no-deal or a referendum.

megletthesecond · 11/06/2019 17:07

What Also said.
I'd like to see Cooper get the job.

Singlenotsingle · 11/06/2019 17:08

There isn't anyone sweet kitty. Diane Abbott? Shock Tom Watson? Shock Emily Thornberry? ShockShockShock

Alsohuman · 11/06/2019 17:52

Emily Thornberry would be bloody brilliant.

tobee · 11/06/2019 18:03

If I was next Tory leader/prime minister I'd be delighted to have a general election and then lose it so someone else could deal with the current shit situation.

jemihap · 11/06/2019 18:05

With hindsight TM's snap election is now looking quite a shrewd move... The tories are even more unpopular now than they were then so it's bought them some breathing space.

endlesslyrepeating · 11/06/2019 18:09

I reckon an election soon as new Tory leader won’t have the numbers to win a no confidence vote and it’ll be like the euro elections but less of a swing away from lab/con.

I can’t see labour winning as they still are saying they’ll try and get a better Brexit deal and put it to a confirmatory referendum, it will continue to lose them support to Lib Dems.

Lib Dems have said only coalition with clear remain parties so would only join labour if they came out for a referendum to remain.

HeresMe · 11/06/2019 18:15

There shouldn't be a general election this year we had one in 2015 and 2017, the public are getting sick of voting in GE, you get people who say well I didn't vote for this prime minister well you don't vote for a prime minister in this country you vote for a party.

The Tories Wont want to risk calling a election.

Labour ell Jeremy Corbyn should have gone in 2017 after he lost. As lot of Labour party people misunderstand support from party members as support from the electorate. When most parties support in elections comes from people who aren't members of any party.

familycourtq · 11/06/2019 18:34

No chance of an election. The Tories are great at two things - ruining the country and blaming everyone else, and remaining in power at all costs. Even Tory MPs who hate whatever loony they elect as next leader won’t vote to topple the party in a confidence vote - they are a tribe.
