What goes on in teenagers brains?

I mean that's a general conundrum isn't it? But the thing I'm just utterly bemused by is coats- out more specifically the lack of them!

I often wonder why you see so many secondary school kids with no coats when it rains on a school day, but today is just ridiculous. It's chucking it down, has been all night (so they haven't just been caught out by unexpected showers), there are huge puddles right across the roads and pavements so impossible to avoid- yet just done the school run with my primary kids and all but ONE of the secondary kids we passed are without coats!

Their uniforms must be soaked through, their hair is drenched and dripping...

What on earth goes through their minds?

dd1 doesn't wear one because it doesn't fit in her locker and she isn't allowed to wear it in school. She is wearing a shirt, jumper and a blazer though.

lavenderbluedilly · 11/06/2019 08:28

Mine would rather get soaked than wear a coat! We went to an outdoor concert recently and he insisted on wearing a denim jacket, nothing waterproof. I remember being the same at that age - god knows why.

bruffin · 11/06/2019 08:28

Mine came out at £698.
Ds pays us £50 a week just going up to £55, he is saving up for a deposit to move out early next year.
He would never afford to move out if we charged him £700

bruffin · 11/06/2019 08:29

Wrong thread

MrsMozartMkII · 11/06/2019 08:30

Nothing.

And everything.

All at once.

And for some reason it's never been cool to wear at coat when being a teen.

Belledan1 · 11/06/2019 08:37

My son today who is a preteen but at high sch refused to wear a coat. Same reason 're carrying it about but I think it's because I told him to and likes to be awkward !

ceirrno · 11/06/2019 08:38

Always used to wear when when I was at secondary, just a lightweight waterproof that can be readily put away is all that's needed. Even an umbrella would be better than nothing.

feathermucker · 11/06/2019 08:39

My 12 year old DS hates wearing coats and always has. He's growing rapidly at present and has outgrown the one he reluctantly accepted from a friend. I've tried light waterproof coats too, but to no avail. He takes it off and puts it in his bag.

He will wrap up in the winter because he hates being cold, but anything else doesn't seem to bother him.

bluebell34567 · 11/06/2019 08:41

they have no places to put at school, which is weird. they dont want to carry it around.
also, they want to look cool, i think.

BelulahBlanca · 11/06/2019 08:43

Or others who insist on wearing puffa jackets in sweltering heat.

AngelOfDeathNix · 11/06/2019 08:45

Mine is the same, she has an umbrella in her school bag, but forgot to use it! Also, she left for school saying she needs to talk to us later about something.......really helpful there, my mind is on overdrive for the day now!

DontCallMeBaby · 11/06/2019 08:48

Lockers, coolness as mentioned. I know DD’s locker is outside so I can imagine how grim a wet coat would be by the end of the day. Coats over blazers aren’t comfy either, I hate wearing a coat over a blazer myself.

DD has taken an umbrella today, with good grace but only after I suggested it. She was just about to step out into the pouring rain, even the fact her friend was unfurling the BRIGHTEST yellow umbrella you’ve ever seen didn’t prompt her.

ceirrno · 11/06/2019 08:50

Oh @AngelOfDeathNix , hope everything's ok x

Manumanadoodoodadoo · 11/06/2019 08:54

angel bet it's nothing much. Hope u don't spend too much time thinking about prob just so you'll remind them to ask about it later! Smile As for coats - mine are the same. I do 't push it now. At least a jumper was included in the mix this morning. Think its just not cool to wear one when yr mates arent. I don't stress over it now. The worst that will hapoen is that they get a cold at least it's not mid-winter! Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/06/2019 08:54

No place to store during the day, luckily we are very close to the school so he never gets that wet. I do find it daft though.

angieloumc · 11/06/2019 08:55

My DD who's 14 always wears a coat if rain is forecast. She couldn't bear to ruin the hair and eyebrows she has spent hours on 😂

ChristmasFluff · 11/06/2019 08:56

I remember being a teenager really well. Coats have never been cool - except certain ones, that I would never have been allowed (leather jacket or crombie when I was young). So I didn't wear a coat.

One day your teen will find the equivalent of what for me was the same raincoat as David Sylvian. They will then refuse to remove it even when it is clearly falling to bits due to being 'vintage' (jumble). You will make them walk five steps behind you out of embarrassment. They won't care.

ginghamtablecloths · 11/06/2019 08:57

I think they want to look 'cool' and coats are just not 'where it's at' to use 1960's parlance. I agree with you totally OP. Do they even possess coats? Do their parents have a battle with them each morning, or have they given up? You see young girls at bus stops in strappy tops in the evening in all weathers. We were all young and daft once. Perhaps the only answer is for a designer to come out with a coat which becomes all the rage and then they'll wear it.

Malibucyprus · 11/06/2019 08:57

They’re a strange bunch! Won’t wear a coat, and refuse to use an umbrella.

Then text me after their 40 minute walk, saying they’re cold and wet and their hair is all frizzy 🙄

MeltedCrayons · 11/06/2019 08:59

My ds will take it, but carry it. Or if it is really chucking it down will walk with the hood hanging of this head 🙄🤔

BlackCatsRock · 11/06/2019 09:02

No chance of my 12 year old son wearing a coat, even in winter. He'd prefer to get soaked than have to carry a coat around all day.

kimlo · 11/06/2019 09:13

no room even for an umbrella in the locker. All books have to be kept in there for the day, bags aren't allowed in the school they have to be in the locker. Books are taken out just before the lesson and the last ones put back.

They are also only allowed to remove the blazer in the heat if the teacher says so and then they have to be put back on to go to the next lesson.

The school likes to have rules for everything. Dd wears a coat when not in school.

MatildaTheCat · 11/06/2019 09:15

Angst. Not much space for rational thought.

Atalune · 11/06/2019 09:19

Schools don’t have anyplace to store them and so you’re left carrying all day. It’s crazy, just a really dumb culture of no coats.

I wore my coat, carried and put it on the back of my chair in school in Scotland. Everyone did. Except in science. Coats were on pegs outside for science classes.

OhMsBeliever · 11/06/2019 09:41

My teenagers have always worn coats. It must be a sign of my superior parenting. Wink

Actually, they don't really care about looking cool, and there's no school rules about coats except not wearing them in the school.

They usually check the weather forecast in the morning - far better than me!
