What goes on in teenagers brains?

I mean that's a general conundrum isn't it? But the thing I'm just utterly bemused by is coats- out more specifically the lack of them!

I often wonder why you see so many secondary school kids with no coats when it rains on a school day, but today is just ridiculous. It's chucking it down, has been all night (so they haven't just been caught out by unexpected showers), there are huge puddles right across the roads and pavements so impossible to avoid- yet just done the school run with my primary kids and all but ONE of the secondary kids we passed are without coats!

Their uniforms must be soaked through, their hair is drenched and dripping...

What on earth goes through their minds?

I drove my son to school this morning because it was lashing down and he has his maths GCSE. I couldn't believe how many other year 11's were walking to school with no coats or umbrellas. They are all wearing their leavers hoodies now instead of their blazers, they will be soaked. It must be harder to concentrate on your exam when you are soaking wet.

FishCanFly · 11/06/2019 14:23

I still hate wearing coats

Mine have coats but they have to take them off before they enter the school building which has no cover Hmm- and then carry them around becuase one doesn't have a locker and other one can't access the locker until later in the day.

PookieDo · 11/06/2019 14:40

They don’t have lockers not allowed to wear them and have to carry them
They also have a full back of heavy books this is why they often won’t
But mine have now started to wear coats as they get older

BlackPrism · 11/06/2019 14:42

Well annoying having to drag it round a stuffy school cos you have no locker and can't wear it.
I know I rarely wore one - also because other teens are thieves - still mad about my purple Nike's 12 years laterAngry

BlackPrism · 11/06/2019 14:42

Also just realised I'm not wearing one today 😂 the space between my home and the bus stop is minimal and I'm always sweltering.

TheCatDidSay · 11/06/2019 14:55

Teenagers from the start of time have refused coats.
Nowhere to put them at school, just something extra to carry, don’t feel the cold and it’s not exactly cool to be wearing a coat as a teen.

ceirrno · 11/06/2019 15:28

As I said before, we wore coats- and it definitely wasn't THAT long ago... Lol

My eldest doesn't understand the others either. She wears a coat, it folds up either into her bag or locker with no issues.

No lockers at dds school so along with her huge school bag, pack up and pe kit the last thing she wants is a coat.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/06/2019 18:04

I remember never seeming to feel the cold when I was young. I’m the opposite now!

PenguinsRabbits · 11/06/2019 18:12

They want to look cool but its apparently not called cool as that word was last used in the 1970s according to DD.

Largely its phone messages, clothes shopping, phone messages, how is my hair, phone messages, Mum can you just pay for this, phone messages, I'm not hungry, then phone messages and can I get a pot noodle in DDs brain. Phone messages are to do with various school dramas or pets.

ceirrno · 12/06/2019 00:06

@PenguinsRabbits that sounds awfully familiar...

DS 14 wore a coat today. Well a black cagoul type that he no doubt stuffed in his bag once he was round the corner from school

justanswerthephone · 12/06/2019 00:10

I'm in my 40's and still don't wear a coat in the rain, or any other time really. Getting wet has never bothered me. In fact I really quite like it

TreacherousPissFlap · 12/06/2019 00:25

It's bonkers isn't it? DS doesn't even own a coat (well he has a ski jacket for outdoor stuff, just not for being outdoors IYSWIM?)

The other thing is girls and that silly hooky arm thing they do with their impractical bags. What on earth is wrong with a nice sensible rucksack?!

DilysMoon · 12/06/2019 00:29

Round here the high school boys all seem to wear coats but the girls don't Confused. They don't have lockers and have to cart them round all day.

Charles11 · 12/06/2019 00:36

My ds school does have lockers but kids shove chewing gum in the locks and padlocks so no one can use them.
They have to carry everything they need for that day. I really feel for my ds on the day he has pe, food tech, other lessons and it’s raining so he needs a coat plus indoor trainers and outdoor football boots.
Why would he want to carry a coat as well?

Madein1995 · 12/06/2019 03:16

I really don't understand the 'coats aren't cool' argument. All my year in school wore coats. Nice ones from river island etc or maybe a hoodie. No need for boring ones. I'm only 24 too so not that out of touch, left school at 18.

The 'no lockers' argument I think is only really understandable if you're coming from a place of previously having them. You can't miss what you've not had. We didn't have lockers - simply had our books etc in our bags (rucksack or over shoulder bag) and if it wasn't boiling inside wore coat when walking between lessons. Or we carried it. We were hardly bogged down by stuff.

Mind it depends what kids take I guess. If your child plays an instrument at lunch, has rugby after school and has elected to take food technology and art GCSE then I can see how they'd have more stuff to cart about than someone who does history GCSE and who only plays rugby after school. The former isn't every teenager surely? There's only 5 lessons a day - not every day can be a mix of music, art, food tech?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 12/06/2019 07:21

We had uniform puffa jackets as our school coats in senior school, and everyone wore them, and/or the school fleece! We had decent sized lockers to put them in though. I am very, very grateful in retrospect!

ooooohbetty · 12/06/2019 07:24

Because it's rebellion. In their minds it's Grown ups wear coats and they want us to wear coats so we're not going to. Even if we're freezing or soaking.
