To think no adult kids would agree to pay this!

Just found this 'how much rent could you charge your kids' calculator! www.comparethemarket.com/home-insurance/content/pa-rental/ - they suggested my cuckoo-back-in-the-nest stepson should be paying us £593.80 a month. What are your views?

Ye Gods. My DC were all encouraged to leave home and live independently. I fear that may have been a shortsighted move on my part.

Namechangeishard · 11/06/2019 18:53

£599 which is actually more than our mortgage Grin

jay55 · 11/06/2019 19:34

The amount it suggests for my postcode for gas and electric is three times what I actually pay for me. The theoretical returning child would be far better off in a houseshare.

katewhinesalot · 11/06/2019 19:49

I like it. I like it a lot. Now just have to persuade my adult children...

BarbedBloom · 11/06/2019 19:54

£570 a month. I pay quite a bit less for a one bedroom place with most bills included. I would rather pay more and have privacy anyway.

SushiGo · 11/06/2019 19:55

£611!

The gas and electric were also really high, not 1/5 (as it would be in our house) of what the bills are. It would be good to include Council Tax too, as its a bigger bill.

I suppose it could be useful for negotiating an actually fair rate of if you have adult kids complaining about having to pay anything at all, or very small amounts.

namechangechanger · 11/06/2019 19:58

£595.84 it gave for mine. Our mortgage is only £310 a month 😂😂

I agree it can often be a very difficult calculation for parents with adult children on benefits if they go out of full time education but don’t manage to get a job. And of course in a real life scenario the adult child would not get housing costs at all because they would be renting from a close relative.

sashh · 12/06/2019 06:46

£521.32

It's way off, it would have the adult child paying most of the rent and utilities.

rosedream · 12/06/2019 06:55

It's rubbish you can rent a two bed house over a hundred pound cheaper than the calculator says for a room here.

sqirrelfriends · 12/06/2019 08:38

Daily fail has got a story on this now.

Apparently trawling Mumsnet counts as journalism now.

singymummy · 12/06/2019 08:45

Apparently we should of been paying £752 when we lived at home!!!
I barely even earn that much

cherryblossomgin · 12/06/2019 08:50

I checked my Mums and it would be 522. I would happily pay that now but when I last lived at home about 10 years ago I paid 50 a week which was half my wage.

Bishalisha · 12/06/2019 08:51

£721 😂 the rent on my housing association house on the next road is £780, I’ll suck up the extra £59 quid 😂

Ladymargarethall · 12/06/2019 09:35

DD found a house share for £611. I' m thinking I might charge a bit more.😉

Waveysnail · 12/06/2019 09:54

Depends I'd say £50 a week for room. Then £30 or so week if supplying food. Then a percentage of gas, electric, council tax, broadband etc

Oneminuteandthenallgone · 12/06/2019 10:03

Mine is 565.57, that wouldn't cover 25% of the actual expenses which would be closer to £1500

Aurea · 12/06/2019 12:11

Mine's £688. Hmm

Fabulousdahlink · 12/06/2019 17:36

I think if you are an Adult living in your parents home, and you are working- you should be paying rent and a share of the bills.

I'm a soon to be divorced mum of two and we are moving in with my mum for a few weeks between house moves.

I've also known some parents ( who dont need the money for mortgage or bills) to save this money and hand it back as a flat deposit for aforementioned adult offspring !

SnuggyBuggy · 12/06/2019 17:38

God forbid parents might want to see their DC eventually save up for a place of their own

stephi81 · 12/06/2019 17:47

When I had to move back home to my parents with a 2 year old after the break up of my relationship with her dad, my dad charged me £250 a month, but then when I eventually bought my flat a year or so later he gave me it all back to help furnish it. I have the best parents!

AnotherWickedWitch · 12/06/2019 17:48

99p pm? I think something has gone wrong with the calculator 🤣

To think no adult kids would agree to pay this!
Rosejasmine · 12/06/2019 17:49

If he can afford it, he should pay it - or pay some contribution if not earning mch. And do his fair share of cleaning etc too. If he's a student and not earning then maybe not.

AnotherWickedWitch

AnotherWickedWitch · 12/06/2019 17:54
