Just in case one fancied a change? Grin

Mumsnet seems really good for talking about current affairs and everyday issues. It's super active, the trending box is useful for quickly finding interesting threads. Somebody told me to try Reddit and I just couldn't get along with the layout. Seemed difficult to find threads, too many subreddits and stuff, threads that looked like threads but were actually just pictures and videos? Maybe I just wasn't smart enough.

But is there anywhere as good as (or maybe even... better!?) than mumsnet? For constant activity, subject matter and ease of use?

if you can find the right sort of interest group(s) on reddit, it's great. But there are so damn many you may never find the place you fit.

I'm on a particular FB group that's pretty great, as well as a ton which are not so great. Reddit is a bit like that.

RiversDisguise · 11/06/2019 04:45

I lile Reddit but the sensibility of the site overall is a bit one-note, woke and American. Obama is a god, Trump is Satan, Bruce Jenner is the bestest woman ever born, lots of people pretending to be black or mixed race then outing themselves with vanity posts in other subs. Grin maybe not a million miles from Mumsnet now I come to think of it.

Btw you know how Mumsnet's feminist boards are a rare oasis of gender critical discussion on the internet? The reddit sub r/fatlogic is the same, fighting body positivity / the promotion of obesity. It's one of my favourite places on the internet as it really helped me discard a lot of nonsensical ideas about food and weight I had entertained all my life.

NotJustACigar · 11/06/2019 05:16

Ask Metafilter is good for getting advice except they think being gender critical is a cardinal sin. Metafilter itself is sometimes interesting.

I'm another one who loved Handbag. I grieved for months when it closed, so many posters on there that I wonder what happened to them all.

I was then on a site for forces families and partners. That was good but had very small numbers. It got to the point there were only four regular posters and it closed last year.

HermioneMakepeace · 11/06/2019 05:54

I miss Handbag 😢. The Talk section was really active. I made loads of friends who I met in real life. They changed the format and everybody left.

I'm wondering if here is something similar for young men - 20-35?

bunslinger · 11/06/2019 05:54

The forums on urban75 are pretty great, especially if you're an ageing Marxist. No 1000-post limit so the threads get amazingly long.

wafflyversatile · 11/06/2019 05:59

Another one who failed to be able to navigate reddit.

wafflyversatile · 11/06/2019 06:00

Facebook killed a lot of forums. A double shame because Facebook does such an awful job of enabling discussion like threads do.

EL2019 · 11/06/2019 06:05

In terms of funtionality, Ravelry is hands down the best discussion forum. Threads post in order, but you can see who has replied to who and follow sub discussions with a thread really easily. And it remembers where you are in a thread so you can go directly to where your new posts start.

And not all the discussion groups are about knitting!

Actually that reminds me that the subreddit r/loseit is amazing for weight loss inspiration as many of the members are americans who have 100 lbs+ to lose and they all seem to just do calories in vs calories out, so nothing crazy.

Some other favourite subreddit for starters :

R/casualconversation is good for just shooting the breeze.

I'm wondering if here is something similar for young men - 20-35?
R/trollychromasome is a fun place for guys with an irreverent sense of humour at themselves who want empathy from other guys.

R/trollxchromasome is the same for women and its very amusing.

R/flexibility is amazing for people who want to just stretch the shit out of themselves without wanting to do yoga.

R/askreddit is huge and gets thousands of responses.

R/oddlysatisfying, r/mildlyinteresting, r/showerthoughts and r/todayIlearned are all worth a look.
