AIBU to dye my hair bright red?

Early 30's, 3 kids and I've been varying shades of blonde, coppery ginger and brown for years. I have the summer off for the rest of leave before starting back in a very corporate environment when I intend to go back to a 'natural' colour.

DH says go for it (it being a bright semi permanent pillarbox red that I know will be a bitch to maintain). Family and friends say I'm too old to pull it off.

So what do you think? Go bright red for a month or so before going back a red based brown? I've been all colours from pink to green to blue in my twenties but not in recent years. Am I too 'old'?

Not all at the same time. The brown, ginger and blonde have been different times. Currently a very light ginger.

I loved my hair when it was bright red and I was also in my early 30s you need your roots doing quite a lot so it's a bit high maintenance sometimes

MaelstromOfLunacy · 09/06/2019 21:16

Do it! I’m 31 with bright red very long hair, it’s been this way since I was 16 and I love it. Still gets lots of compliments too 😊 go for it.

livin · 09/06/2019 21:31

This is the kind of enthusiasm I wanted from my friends and family! They are such disappointments.

Dye is arriving tomorrow/Tuesday. I am excited but I can't lie, a bit apprehensive. It's such a bold choice!

Age has sweet FA to do with it, your family are just joy thieves! Go for it.
I have to have a 'normal' colour for work, but I retire in a couple of years and I'm going to go through the whole damn rainbow when I do. Nobody's going to stop this hells granny!!!

IsabellaLinton · 09/06/2019 21:37

I wouldn’t. It took me years to get the red out of my hair and had to have it bleached out in the end. Very painful.

Jfw82 · 09/06/2019 21:39

If you're not bleaching to do it yeh go for it! Wish I had the guts!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/06/2019 21:39

I'm 40, work in a professional regulatory role, and have bright pillar box red hair. It is a pig to maintain, it washes out really quickly, but I love it and DH also adored it.

MitziK · 09/06/2019 21:41

Don't put permanent on top of faded semi perm colours.

The chemical reaction can be spectacular - in terms of 'look how the hair melts' spectacular.

But no, you aren't too old at all. Enjoy it; just be careful with what you replace it with.

TheHobbitMum · 09/06/2019 21:41

Absolutely go for it! I am bright vivid purple, almost 40yrs old, 4 DC and a supermarket deputy manager. You are never too old for funky hair Grin

Laiste · 09/06/2019 21:42

I don't think your concern should be about your age. Everyone of all ages have all different colours these days.

I would worry about shifting the red afterwards. Are you thinking of just bunging a dark brown over it at the end? If so make sure it's a proper ashy brown without any warm tones. Otherwise that red (weak annoying gingery pink by then) will not shift!

sheshootssheimplores · 09/06/2019 21:44

The problem with these very bright colours is the maintenance. My local salon seems to specialise in rainbow hair colours. I see their work through my Facebook newsfeed regularly. When the colour is fresh it looks lovely. However I see some of the people a week later and it looks terrible. Faded and lifeless. So that would probably put me off.

WhiteLightTrainWreck · 09/06/2019 21:44

Do it!!! Red is such a fun colour!!
Just be careful with the next colour because depending how it takes to your hair, you may find it pushes the next colour off even if it has faded some, but you'd likely a gorgeous brunette (if you choose to go back to brunette) with red tones pushing through.

Nomorechickens · 09/06/2019 21:48

Go for it! I would love to be able to dye my hair red/purple but I have the wrong colouring, and I'm not brave enough to go blue/turquoise

scoobyd2 · 09/06/2019 21:50

Too old???! I went bright red in my mid 40's, been this colour about 6 years, wouldn't be any other colour now. It fades with time, so it goes from bright red down to copper; but I've found Batiste is my friend so I can get away with washing it every 3rd day which helps maintain the colour. But I love my red hair, and total strangers assume it's natural (mine's done by my hairdresser, I wouldn't risk a DIY job Grin ). I work in a corporate environment, no-one bats an eyelid (but then it's mainly blokes, they never notice hair..)

eBae · 09/06/2019 21:51

Do it. I recommend Manic Panic - Vampire Red.

MadamMMA · 09/06/2019 21:51

I’ve had pink, purple, silver, red and accidentally blue (notcall at the same time) go for it

pinkrockinghorse · 09/06/2019 21:54

Do it. I have pink ends on my hair and I actually really like it as it fades - it looks quite autumnal. I am early 30s and have two kids.

underthebridgedowntown · 09/06/2019 21:54

Do it, I've just had the under layer of my hair re-bleached, and gone for bright pink this time, went for blue last time. I'm 33, and senior management in the public sector - definitely not too old, only did it for the first time last year!

livin · 09/06/2019 22:31

I'm a light ginger underneath a semi permanent orange right now. Planning on using La Riche Directions in Pillarbox Red to do it once the orange has faded back to light and maintaining with a little semi dye mixed with conditioner every wash as that's what I've done with all of my colours. Won't use permanent red as the semi permanent stains enough.

Planning on going over it with an ash brown first and then a week later a dark blackish cool toned brown come the end of August. I stripped red out a few years to go blonde (absolute fucking hell - seriously) but I don't plan to go lighter.

livin · 09/06/2019 22:32

My hair is very thick and dry so I can get away with only washing it once per week if I use dry shampoo on day 3 and day 5. Only issue is making sure I don't get caught in the rain with semi permanent or it's going to look like a murder scene Grin

SospanFrangipan · 09/06/2019 23:02

Do it! I'm 34, have been pillar box red for 10 years, recently decided to go purple! I love it, and smile every time I see it in the mirror!

Hearthside · 10/06/2019 09:10

I am in my 40's and i dye my hair not bright red but really really dark different to my natural and i love it and get loads of compliments .Some people said oh you too old you won't be able to carry it off but i did and they had to eat their words 😁so i say go for it .

scarletslass · 10/06/2019 10:29

Do it! I'm in 40,have short dark hair with la Roche poppy or fire Red balayage ends, I love it and get sooo many complements. I colour it every week or so at home in between salon visits, but it still looks good when it's faded. Agree the bathroom does look like a murder scene at times though!

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 10/06/2019 10:33

Go for it! I gave up red last year and miss it.
