Looking for inspiration for a present for a newborn.

OP posts:

Has the baby been born yet? If not then generally I think people appreciate things that help in the early days. They're bound to get loads of clothes and toys from everyone else. You might do well along the lines of things like pre-made easy meals for the parents so they dont have to think about cooking, offering to clean their house or just lots and lots of baby supplies.

Nothing really. Pretty much everything was used and then went to charity shop. Help is much more appreciated than stuff!

Astrid0208 · 09/06/2019 19:13

I'm not sure about treasured but I think the best thing was a basket of medicines which was full of stuff you didn't know I needed until I needed it iykwim:
Snufflebabe
Metanium
Calpol
Colic meds

Elletine · 09/06/2019 19:16

The boring stuff was most appreciated by me - tubs and tubs of sudocrem, size 2 and 1 nappies, sponges, baby wipes. Not fun things to gift but they save so much money, time and "I forgot the " after the weekly shop.

Or a Ewan the dream sheep. He's brilliant.

Takeaway vouchers and the menu in a card!

The handmade things people made for her: a quilt, blanket, teddy bear. Amazed by my friends' talent and creativity!

Pleasebequietnow · 09/06/2019 19:18

I was given a voucher to get imprints of DD’s hands and feet done. I thought it was lovely but didn’t really look at them for a couple of years, and then found them again last year. DD was fascinated to see how she’s grown and, now she’s 7, I’m so glad we got it done.

A memory box for her baby things or things with her name on

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 09/06/2019 19:20

In my little memory box I have his hospital tag, the hat they put on after birth, his first outfit, a parking ticket from the hospital and some photos. Those are the things you treasure. Perhaps you could give a memory box and they can fill it.

InterchangeableEmma · 09/06/2019 19:21

My MIL gave us a quartz sphere on a stand when DD was born. A cristal ball, in fact. It's my MIL is not woo and it is beautiful but I was somewhat confused. I still don't understand her thinking but 11 years on it's just as beautiful as it was then

Handmade gifts and also full sized personalised towels - really lovely quality ones that my children still love using now (ages 6 and 4).

I also liked quality blankets.

HoneyWheeler · 09/06/2019 19:24

We got a hello fresh box delivered from my OH's work and it genuinely lit me up inside I was so pleased- it seemed so thoughtful!

Cantthinkofausername1990 · 09/06/2019 19:24

My sister got my ds a really soft teddy/blanket that was personalised with his name and date of birth. It was so soft that ds loved it and had it when falling asleep for his first few years. It will be kept for life

jollyohh · 09/06/2019 19:28

A blanket with my DC's name on. Practical, used it loads, she now plays with it for her 'babies'. Lovely gift.

hidinginthenightgarden · 09/06/2019 19:28

nappies! You go through so many of the damn things!!!

sunday38 · 09/06/2019 19:39

Most useful and appreciated gifts: Good quality, large muslin cloths. Some fancy brownies delivered by post. A keepsake/memory box.

Things l charity shopped as had multiples given: Several teddies. Blankets. China money boxes/plates/cups. Most things with "Born in 2017" on.

BertieBotts · 09/06/2019 19:39

Favourite things were the things people picked off our amazon list that we had chosen Blush

I think the best non-coached gifts have been:

Nice books
Pretty muslin cloths
A rainbow blanket (but people always give blankets)

Random things that were good/I wouldn't have thought of for a newborn were a rain maker and a HABA roly poly clown. I think any of this range would have worked - was the first thing he really liked to look at and then reach to. The gentle wobble and clonking sound and the nice clear smiling face were important. He does like the hat for grabbing, but it's not that important.

gatsby2019 · 09/06/2019 19:41

A wee tesco Teddy bear, he still uses it at 10

SwingoutSisterSledge · 09/06/2019 19:43

My son was born at the end of November a friend bought him a Christmas Tree Bauble . It's 18 years old now and has pride of place on my tree bringing back lovely memories of when he was little.

Daffodil2018 · 09/06/2019 19:46

My favourite present was a pretty patterned muslin. The most useful was a tube of Lansinoh and some Medela nipple shields!!

Rarfy · 09/06/2019 19:47

A friends dm made some beautiful hunting with babies name on for her bedroom. It was easily one of my favourite gifts along with a crocheted bunny with her name, dob and birth weight on. Both beautiful. Our schnugl bath was a good gift too and the best thing I bought hands-down was the tuppence and crumble star wrap.

Rarfy · 09/06/2019 19:48

Sorry - bunting.

Fraxion · 09/06/2019 19:55

the best thing I bought hands-down was the tuppence and crumble star wrap.

That's what we give for new baby gifts...every time. Wish they had been around when my daughter was a baby, they are fantastic.

OrdinaryGirl · 09/06/2019 20:04

A Gap sleepsuit with a single diagonal zip. Just amazing for night time nappy changes - avoids NPRS (Nocturnal Popper Rage Syndrome).

Charlie Bigham ready meals - I was sobbingly grateful.

Naice biscuits for me to eat offer round to visitors.

The gifts I most appreciated were the ones for me rather than DS1. Although the copy of A Bit Lost and his Jellycat bunny are still absolutely treasured. Goodnight Moon usually goes down well too, even though the colours are garish and the story is random, it's really hypnotic and all my boys have loved it.
