To ask for audio book recommendations

Have recently discovered the joy of audiobooks as a way of 'reading' when I don't have time to sit down with a book.

I have Audible (I'm sure equally good alternatives exist) and am looking for recommendations for holiday time.

So far I've listened to:

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - Gail Honeyman
Mythos - Stephen Fry
Heroes: Mortals and Monsters - Stephen Fry
12 Rules for Life - Jordan Peterson
Fire and Fury - Michael Wolff
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living - Dale Carnegie
The Chimp Paradox - Steven Peters

Lately I've been listening to more self help style books (stressful time) but would like some fiction or just some really good book recommendations for holiday time coming up. Nothing too heavy or depressing.

Circe by madeline Miller, I bloody loved it.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 07/06/2019 19:52

American gods by Neil gaimen, or stardust by him too.
I've listened to almost all the books on your lots and really enjoyed them so am going to download the rest of the books now too!

Anything by Bill Bryson.
Autobiographies of Stephen Fry, Rob Brydon, Lee Evans, Michelle Obama

ILoveEurovision · 07/06/2019 19:56

Jon Ronson. My favourite is "So You've Been Publicly Shamed" but he also has a couple of free audio show series. He's the best thing on Audible.

MissFenella · 07/06/2019 20:01

Bruno chief of police series by Martin Walker
Falco series by Lindsey Davis and then the Flavia Albia series by the same
Shardlake series by CJ Samson
Detective Lavender by Karen Charlton
Bosh series by Michael Connelly
Lewis island series by Peter May
Any David Sedaris

Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield. I just loved it! Also liked The Party by Elizabeth Day and My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.

Do you subscribe to the daily deal emails from audible? They had some really good titles on offer recently for £1.99 or £2.99

MrsPinkCup · 07/06/2019 20:03

I'm listening to 11/22/63 by Stephen King and it's so good.

Vivavivienne · 07/06/2019 20:08

Lee Child books, the ones that have Jack Reacher in, translate well to Audible.

Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks is an exception piece of literature.

GraceSlicksRabbit · 07/06/2019 20:17

May not be up your street but since you like his novels, Stephen Fry did a really good social history series called Victorian Secrets, an Audible Original I think, it was free for a while. I am also enjoying Cabin Pressure, which is a radio sitcom with Benedict Cumberbatch. (It’s about 10 years old).

Evilspiritgin · 07/06/2019 20:21

Jilly cooper score is 26 hours long, that would take up a decent part of your holiday

gabsdot45 · 07/06/2019 20:29

I recently listened to all the Harry Potter audio books. I got them from the library (Borrow box) I really enjoyed them
I've also enjoyed Agatha Christie. There are some great BBC plays
Others I've enjoyed are
Everything by Jane Austin
All the Inspector Wexford books by Ruth Rendall
All Lianne Moriarty's books, They're read by an Australian woman with a great voice.

astoldbyginger · 07/06/2019 20:31

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I'm usually a fan of dystopian novels however Will Wheaton is a great narrator.

CMOTDibbler · 07/06/2019 20:31

If you liked Mythos, then Neil Gaiman reading his Norse Mythology book is fab.

I know you said nothing heavy, but I've just finished listening to Elizabeth Moss reading the Handmaids Tale, and it was outstanding.

The free audio shows on Audible are very good

astoldbyginger · 07/06/2019 20:31

*not usually

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 07/06/2019 20:33

The Dry by Jane Harper. Really good thriller, set in Australia. Well-written too.

muminlon · 07/06/2019 20:40

Winter Dark by Alex Callister

TheInvestigator · 07/06/2019 20:42

If you like sci-fi then anything narrated by R.C. Best or Jefferson Mays.
They are both fantastic narrators. Bray read a The Martian and it's such a fantastically told story; I love it.

ShinyButtons · 07/06/2019 20:43

Born a crime by Trevor Noah. It's the only audio book I've actually looked forward to listening to.

whiskeysourpuss · 07/06/2019 20:53

Agree with PP about RC Bray - I'd listen to the phone book if such a thing still existed if he was reading it thankfully he narrates far more interesting fayre Smile

The After it Happened series was the first proper thing I got into on audible (gutted that RC isn't narrator on the latest book), also listens to Pet Sematery & The Stand by Stephen King. Currently listening to The Passage but it's hard going - very slow moving & detailed which is right for the book but I'm struggling.

Loved This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay equally side splittingly funny & heart breakingly sad at times.

Ridingthegravytrain · 07/06/2019 20:56

Just finished sphere by Michael Crichton. Was really good

MrsBush · 07/06/2019 20:57

Another vote for the Harry Potter series - all read by Stephen Fry. He's amazing

soisolated · 07/06/2019 21:15

I love Agatha Christie, Simon scarrows Cato and macro series, Ruth downies rouso book are excellent and Ariana Franklin's are really good too.

Darkcloudsandsunnydays · 07/06/2019 21:24

My last one was the five people you meet in heaven by the author. It’s a feel good fable about a worthless man in a worthless job who wasted his life.

highheelsandbobblehats · 07/06/2019 21:26

I loved Becoming by Michelle Obama.
The Other Couple was decent.
Currently listening to The Tattooist of Auschwitz which is excellent so far but probably not what you want to listen to on holiday....

Taswama · 07/06/2019 21:27

Becoming by Michelle Obama
2nd / 3rding Harry Potter
