To ask for audio book recommendations

Have recently discovered the joy of audiobooks as a way of 'reading' when I don't have time to sit down with a book.

I have Audible (I'm sure equally good alternatives exist) and am looking for recommendations for holiday time.

So far I've listened to:

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - Gail Honeyman
Mythos - Stephen Fry
Heroes: Mortals and Monsters - Stephen Fry
12 Rules for Life - Jordan Peterson
Fire and Fury - Michael Wolff
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living - Dale Carnegie
The Chimp Paradox - Steven Peters

Lately I've been listening to more self help style books (stressful time) but would like some fiction or just some really good book recommendations for holiday time coming up. Nothing too heavy or depressing.

Also recently been listening to The Owl and the Pussycat which is divine!

highheelsandbobblehats · 07/06/2019 21:28

Also, what about podcasts? My Dad Wrote A Porno is amazing.

Kay1341 · 07/06/2019 21:33

The Red Sparrow trilogy by Jason Matthews is really good, the readers are great.

GnomeDePlume · 07/06/2019 21:37

The Inspector Rebus (Ian Rankin) books are an excellent listen.

jacquesjacques · 07/06/2019 21:41

The Queen of Bloody Everything - I love all of the books on your list and adored this. It's one of those books that is an easy enough listen but will stay with you for a long time

Chickpearocker · 07/06/2019 21:44

There’s some free audio shows on audible, my favourite is west cork really had me hooked.

SkiingIsHeaven · 07/06/2019 21:49

Our local library offer free audio books.

You join the library (free) then download a free app.

Just thought I'd mention it as it saves you money.

Not all libraries do it though.

The choice isn't as good as audible but it is free.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 07/06/2019 21:53

Stephen Fry reading anything is delightful - Harry Potter (even if "Harry pocketeded it"), the complete Sherlock Holmes collection (which is incredible value for a single credit!), Hitchhiker's Guide... There's loads of fabulous stuff on there.

Cabin Pressure is also brilliant. I bloody love Arthur. And, on a completely different note, Adam Kay's book is terrific.

Also Good Omens (Terry Pratchett / Neil Gaiman) and His Dark Materials / The Book of Dust (Pulman) are excellent.

Essexgirlupnorth · 07/06/2019 21:53

Becoming by Michelle Obama definitely the best audible book I have heard recently

QueenBeee · 07/06/2019 21:57

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton was good. But I wasn't so taken with the Secret Garden.

endoflevelbaddy · 07/06/2019 21:57

The ones I've really enjoyed recently have been anything by Liane Moriarty (of Big Little Lies fame). Really liking being read to in an Aussie accent Grin

The 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared was fantastic too

misskatamari · 07/06/2019 22:03

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. It's an awesome book and just fantastic on audible. It's read by Wil Wheaton, and he does such a good job. I've read a few others narrated by him and always really enjoy them (if you like sci fi he narrates some good John Scalzi books).

The seven deaths of Evelyn hardcastle js good on audiobook as well.
The Harry potters are read by Stephen fry and are also excellent.

The scarlet city series of audible originals is also a really good listen - they're more like a play really as have different people reading the different characters and have some other sounds as back ground. Apprentice is the first if the trilogy. The synopsis didn't really make me think I'd like them but they're a great listen

MQv2 · 07/06/2019 22:06

I, Partridge

It's basically the only audio book you'll ever need

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 07/06/2019 22:06

I'm a sucker for Wil Wheaton. Clearly Ready Player One on my wish list for when my next credit comes rolling in now, cheers!

CountArthursgroupie · 07/06/2019 22:07

Middlemarch read by Juliet Stevenson is amazing, she really becomes the characters.

Crazycatlady10 · 07/06/2019 22:08

Anything read by Richard Armitage, he did the tattooist of auschwitz which someone else had mentioned but he’s a really engaging narrator. Very relaxing voice.

Notageek · 07/06/2019 22:15

Great thread, I’ve got a backlog of credits and a holiday coming up !

Becoming by Michele Obama and A life without Limits by Chrissie Wellington (world Ironman champion).

JohnsPrincess · 07/06/2019 22:20

You want to get switched over to Scribd. Same price as Audible, unlimited audiobooks

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 07/06/2019 22:20

@misskatamari which John Scalzi ones do you recommend? I bought lock in on a daily deal, and must have listen to it 20 times over and counting, I love it!

PrettyTricky · 07/06/2019 22:32

Thanks all, I'm noting these down to investigate when I finally get a chance to sit down tonight!

Love Leanne Moriarty books

The Dry by Jane Harper and her other books

Secret Life of Victorians an Audible series read by Stephen Fry which is great

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is my favorite wonderful novel and narration

QueenBeee · 08/06/2019 08:07

It's quite interesting how a voice can make or break a book for me. I have two books by the same author about the countryside, one is marvellous and I listen to it over and over if I want a relaxing listen and the other with a different reader just does not work!

QueenBeee · 08/06/2019 08:10

An alternative to audible is audiobooks, you sign up and pay monthly, I think it is 7.99, and get a book a month. Or their free books.
The local library (online) is good, is free, as has been said above, but choice is a bit limited.

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 08/06/2019 11:44

@QueenBeee somebody totally butchered a Terry pratchett book on audible that I had the misfortune to listen to recently. Today changed the meaning of the story by giving the core character an accent that wasn't suited to him and the emphasis of words made him out to be a cruel and nasty crook and he wasn't at all, it was really bizarre!

Audiobooks seems to be the same price and deal as audible but with less to choose from 😕 and audible's returns policy is SO good.
