To miss the UK

Friday night in Aus, dh and I watch HIGNFY and the Last Leg and it makes me miss the UK!

I'm glad to be away from Brexit, and close now to family, but these nights make me miss the UK.

Full disclosure, it's late Friday night here and I've had far too much gin.

Ah I’d miss the UK too. Maybe not today though as it’s peeing down with rain in June!!

arethereanyleftatall · 07/06/2019 14:29

I'm not surprised, the Uk is a marvellous place to live. I love it.

DinkyTie · 07/06/2019 14:39

It's pissing down here too but it is winter 💁

LOL, it's a bit like me watching 'Wanted Down Under' when it's a Kiwi one! I'd be murder watching that with gin on board!

ApplePieIsAmazing · 07/06/2019 14:43

You're not alone. I miss the UK too

Iamblossom · 07/06/2019 14:49

I love living in the UK. I have an Aussie passport as my Mum was Australian, and we have a massive family over there, been there many times - and have had many opportunities to emigrate, DH would have like a shot. But I would miss the seasons, the food, the cities, the countryside, the TV, the pubs, god everything.

Sorry that's not helping much is it. Flowers

DinkyTie · 07/06/2019 14:54

@Iamblossom I'm in Melbourne and we definitely have seasons here!

I miss being where it's all happening, but I'm really glad to be home. Confusing I know!

The TV in Aus is shit and we are always watching UK shows so I forget where I am some sometimes.

We watched loads of British tv when we lived there. I watched the six o clock news the next day, I missed the theme tune.

When we moved back here my dc were astonished that other people hadheard of ' Saturday Night Takeaway' etc,

araiwa · 07/06/2019 15:25

I dont

Friends and family for sure.

But i left for a reason and if anything its got worse and i have zero desire to go back

Strokethefurrywall · 07/06/2019 15:39

I missed it when I was back for 2 weeks over Easter this year.
I went running in the countryside, watched lambs being born, enjoyed beautiful weather and that lovely smell of summer in the air.

And then just when I was starting to wistfully look at Rightmove.co.uk, my parents gave me a shake and reminded me that for the other 300+ days a year, I can't run in the countryside because it's pissing with rain or is pitch black and freezing, and I'd have an hours commute from my office. Oh, and that Id have to pay tax.

That kind of slapped me out of my rose tinted wistful thinking.

But when I watch reruns of Gavin & Stacey I really do feel nostalgic!
To be fair, chances are we'll move back to uk at some point depending on where my boys settle.

LinoleumBlownapart · 07/06/2019 15:43

Nostalgia, I get that. I did love living in parts of the UK. But the thought of living in dreary suburbia in the middle of winter makes me crash down to earth pretty fast. If I had to go back, I would embrace it but I secretly hope I don't ever have to.

Ivy44 · 07/06/2019 15:44

I lived in Aus and Singapore. I was away for about 4 years.

This was in the late 2000’s and it wasn’t that easy to get UK TV. I really missed it, as you say, Aus TV is shit.

I actually missed the weather. It could get far to hot in Sydney and humid in Singapore. I missed the British humour. I missed the local foods (although I love seafood, so was quite happy eating massive prawns and barramundi). I missed Christmas, it was a bit meh in Sydney. I missed the countryside. I missed the culture - museums and galleries in Sydney were a bit crap.

Loved my time away but glad I moved back.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/06/2019 18:55

It was only when I lived in Australia for a while, that I realised how much 'soul' the Uk has. The history is everywhere. I never really noticed it till I didn't have it. I had a great time in Oz, but literally cried with relief when I came home.

cardibach · 07/06/2019 18:57

I live in the UK and I miss it. It’s not the same country it was 3 years ago.

KC225 · 07/06/2019 19:06

I'm in Sweden and I miss UK and London so much. I want to come home.

DippyDepannage · 07/06/2019 19:07

I live outside of the UK and miss it, but two weeks back in the UK reminds me why I live abroad

Honeybee85 · 07/06/2019 19:11

I am from another country then the UK and moved to the other side of the world a few months ago to be with DH.

I feel homesick quite often, I miss going out with my friends, my ‘ own’ food (hard or impossible to find here), my favourite spots in nature in my own country, being able to go outside and speak with others in my native language, hell I even miss my old supermarket.

Its getting better but I still cry over these things sometimes when I am at home, DH is at work and I feel alone.

scaryteacher · 07/06/2019 19:22

I am moving back to the UK in October and looking forward to being back in my own four walls.

I have especially missed Cornwall in spring time as one doesn't see the hedgerows here with snowdrops, daffs and primroses like we do at home.

CornShaunelly · 07/06/2019 19:28

I'm delighted to have left, although I do miss the amount of paid vacation I used to get in the UK (although that'll probably be reduced post-Brexit anyway).

Snugglepiggy · 07/06/2019 19:28

Can't go running for 300 + days because of rain .Really ?Admittedly today I walked my dogs in a downpour, but it never stops me going.Winter walks can be amazing. And if the weather is rubbish hot soup, lighting a fire or a soak in the bath soon cheer me up.
Up until the last few days we've had day after day of dry weather where we are.Yes it's unpredictable but I wouldn't swap our seasons for anything.

birdandroses · 07/06/2019 19:28

I wish I loved the UK more (am British). Some good things but I will never like our climate. It’s June, 13c and raining today :(

VeryQuaintIrene · 07/06/2019 20:41

Love the UK and come back regularly and it will always be home at a deep level, even though I've lived in the US for 25 years and no longer get all the jokes in Private Eye :(

Strokethefurrywall · 07/06/2019 22:28

Can't go running for 300 + days because of rain .Really ?

Er that's not what I said. I said I probably wouldn't be able to run the other 300 odd days because it's pitch black by the time I'd get home after my long commute, or it's pissing with rain, or it's freezing cold, or [insert reason].
It's not just the rain that would stop me running.

I live in the tropics and the rain stops me because you can't run in torrential thunderstorms.

But there's very little else that stops me other than sheer laziness...

England when the sun shines is something else. You can smell the hope in the air.
England in February when its damp, grey, cold and bleak just doesn't work for me.

redexpat · 07/06/2019 22:37

Gavin and Stacey is responsible for bouts of homesickness the world over!

Strokethefurrywall · 07/06/2019 22:39

It's the only show that makes me homesick!!
