To miss the UK

Friday night in Aus, dh and I watch HIGNFY and the Last Leg and it makes me miss the UK!

I'm glad to be away from Brexit, and close now to family, but these nights make me miss the UK.

Full disclosure, it's late Friday night here and I've had far too much gin.

I miss the UK every single day.

I miss home but have found my home country's tragic soap opera on you tube and watch it every night (I'm about 3 years behind). Hearing the cultural references, the accents, seeing the food and native flora and fauna … sigh … I'm not sure if it makes the homesickness better or worse

@Ivy44 my Aussie cousins came over for Christmas a couple of years ago and could not BELIEVE how mental over Christmas we go here in the UK. They fully embraced the whole Christmas jumper and full on madness but were a bit taken aback by it all! I felt proud, ludicrously. Grin

I came back to the UK a couple of years ago from north Europe. I hate it here.
Yes it is a pretty country, but most of us live in the human world - and that, if you are not born into money, is shit and getting worse. I agree completely with the UN's recently released final report into poverty and human rights attacks in the UK, and not at all with the government's response.

PregnantSea · 08/06/2019 11:37

I very rarely miss the UK. I still love the UK, I think it has so much charm and individuality, and I'm not surprised it's comedy panel shows that make you homesick because we do comedy like nobody else!

But... The NHS was a nightmare to work for and have to rely on as a patient, we were paying insane rent on a shite little house and had no decent chance of ever buying somewhere, the police never bothered to investigate the many burglaries and car thefts, anywhere that it's feasible to get a job is over crowded, taxes are high, wages are low, working hours are long, and oh yeah... BREXIT.

Not trying to be a dick here, like I said I do love the UK - just trying to remind OP of the reality that she's left behind!

YANBU OP, I have lived in the Med and the US but will never leave the UK again. I have settled in the English countryside and for me it’s truly the most beautiful place in the world, despite the dodgy weather. I still travel regularly but am always so happy to get home. For me, there is no place that comes close to the UK, it’s such a unique, wonderful place. Yes, it has it’s faults but so does every country. The good stuff far outweighs the flaws.

Helendee · 08/06/2019 17:03

I could never live anywhere other than the UK, my heart and soul are British to the core.

Backwoodsgirl · 08/06/2019 17:10

Really dislike the UK moved away 5 years ago. I miss family but nothing else. Don’t think I’ll ever move back

When I do go back I am reminded of all the reasons I left, expensive, overcrowded and bad air quality.

HypatiaCade · 08/06/2019 17:17

I'm moving back to Aus soon, and I know I will miss the UK after living here for well over a decade. But right now I miss my family, I miss the long summer, I miss living near the beach and I miss the laid back attitude. I can't wait....!!!!

Pimmsypimms · 08/06/2019 17:20

We were exactly the same op when we lived in Brisbane, especially watching Dr Who at Christmas, we always used to watch the British programmes (agree, Aus tv is shit!) Definitely missed HIGNFY and never mind the buzzcocks (obvs a few years ago now!) it's the dry british humour I missed!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/06/2019 17:35

We move back to the UK in two months and I've realised I can't wait. It's not the big things, it's silly things like bacon, British style Indian takeaways, browsing on book shops.
It's really easy to idealise living abroad, but most of the time it's actually really similar. It's still the daily grind of housework, school, work...

flyingspaghettimonster · 08/06/2019 17:36

I miss a lot of thinks about the UK too. I still watch escape to the country and time team and other similar shows because in my heart it makes me feel closer to home. I even forced kyself through the entire 6 seasons of Goodnight Sweetheart recently, and that show has to have been one of the lamest shows of all time.

Whilst I miss home, I don't fancy being there right now. Bad enough being stuck with Trump, Brexit would probably send me into despair.

Ivy44 · 08/06/2019 17:43

@iamblossom
It’s very tame in Aus, a few decorations in the shops, a tree in Martin Place, a bbq on Christmas Day. But that’s about it. A works Christmas Party in the run up but no markets, no gluhwein, no Christmas jumpers. It doesn’t feel like Christmas at all.

HypatiaCade · 08/06/2019 17:46

I'm going to make all of my family wear Christmas Tshirts this Christmas in Oz, even if I have to decorate them myself!
