To ask school to choose? (parking)

Aibu to ask my DD’s school to choose to alert that they must reverse park. There are no guidelines in the car park and I just feel like it’s mayhem. If we all reversed parked then it may be s bit more streamlined and time saving? Do you think they would find me weird for suggesting it ?😂😬

If people can't reverse park, they shouldn't be driving.

Rubbish. I did it as part of lessons then in my driving test. Not done it once in over 30 years consequent to obtaining my license. Never been a problem. Sure, it has inconvenienced me as at times my options have been to reverse park into a spot or keep driving and accept the next spot I can drive into will be a kilometre or so away and walk back which I accept. My choice. What’s the issue?

herculepoirot2 · 07/06/2019 12:44

I’m not very good at reverse parking at all. We don’t have a drive so I rarely need to do it.

Carpark1 · 07/06/2019 12:47

@Sleepyblueocean there’s no need to take out a buggy for the school drop off Confused

Surely everyone should be reversing into a space especially in a school car park.

The lack of visibility when trying to reverse back out is worrisome!

CripsSandwiches · 07/06/2019 12:48

Reverse parking is one of the possible manoeuvres on the test. When I did it a few years ago it was either parallel park, 3 point turn or reverse park in a bay. However as long as you do good observation they allow you to take your time and they don't get you to do it between two cars. It is (at least now) expected that you are capable of reverse parking when you get a driving licence. I don't think not being able to do it is a good argument against a policy where you have to reverse park for safety reasons (where as having to get a SN buggy out of the boot is).

Carpark1 · 07/06/2019 12:49

@JacquesHammer my point exactly, I think I’ll approach the head today 🤔

Russell19 · 07/06/2019 12:49

@carpark1 of course people need to get buggies out on the school run if they have younger toddlers in the car with them. They can't just leave their kids/babies in the car!

Sleepyblueocean · 07/06/2019 12:50

Carpark1 an sn buggy is the equivalent of a wheelchair so someone who has one may need to take it out. I did it sometimes when my child was in mainstream.

Carpark1 · 07/06/2019 12:53

@Russell19 NO ONE at our school leaves the car at all really 😬 they literally get out, open the door? Put on kids coats and hand them their bags and watch the kids walk in the gate. There is never a need to take in a buggy. I have seen mums carry in a younger dc I their arms if they are going in for some reason.

CripsSandwiches · 07/06/2019 12:53

Unless it's a huge school surely most parents don't get a buggy out of the car just to pop their kids in the classroom (apart from in the case of disabilities). Maybe some schools are huge but I've never seen anyone do this at my DC's school.

Carpark1 · 07/06/2019 12:53

@Sleepyblueocean there are separate disabled car parking spots.

The Headteacher is going to love you!

As if they don't have enough issues with the "mayhem" in the car park already.
Now I bright spark is suggesting they offer parents some advice on their driving!
Given the responses on this thread alone, I'd suggest the Head would be on a suicide mission!

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 07/06/2019 12:56

I had to reverse park as part of my test, when we arrived back at the testing centre car park. I hate doing it but I can do it

Russell19 · 07/06/2019 12:56

Parents at our school are expected to walk their child to the classroom door. They cannot just leave a child at the gate but it is a bigger school and the younger children would have to walk all around the back of school to get to their classroom door.

I appreciate you are talking about your specific school but not all schools are like yours so no need to be blunt or rude.

Macca84 · 07/06/2019 12:57

Where I work (massive site with 1000s of people), it's mandatory to reverse park. Anyone who doesn't gets a warning and if persistently parking incorrectly it's a disciplinary. Of course people should be able to reverse park - not sure how some people can't manage it tbh, it's basic driving.

Sirzy · 07/06/2019 12:57

I do agree it makes much more sense to reverse park, especially in a school car park but it will never happen!

Ds uses a wheelchair and I still reverse park and have never had an issue doing so personally. Much easier then trying to put it together at the road end too

Surely if you can’t do everything you might have to do while in control of a lethal bit of machinery you shouldn’t be driving it?!

^ this

How very entitled to think you are not fully capable to safely drive but that's not a problem. Confused

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 07/06/2019 12:58

You have a school car park???

Sexnotgender · 07/06/2019 13:00

I’m shocked people can’t reverse parkConfused for those that say they can’t why is that?
I kind of agree if you can’t park you really shouldn’t be driving.

Carpark1 · 07/06/2019 13:00

@Russell19 hence why my question is about my DD’s car park, I’m not asking what your school does. Not being rude but telling what your school rules are is pointless, here the parents drop the children to the yard, the school isn’t even open when I drop my dd. They open the door at 9.00. The head teacher or another teacher comes out at 8.50ish. The children play and then they line up to go inside.

PeoniesarePink · 07/06/2019 13:00

I have to do the school drop off and collect for my grandchildren sometimes, and the general level of parking ability absolutely horrifies me. How some of them passed a test is beyond me.

I'm in the "if you can't reverse you shouldn't be driving" camp.

herculepoirot2 · 07/06/2019 13:01

I kind of agree if you can’t park you really shouldn’t be driving.

That doesn’t really follow. If you can’t reverse park and therefore don’t put yourself in a situation where you have to, what’s the issue?

SmellbowSmellbow123 · 07/06/2019 13:01

I passed my test in 2001 and that included reversing around a corner and reversing for a parallel park - is that not that same as reverse parking?

Sleepyblueocean · 07/06/2019 13:01

The Head could suggest it where it is possible for safety reasons but I doubt they would want the hassle of actively policing it. The staff have better things to do.

DramaRamaLlama · 07/06/2019 13:04

Can't reverse park?!!

Holy F! If you cannot reverse park then putting yourself in a position where you have to reverse into a busy school car park is terrifying!! Shock
