To ask school to choose? (parking)

Aibu to ask my DD’s school to choose to alert that they must reverse park. There are no guidelines in the car park and I just feel like it’s mayhem. If we all reversed parked then it may be s bit more streamlined and time saving? Do you think they would find me weird for suggesting it ?😂😬

I can reverse park, but if I don't absolutely have to I wont, because im not very good at it. It wasn't in my test either, neither was parallel parking (which again, I can do but I would rather not!)

nobody will pay any attention OP. Our nursery carpark is mayhem and last time I parked in there someone blocked me in so now I either walk or park on the road!

CripsSandwiches · 07/06/2019 12:21

I'm terrible at reversing and parking but I always reverse park at school (I don't usually drive but when I do I get there early so have plenty of time to do it slowly). If you're so bad at reversing you can't reverse park you definitely shouldn't be reversing into a buys car park filled with kids.

ChrisPrattsFace · 07/06/2019 12:21

I’m confused to those who say it’s a recent addition?
I passed 11 years ago and I had to reverse park in my test?
Also - we’ve just been on holiday and almost every carpark has reverse park only rule!? Isn’t there something about you’re not supposed to reverse into oncoming traffic so you’re SUPPOSED to reverse park? (Not sure if that’s a me thing or a thing thing)

TheInvestigator · 07/06/2019 12:23

I just got my file out from my driving test showing all the ticks and where I was given minors etc. There isn't a "reverse parking" manoeuvre on it. I wasn't tested on that, and I sat my test in 2011. It wasn't part of the test.

AryaStarkWolf · 07/06/2019 12:24

If you're so bad at reversing you can't reverse park you definitely shouldn't be reversing into a buys car park filled with kids.

Exactly.

AryaStarkWolf · 07/06/2019 12:24

it doesn't matter whether reverse parking is on the test or not, reversing is and you should be able to do it

TheInvestigator · 07/06/2019 12:25

The three manoeuvres they tested when I sat my test where either 3 point turn, reverse around a corner or parallel park. And they only tested you on 2 of those; they just didn't tell you in advance so you'd need to be prepared for all of them.

SophyStantonLacy · 07/06/2019 12:26

I passed my test in 2005, and I had to do reverse parking as part of my learning. Cant actually remember if it was one of the manoeuvres I had to do on the actual test though. Surely if you can’t do everything you might have to do while in control of a lethal bit of machinery you shouldn’t be driving it?!

hsegfiugseskufh · 07/06/2019 12:26

the only manoeuvre I was asked to do was an emergency stop and even then I didn't have to do it because I was 39 and a half weeks pregnant and the examiner said he would rather I did not do it. I am pretty sure that he shouldn't have done that but nevertheless he did!

hsegfiugseskufh · 07/06/2019 12:27

oh yeah I did a 3 point turn, too.

FrogOfFrogHall · 07/06/2019 12:27

Missing the point here but your child's school has a car park that parents can park in?! 😮

Seeline · 07/06/2019 12:27

I took my test 34 years ago and didn't have to learn any parking. We did reverse around a corner and 3 point turns. I think it was assumed that if you could do that, you would be able to park!

I actually find reverse parking much easier than forward parking, so usually do, but I need quite a large space to parallel park.

LadyRannaldini · 07/06/2019 12:28

I can't reverse park

Then you shouldn't be driving at all. Those who claim problems because of the size of their vehicle, buy a car you can manage, not a status symbol! Supermarket car parks are littered with badly parked large vehicles.

TheInvestigator · 07/06/2019 12:28

I'm in Scotland... is it different up here?

You weren't allowed on the motorway back then either. But as soon as you pass, you should go and practice.

Reverse parking just makes it much easier. You don't need to edge out until you can see, always worrying you might hit a car driving too fast in the car park! Go practice it if you can't do it!

thenightsky · 07/06/2019 12:28

Its much easier to reverse park in than to reverse out without swinging wide and hitting the car parked beside you! I've had my wheel arches scraped twice in a couple of months by idiots reversing out and just swinging their front end too far Angry

Lllot5 · 07/06/2019 12:29

I wasn’t taught to reverse park or park at all. Reverse round corner and turn in the road, not three point turn, you could take as many turns as you needed.

letsrunfar · 07/06/2019 12:31

I presume we're talking about a school car park here?

Why would reverse parking make any difference to the situation of mayhem?
Given how many drivers you see struggling to reverse, never mind reverse park, surely it would add to the mayhem no?

NotSorry · 07/06/2019 12:34

Reversing into a parking space was only added to the driving test fairly recently really - I never had to do it when I learnt to drive (I can but was never tested on it)

No it wasn't - it's the same as reverse round a corner and we had to do that in 1985 when I took my test

Mumski45 · 07/06/2019 12:37

Presumably there is less mayhem because the reverse parking is done before the kids come out of school and fill up the car park with pedestrians. It's far less risky to manoeuvre round people if your going forwards and can see them clearly.
I agree with your idea OP but sadly I think most people who forward park will ignore it.

And as for not being able to reverse park - well go practice somewhere quiet until you can as it's far safer.

Reastie · 07/06/2019 12:38

Yabu to tell them they must reverse park. You wnbu to ask if parents can be requested to reverse park. Ime most people will ignore it anyway.

Lllot5 · 07/06/2019 12:38

I definitely was not tested on any sort of parking. Think I passed in 1998 can’t remember exactly.

nickymanchester · 07/06/2019 12:38

For those disagreeing about the reverse parking bit I believe that in the test it's an either/or thing.

So you either get a parallel parking or a reverse parking but not both.

Although, when I took my test back in the early 1980s it was definitely only the parallel parking and no one did reverse parking in the test.

Carpark1 · 07/06/2019 12:40

@JoanMavisIcecreamGirl can’t walk unfortunately and can’t park on road, it’s a country road, it would make no sense.

@FrogOfFrogHall yes 😂 it’s a rural school

OP posts:
DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/06/2019 12:43

I passed my test in 1994 and I had to parallel park. Reverse parking is so useful. I always reverse park, makes for a quick getaway.

Sleepyblueocean · 07/06/2019 12:43

Ds's large sn buggy is in the boot and we need a large space behind to open the boot and get it out so sometimes reverse parking isn't practical.
