Awful feedback in appraisal

ele1000 · 06/06/2019 21:03

Namechanged as identifying.

Today I had my yearly appraisal and as part of it had 360 feedback from my colleagues.

There is a colleague I work alongside, closely, on the same projects but in different teams (think project manager and engineer type scenario). I am the specialist in this case. I have posted before about this man but basically he makes my life hell. He is aggressive, rude, stubborn and thinks he knows more than me desire a degree in my specialism. He refuses to negotiate on any task and any job I do for him is met with constant criticism.

My line managers met with me to discuss the feedback and basically said I had failed to meet my objectives, based mainly on feedback from the colleague. I asked to see the feedback and was told I couldn't. Further questioning revealed this was because it was a three page critique on me, where he has criticised my character, work, ability to meet deadlines, management style etc etc. It is not constructive and more of a character assassination.

I was obviously very upset after this and my managers gave me a hard time. I was told there was nothing positive.

Today I found this wasn't true at all and all other colleagues had given me very positive feedback. In the whole time I've worked in the business and not with this man I've received positive feedback.

So how do I move forward? I feel in an impossible situation where if I continue to work with this man I will never move up. I come home from work crying every day and not sure I can carry on.

I agree apply to see your file and records - they have to provide this

Then write and email to manager

Further to my apparasied on x date, where to you stated x y and z and advised there was no positive feedback from colleges and I’ve failed to reach x y and z targets.

I would like a copy in writing stating where I failed to reach these targets and how the company propose to deal with this

I have requested a copy of my peer review and look forward to your advice

Get it in writing

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/06/2019 21:39

X post, forget everything I've said, look for another job, start a paper trail and go for constructive dismissal. Because that is ridiculous. What does this bully have on your managers that they can ignore this kind of behaviour?

thegreatcrestednewt · 06/06/2019 21:40

Your manager sounds absolutely shit. They told you you had no positive feedback, when you did? Wtf? They should have shown you positive feedback.

360 feedback is not meant to be character assassination but constructive! Can’t believe your manager is taking this guy’s side.

Go to HR. If not, i’d Seriously look into finding another job. No job is worth your sanity or MH.

MissyPG · 06/06/2019 21:41

I’d speak to HR and raise these concerns.

You should be able to see the feedback, all of it. I’d note to HR that you have been told by X who collated the feedback that there was positive feedback from others. I’d also raise the victim comment and point out you do genuinely feel victimised.

If they can’t give you all the feedback including any positive feedback (even if anonymised), and if they don’t fully address concerns, I’d raise a formal grievance.

I worked in HR a long time and I wouldn’t say raise a grievance lightly, but there is more to this than what’s been said.

Oakmaiden · 06/06/2019 21:42

How big is the company? I?s there an HR dept? And do you have evidence you sent the examples to your line manager?

bordellosboheme · 06/06/2019 21:42

File a GDPR request to get all 360 data about you. That will put them in the shit. They have used 360 totally against purpose. Seriously dodgy and enabling this colleagues bullying. Are you in a union?

TurboTeddy · 06/06/2019 21:42

Whoa 'I like to play the victim card'.

That sounds really fucking personal and very unprofessional. I think someone up thread suggested looking for another job and filing for constructive dismissal, they have a point.
If you can, put your upset to one side for now and get documenting and find out what your rights are to see the feedback. As another PP said you shouldn't be ambushed with this at the end of the year it's very bad management. Take the PP from HR up on her offer and PM her for advice. They have been utter bastardy to you. Good luck.

thegreatcrestednewt · 06/06/2019 21:42

After reading your update, I see your manager is even more shit and weak and spineless. Your bully must know where the bodies are buried.

TurboTeddy · 06/06/2019 21:43

bsstards although bastardy could described the behaviour!

ele1000 · 06/06/2019 21:43

It's a huge company, we are in a satellite office but still have 100+ employees so no direct HR. I can access HR but they won't know the colleagues personally.

OP posts:
NurseButtercup · 06/06/2019 21:43

I was in tears during the appraisal. The senior manager accompanying my line manager said 'I like to play the victim card'. But that is because I genuinely feel victimised by this colleague.

I'm appalled that this has happened to you and your direct line manager is showing zero support. Somebody upthread said they work in HR please email them for advice and support but you must definitely put in a grievance. Big hugs and Good luck Flowers

TurboTeddy · 06/06/2019 21:43

lol epic fail, I give up.

justasking111 · 06/06/2019 21:45

He poured a drink over you deliberately??

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/06/2019 21:47

It's better that HR don't know the people concerned tbh, because there's clearly some sort of untoward relationship going on that your managers are accepting this feedback on face value. I believe it's what used to be called the old boys' club?

ele1000 · 06/06/2019 21:48

Yeah he poured a drink on me, although another colleague saw him and told him to cut it out. My line manager says she 'does not care what goes on outside of Work' when I pointed out this guy seems to have a genuine dislike for me.

OP posts:
TurboTeddy · 06/06/2019 21:48

They don't need to know the colleagues personally, in fact it probably works better if they don't but they will have a process to follow to investigate a grievance. Your colleague and your manager will not come out of it looking good. Even if you were awful (I doubt you are)
at your job they have behaved in an unacceptably bullying and unprofessional way.

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 06/06/2019 21:48

I suppose you are not in a Union as you would have mentioned it? That's a shame as I would love a problem like this to deal with! If not then you need to make an appointment to speak to someone in HR. It appears that two things are necessary here - if you are in a Union then the rep can request the 360 feedback. If not, you may have to do a Subject Access Request to get it.
Then you look at each point raised and answer it, together with the examples you have given, and do it in the form of a Formal Grievance. If you have raised issues with your Line Managers before and they have not been resolved, then they cannot deal with your grievance. In fact, part of the grievance will be against them for failing to deal with it.
It's the usual to shout 'Constructive Dismissal' but that is VERY difficult to win. In any event, you have to have had something happen that fundamentally changed the relationship with your employer (for example if you had received that feedback, not been allowed to see it (incorrect) and then gone home upset unable to come back. Con.Dis. does not apply if you come back to work and carry on.
Put a grievance in. Don't let the git win. How long has he been there and how long have you been there?

HidingFromDD · 06/06/2019 21:49

Second raising a subject access request for all information relating to your 360 feedback. They have to respond within 30 days. Then go. The grievance route as you'll need to show that you follow procedure if it gets to a grievance.

JonSlow · 06/06/2019 21:50

I would be raising a grievance against your line manager in the first instance. You have documented many concerns of bullying by this colleague, and your LM has done nothing about it.

The appraisal is another tool the bully has used, and the LM has facilitated.

ele1000 · 06/06/2019 21:52

I'm not in a union no. I've been there only a year and up until I started working with this guy around 6 months ago I was enjoying it and receiving great praise and doing well.

I accept that I do not always deal with this colleague the best way eg he puts me under so much stress I have cried a few times and I have been defensive sometimes when he has been completely unreasonable.

But the stress of the situation was making me ill and now this is 10x worse. I feel no one is on my side.

OP posts:
Preggosaurus9 · 06/06/2019 21:52

Sounds toxic. Can you write up your cv and start applying for jobs? Management sound complicit in what amounts to bullying and harassment. You would be best off out of there totally.

ele1000 · 06/06/2019 21:53

I should say that said colleague doesn't act in this way to my managers as he sees them as 'above him'. Therefore they don't seem to understand why I can't just negotiate with him.

OP posts:
foreverhanging · 06/06/2019 21:55

Jesus what the fuck is wrong with this man?!

And what sort of manager says 'you like to play the victim card'

What a farce. Honestly op, I would raise a grievance and I would be looking for another job. Fuck these guys.

NurseButtercup · 06/06/2019 21:55

utter bastardy
Your mis-spelling describes these work colleagues perfectly!!

TurboTeddy · 06/06/2019 21:59

Something to think about, your appraisal was today.
